2011 World Cup Squad
« on: April 20, 2006, 10:03:03 PM »
I was thinking about it and realized that our 2011 WC squad has the potential of looking eerily similar to the current ODI squad heading to the WI.  When we take a look at the ages of the players, only Rahul Dravid is likely to retire between now and then.  Ajit Agarkar may or may not still be around at age 33 in 2011, but the odds are that the rest of the team will all be in the reckoning, which bodes rather well for the ODI future.  A potential ODI lineup in 2011 could look something like:

RU, VS, VR/MK, YS, SR, MSD, IKP, RP, AA/RPS, HS, SS -- pretty similar to something you may see tomorrow if Dravid were injured or rested

Of course, we hope some great new ones make irrepressible cases between now and then

I doubt it. Most of the guys are not stabilished. They are not like RD, SRT and SG of 1999 WC. Also if you look at the past you will find that our fast bowling department is very volatile and chances are that bunch of these medium fast bowlers may not be able to hold on to their place.
In batting you may see couple of guys like Rohit Sharma and Jhujhunwala coming in.
And in bowling Piyush will prolly be playing as an allrounder, Bhajji and Powar gonna be much older and slow.

I am sure the 2001 sqaud won't have quite a few of these names. The cry for blooding youth will come in over and over again and the picture will change.

One of the reasons why people like SRT, RD, AK and other such players are great is the SUSTAINING power...they played well and lost form/found form, played well again, over a sustained period of many years, decade even more! Thats why they are all HALL-of-FAME players.

It is very difficult to predict how many will "sustain" for the next 5 year timeframe among those listed here.
Some like VS and RP are not "that" young, but they may be there ONLY if sustaining power is there.

The other young ones, are theoretically feasible, but cannot say at all, who is gonna be there. None of them have shown a clear and strong signal to be sustaining for a LONG time (YS a little, but still not consistent yet)

So, while this is a academically interesting list, not much. For fun, ofcourse, we can discuss this.

One thing - if ANY (other than VS and RP) of the youngsters below SUSTAIN for 5 more years, good possibility they will sustain for another 3-4 years! (tougher for fast bowlers, batsmen atleast).

RU, VS, VR/MK, YS, SR, MSD, IKP, RP, AA/RPS, HS, SS

I doubt if RU will be around for so long. somehow, I didn't other openers might oust him. Also, questions of will Viru be around for that long (I hope so). Also, RP will be around that long (33 yrs). Will he around in 2011. I doubt that too. No guarantee that RPS/SS will not fall by the wayside just like ZK/AN (impressive prior to and during WC03). You already cited that AA may not be around.

So, out of the squad of 15 for the WI ODIs, IMO, the following will still be around :

Rao, Kaif, Yuvi, Raina, MSD, IP, HS

The cry for blooding youth will come only if the youth experiment succeeds. This is a little premature for that.

obviously, even Sahir realises not all he listed there will be around. but the observation is good in that we can say a good nucleus of them may be around which is all you want, so you can avoid painful dips and transitions.

For all those that essentially made the argument that new players could be drafted in between now and then, I hope and expect so.  The point of my thread was not that the team WILL be this similar in 2011, but rather that almost all the current players will still be available then.  Therefore, I think we can be rather confident of the standard of talent and ability that will be on display even then.  Of course, you never know what new very good player may arise between now and then.  Already mentioned, Piyush Chawla and Rohit Sharma would be favorable bets.  Yes, it is always possible that a player may fade due to severe loss of form, injuries, etc., but I do think many of the current players have displayed a fair bit of talent and dedication required to avoid some of those problems.  However, if there are more fast bowlers, more spinners, and more batsmen coming into the side, great!  That will only mean an increased depth in Indian cricket.

Exactly-- even in a worst case scenario, you would still expect most of the current players to still be available and would not be too much of a stretch to expect many of them to be more experienced and hopefully better cricketers by then, as compared to today.

thats my one big hope... thats some of today's young'uns actually mature and imrprove as cricketers. I'm particularly interested in the fast bowlers.
