I've rented many books from the library. But - as far as buying "my own" - My parents for the first time (probably I was in grade 4 or grade 5 then) gave me some "discretionary money" that I can use to go and buy something. The very first book that I went and bought at a booksale in my school using part of that money was White Fang. (I dont remember now if it was an adaptation to suit junior reading or whether it was the 100% classic original - it may have been the original, not sure)

Did not know that the DG had another James Herriot fan, I had accidentally stumbled upon his books when I was in class XII and became a instant fan...really beautiful narrative with an ability to transport you to his times beautifully...

If any of you are mystery/thriller fans, I recommend Harlan Coben. His Myron Bolitar series is excellent. In addition one of his standalone novels "Tell No One" has been adapted into a French movie (has won several awards) by Guillaume Canet.

after rk narayan my search for the simple author who gives you all the depth and layers in his simplicity has come to an end

also recent reads which i found pacy normally somthing i do not find in travel books - riding the iron rooster - paul theroux

and life of pi was brilliant

yay! another McCall Smith fan! i have posted about him somewhere in this labyrinth. let me see if i can find that. i simply love the slow-paced, matter-of-fact style of his books.
