Sania Mirza
Quentin Hull(Interviewer)

Ladies and gentlemen, she’s a superstar in her own country. Put your hands together for Sania Mirza. How did you feel out there?

(Mirza) I felt great. I think I was hitting the ball pretty well. I was striking it well. I played her about a year and a half ago and she has got a lot better. I felt good for a first match and it was good to come out here. I knew that it was going to be tough. I hit the right shots at the right time.

What type of preparation have you put in for this Australian summer?

(Mirza) We had the Asian Games at the end of this year. Our training was cut a bit short so we only had about three or four weeks before coming here. I had a lot of matches in Doha where I have played the last 10 days. I finally got a week after that to rest and then a week of training. I’m hitting the ball well. I think I’ve had a pretty decent four or five months. My confidence levels are pretty high. This tournament is just going to help me get better for the Australian Open.

We know India won their way here through the Asian Hopman Cup. What does it mean for tennis in India, to be here at the Hopman Cup in Perth?

(Mirza) Obviously it is a great honour firstly to represent my country. We actually earned it and weren’t just in the main draw, so obviously we want it very badly and we are going to give whatever we have and give 100 percent. As far as the country is concerned, of course they are very excited that we could make it. We are playing with the best players in the world and we have great competition here. We are obviously the underdogs so I think that helps.

How’s Rohan going to go? He’s got to a pretty tough match here against Tomas Berdych.

(Mirza) Well, we are 1-0 up. Like I said we are underdogs and honestly people don’t know how Rohan plays so I think that he’s a surprise package and I think he’s going to do whatever he has to. If it comes to the mixed doubles I think we have a great chance.

Well you certainly gave India a terrific start. Congratulations. Ladies and gentlemen, Sania Mirza.

Looking at her game, there is no improvement. same old unforced errors. So, I would be shocked if she has a consistently good year, let alone big year.

Sania is one hell of a over rated player, her game has been sorted out by all the players that matter therefore her victories over unknowns now have to be hailed as greatest ever...

What do you mean unknowns? Last three weeks she has constantly beat players ranked higher than her, which has included top-20, as well as top-40 players. What do you expect from her? To be #1? That's a bit tough in tennis. Being around top-20 should be her goal and she seems to be progressing towards that nicely.

Just calling top-40 tennis players unknown simply means you don't follow tennis!

Anyway, just be glad India is now actually able to compete in Hopman's Cup.

I definitely think she will be a top 50 player for at least the next 3-4 years. But she cannot be a top 20 player unless she improves her game beyond just hard hitting and reduces her unforced and silly errors.

India beat Croatia for second straight win

India enhanced their chances of making it to the title round in their maiden outing at the Hopman Cup mixed team tennis competition, getting the better of Croatia 2-1 in a Group 'B' tie in Perth on Wednesday.

Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna won the decisive mixed doubles match against the Croatian pair of Mario Ancic and his younger sister Sanja 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (10/8) in 79 minutes at the Burswood Dome.

Sania, ranked 65th in the world, attributed the victory to her ability to handle crowd pressure.

"I've played in front of big crowds before, and I think that helped me," she said.

India next meets Spain, who are represented by world No 7 Tommy Robredo and Anabel Medina Garrigues.

Earlier in the day, Sania registered a comfortable 6-2, 6-3 victory over Sanja Ancic to give India the lead.

However, Mario, ranked ninth in the world, brought things on level terms by beating Bopanna in straight sets, 7-6(2) 7-6(3).

India had beaten third seeds the Czech Republic 2-1 in their opening match on Sunday

On a related note, I wonder what Sania's record against Mauresmo is.

Man, 2 tie-breakers against a top 10 player!!!

Bopanna can be so good, if only someone would sponsor him and get him a coach. His serve is good enough to win every single game. Just need to work on baseline shots.
