I started Noddy at the same age I was reading 500 page stories in Bengali so I may have read one maybe. Quickly graduated to Enid Blytons and soon to Hardy Boys while at the same time reading literary texts in Bengali :)

The irony is that I always went to English medium schools!!!

Two things -- Enid Blyton is considered politically incorrect -- e.g. gollywogs etc. Also there is an online discount book store that sells the whole set of Hardy Boys etc. www.bookcloseouts.com

Maan, mock is the wizard(ess)! She knows all answers! She is the 'one' in Matrix!

But somehow only thing she does not know are match results? Keeps saying india will surely win!
Mock - please tell us what is gonna happen to Test 4?  :)

i do not know all the answers. i only ask about things i know of  ;-)

of course, a thumping indian win - mark my words, fineleg.

As usual (like we did during the 1-4 'thumping' ), I have marked and highlighted above said words :)

Mock,
Above marked words acknowledged. Applause.
(not sure ramdin scaring us(or me), if it was 'thumping', but i feel very happy that we won).

I have not read Bahadur either. Actually reading comics was not allowed in my house so we had to read whatever we could at school (borrowed from friends) :)

Remembered another thing -- a friend of mine was very good at sketching character from comics. In the fourth grade he filled entire notebooks (in class) with drawings of Diana in bikinis. Ahh, the memories  ;D The man went to IIM after IIT and is earning obscene amounts in Bangalore these days!

-P

 ;D

i was allowed comics though my mother did frown upon the archie comics, for obvious reasons :-)

well ... i've read archie comics myself ... can understand why my mom would have frowned ... your mom, i'm not sure i understand .... ???

well, you know, the emphasis on dating and "boys" and "hearts" at high school ;-) though i must admit i found the romance of Scarlett O'Hara, Jane Eyre and heroines of Jane Austen far more fascinating and influential but those were "classics" and of course, i got a pat on my back for reading them..little did my mother know!  :D

LOL .. sometimes its better if you have parents who are not into reading ...

Boy, this thread has gone someplace else over the last few days ... you guys take trivia to a whole new level ...

nah - my mom is very well-read but did not think that classics may influence people in more ways than just improving the language :-)

after-all, the sillybilly dating stuff in archie comics is nothing compared to the the scandals in the classics!

I guess you are lucky ... my mom was also heavily into reading ... and whenever I used to raid my elder cousin's stack of books to read, they used to be filtered out by her ... for inappropriate books

of course, only went to stoke my curiosity ;)

Meant to reply to this earlier but it escaped my mind. I recently got introduced to these and have been devouring them. There are two series of books - one is the "No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency" series and the other is "Sunday Philosophy Club" series. The former is set in Botswana and the main character is Precious Ramotswe, a 40+ woman who runs a detective agency. The latter, set in Edinburgh, has Isabel Dalhousie, another woman who is an editor of a philosophy journal but is in general curious about life and gets immersed in some mystery or the other. These books are not the typical "whodunits" where dead bodies fall out of closets and blood stains are seen on the carpet and so on. They are set at a very slow pace, with a lot of introspection and observations on life and what a "proper" way of living should be etc. The former contains a lot of tidbits about life in Botswana, the hardships involved and the general role of women, etc. The latter is a bit more urbane, the protagonist being a much more 'sophisticated' lady.

I like them and the only problem I have is that each successive book has a lot of details that are already explained in the earlier ones and for some one who is going through the series in order, it does come across rather redundant and a bit irksome. But the author did not intend them to be a series originally and I guess, he had to fill in the details for those reading the books individually.

In Mandrake comics, there was a "Miss Universe" contest conducted ( literally Most beautiful in the Universe ). What were the 1st and 2nd place winners to get ?? (ie what the prizes were )

PS: Mock, i finally got around to readign this thread. You are a genius!!

Narda won it, Magnon's wife was the runner up . First place was along the lines of "anything you want" and Narda chose to go back to earth . Think second place was along the lines of "go anywhere you want" or something, dont remember.

P.s It was a Miss Galaxy, not miss universe : :P

Phantom and Mandrake dailies and info at:
http://www.deepwoods.org/ref.html

Also, at:

http://deepwoods.orgfree.com/strip.htm

Read Phantom strip comics  by date above

Update: only few comics are available - i think the author has edited it so that not all strips are now available.
