should Kasab get a second chance?

New Delhi: The Shiv Sena has indirectly criticised the wife and daughter of slain Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) chief Hemant Karkare for being too soft on Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone 26/11 terrorist languishing the custody of Mumbai Police.

In a veiled criticism, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray has said that the country does not share Karkare’s family’s stance that Kasab should be let off on "humanitarian grounds". The radical Hindu party wants Kasab to be hanged.

"The Karkare family may have a different opinion. But that is not the opinion of family members of the other policemen killed in the terror attacks," Thackeray said in an editorial comment in Sena mouthpiece Saamana

The article exalts Vaishali, the daughter of another slain cop, Tukaram Ombale, who has called for a harsh punishment for Kasab.

"The daughter of Tukaram Ombale, who fell to Mohammed Ajmal Amir Iman's bullets but ensured that the terrorist was captured alive, has said that the souls of the 16 policemen killed in the terror attacks will get peace only if he is hanged," Thackeray said.

Many are reading the article as an indirect attack on Kavita Karkare, who told CNN-IBN last week that her daughter wanted 21-yr-old Kasab to get a second chance.

“When asked about giving Kasab a harsh punishment, my daughter Sayli said, “Kasab is only 21 years old. We must change his ideology. Everyone laughed at her, but as a mother I feel proud that being Hemant Karkare's daughter she still said that. Then why can’t we together change ideologies towards terrorism?” Kavita told CNN-IBN.

Referring to the slew of media interviews of Kavita Karkare, the slain ATS chief's wife, Thackeray said she has quoted her daughter who is studying in London and who feels that Ajmal should be given another chance to live and realise what a grave crime he has committed.

"Karkare's daughter should meet Ombale's daughter. We also respect Karkare's martyrdom and we are expressing our opinion while respecting Karkare's sacrifice," Thackeray said in the article.

Earlier, Shiv Sena had openly criticised Hemant Karkare for the ATS probe into the Malegaon probe.

Muslim forum backs Sena, says hang Kasab without trial

Panaji: The All India Milli Council on Wednesday demanded that trial Ajmal Kasab, the sole terrorist arrested in the Mumbai terror attacks, be hanged without trial.

The AIMC, a representative platform of Muslims living in India, claimed that Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray was spot-on in his editorial in Wednesday's edition of the ‘Saamna’, a mouthpiece of his party, which seeks a hanging for Kasab without trial.

Iqbal Mohideen, president of the All India Mili Council (Goa), told reporters that Ajmal Kasab's chilling crime should be judged through the Shariah (Islamic law).

"The AIMC supports Bal Thackeray's demand. Even the Shariah says an eye for an eye, a limb for a limb and life for life," Mohideen said.

Condemning the Goa police for storming a madrassa in Vasco Tuesday and the handling of the 60-odd minor female students studying there, Mohideen accused the police of terrorising the minority community.

"Show me one instance where Muslim women have participated in a terror act? And here the police were accusing the management of the all-girl madrassa of breeding terrorists," he charged.

"We are Indians first and Muslims next. Why are we forced to make a public display of our patriotism time and again?" he asked.

"The AIMC has already made it public that none of these terrorists should be buried in our burial grounds, because they have slaughtered innocents," Mohideen said.

The AIMC and the Association of All Goa Muslim Jamaats at a joint press conference, while demanding the immediate suspension of the Deputy Superintendent of Police Deu Benaulikar and Inspector Harish Madkaikar, sought a judicial enquiry into the raid on the all-female madrasssa.
