We will claw our way into the game: Gilchrist

PERTH, JAN 17 (PTI)

Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist said Indian bowlers today went about their job "cleverly" but insisted his team could still claw back in the match with three days to spare in the third cricket Test here.

"They dominated. They used the wind really well, and they were very clever in how they went about (bowling) in partnerships," said Gilchrist in the end of the day press conference.

"There is a long way to go in the game... We will claw our way into the game," he said.

Gilchrist said the hosts have set their priority on wrapping up the Indian innings as soon as possible.

"Presently India has done a better job. They applied themselves better in batting and maintained the pressure with the ball. (Now) Getting the nine wickets is our priority."

The Australian vice-captain admitted the hosts had thrown away the initiative by falling prey to the Indian bowlers.

"We didn't play well... And handed it back to them. We nicked everything. They bowled enough balls in the right area and didn't play the right shots," he said.

Gilchrist praised RP Singh, who picked 4-68 on the second day, for his performance.

"There was a little momentum going my way but RP produced the beauty and I nicked it," he said.

Plan was to bowl in set areas: RP Singh
Press Trust Of India

Perth: Indian bowlers were more successful than their Australian counterparts on the WACA track because they bowled in "set areas", according to paceman Rudra Pratap Singh who said he only concentrated in maintaining a good length.

"I maintained a proper length and bowled in the set areas as planned before the match," said RP Singh, who took 4-68 to put India in the driver's seat in the third cricket Test.

Fast bowlers Irfan Pathan and Ishant Sharma also picked two wickets each.

RP Singh said the wicket still had a lot for batsmen and it would be a challenge to bowl in the fourth innings.

"The wicket is quick as I had heard about it and has a good bounce. It still has life and it will be better to bat tomorrow as well. We will aim for 450 target as it could be difficult to bat on fourth day," he said, adding, "we will have to see if the match will last till the fifth day".

The Uttar Pradesh bowler said he did not mind getting hit for boundaries as he was also bowling bouncers on the advise of the team think-tank.

"I got hit for fours but I also bowled bouncers as I was asked to do so," he said.

Asked to compare the WACA track with the wickets in England, R P Singh said, "The difference lies in the ball but the bounce is similar".

Australia wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist also praised RP Singh for his performance.

"There was a little momentum going my way but RP produced the beauty and I nicked it," he said.

Gilchrist said the hosts have set their priority on wrapping up the Indian innings as soon as possible.

"Presently India has done a better job. They applied themselves better in batting and maintained the pressure with the ball. Getting the nine wickets is our priority."

Oh Gilli, you're a nice bloke, but may you grovel while you claw. After all, Aussies are hard as nails, now let us see how tough them nails are.
