Gilchrist, Rohit star in Chargers’ win

Cape Town: Deccan Chargers, powered by Adam Gilchrist (71) and Rohit Sharma (52), defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by 24 runs, in the IPL match at Newlands, Cape Town, on Wednesday.

Chasing the Chargers’ total of 184 for six, Bangalore’s middle-order survived a disastrous start to take the side to 160 for eight.

Bangalore’s start was disastrous when Fidel Edwards’ brilliant in-swinging yorker bowled a clueless Ryder in the first ball. One by one, the batsmen perished to their own shot-making. Jacques Kallis spanked a shot straight to Rohit at covers off R.P. Singh. Robin Uthappa, who’d been striking the ball hard, succumbed to a brilliant effort from Teja at deep mid-wicket off Scott Styris.

In a commendable effort, left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha flighted it beautifully to skipper Pietersen who tried playing across. He missed completely, for Adam Gilchrist to play his part behind the stumps.

Rahul Dravid held fort confidently before departing for a 27-ball 48; an innings that included a six over square-leg off Harmeet Singh that fetched him the orange cap. Virat Kohli top-scored with an efficient 50. He picked the gaps consistently, something his teammates couldn’t achieve. Edwards and Harmeet Singh weren’t controlled enough and made sure Kohli managed seven boundaries in his 32-ball 50. — PTI
