Do they still have Spencer's Lemon-lime in India? My favorite soft drink by a mile, with "Paneer 'Goli' Soda" and Kickapoo as runners up. Never had the chutzpah to try out Kali Mark and Bovonto  ;D

One would be the color? Yellow and green? What else?

Citrus aurantifolia (Lime)

Originates from tropical Southeast Asia, where it can still be found wild. Cultivars have been developed based on sweetness (usually sour), size, shape (round or oblong) and colour (yellow or green). All varieties have relatively thin skins. Lime fruit are used for preserves, garnishes and juices. Citral oil is extracted for use in perfumes.

Citrus limon (Lemon)

Hybrid between Citron Citrus medica and Lime Citrus aurantifolia.
The place and date of origin of the Lemon is uncertain but it probably came from China. Lemon is used for making lemonade, it is used in drinks, and for flavouring a wide variety of foods. The essential oil from Lemon is known as cedro oil, and is used as a flavouring in the food industry and is also used in soaps, detergents and perfumes.

Nah, I did not want the "google" tips here...I wanted more practical tips such as that given by sgusa above (Prfsr's post (thanks Prfsr) while it is on the topic is a bit too generic) - the rest ofcourse the banter.

Lets see if the cooks can stir the pot a bit more on the differences!

No, Not right now atleast...But the topic piqued my interest since some folks use the green ones. I've done it before with the yellow one.

My fav meal:

1) Puliyogarai (with potato crisps & thick yogurt), followed by
2) Lemon rice, Coconut rice ( half portions each) ( with potato crisps, spicy pickles (mango AND lime :) ), more yogurt)
3) Finish with mixed yogurt rice ( Thachi mumum taken up a few notches :) ) with chopped green grapes, nuts etc etc etc etc etc

Oh, and all this followed by either hot cocunt payasam or cold icecream

Oh, the potato crisps must be augmented by lots of diff vadams too. + More Mulaga for the yogurt rice.

All this needs to be eaten over the space of 2 hrs or so, on a warm evening, on the terrace, with the tiles still hot from the day's sunlight. With lots of people partaking of the meal.

Then just lie on your back, gaze at the stars and have a mini sleep session before dragging your sleepy ass downstairs into your beds.

This just cant be beat!

UPDATE: How could I forget to mention Thengai (cocunut) and Ingi (ginger) thogayal ? (sort of chutney with pulses)

i like it all right - hence i don't make it :)

i was reading a book on south indian festivals and 'aaDi perukku' (18th day of the month aaDi) is one such. traditionally, people used to go on a picnic to the banks of river kaveri with various kaLandha saadam(mixed rice) to thank the river (of course, the water is replenished after the monsoon in the west by this time). lemon rice, coconut rice etc. are made on that day and eaten with crunchy, munchy vaDaam.

of course, in chennai, people go to the beach intead! heh.

Personally I have no preferences though for certain things Lime is better, for example Lime Juice (fresh) versus Lemon Juice (fresh). Zest of Lemon is probably better (as a taste enhancer) than Lime zest. There are certain things one usually does mainly with Lemon, for example Lemon Tart. One can make pickles with Lemon, but I prefer Lime Pickles.

If you see following table of values - which I usually do not care - both look quite similar:

What is worth a “portion” of lemon and lime?

Volume/weight   Lemon without peel, 5,4 cm diameter /58 G         Lime, 1 average (5 cm diameter) /67 G

Calories                                                               17                   20
Proteins                                                               0,6 G      0,5 G
Glucids                                                               5,4 G      7,1 G
Lipids                                                               0,2 G      0,1 G
Food fibres                                                  1,6 G      1,9 G

For "lemon rice" - even though it is called "lemon rice" some folks recommend lime!

There are taste issues/preferences (e.g. lemon is less "fragrant" according to some).
There is a more impotrant issue in North America -- if you need a lot of juice (by tablespoons or even cups) go with lemons. If you want to dress up coke/cocktail/desserts, probably lime is the way to go. If you are making paneer, go with lemon unless you really like the fragrance of lime in your paneer.

By the way lemon and more so lime are not all the same. In Bengal you get many types of lime (all of which we always called lemon :) ) and my mother has thumbrules for what goes where. In the US, if you have ever had a key lime pie, you know that it smells just like desi "lemons". However, key limes hardly have any juice!!

I hope I have muddled things enough!!

i used to get it from ambika appalams. this time around, i got it from a "saradha stores" on Arya Gowda road. it was recommended by my bro and SIL. i also got some "maaGani pickle" from them. it was in a plastic sachet and i kept it in my back-pack at home, only to discover the next morning that the oil had oozed out all over the place. GRRRR! i washed, sopaed, dried my backpack about 5 times and still the smell remained.

oh, it wasn't even tasty and i left it behind eventually. a good maagani pickcle should have a lot of lime(limon?) squeezed into it and this one only had chilli powder!

btw, i also got some mysterious powders from there - "eingaaya" powder, "poondu" powder(LOL) and such.
