Pakistan Cricket Board sacks eighty employees

KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has retrenched 80 employees from its current setup as it undertakes a major re-organisation of its management structure.

The affected employees belong to various categories including contractual, permanent and daily waged at all management levels and have been awarded severance pay as a result. Redundancy of certain individuals in the existing setup, whose qualifications and skill-sets did not match requirements, is what led to their being shown the door.

The decision for re-organisation was taken by the new management of PCB in October 2006 and was assigned to Ferguson Associates on November 1, 2006. Ferguson Associates completed an HR and management audit which was then presented to, and approved by, the Ad Hoc Committee.

In light of the recommendations, the Committee will now formulate and implement Employers’ Service Rules 2007 as well as putting in place the new management structure. Rationalising certain positions at various management levels to meet the requirements of the Board was also recommended.

The task was undertaken to “restructure the Board on corporate lines” while ensuring good governance. Ferguson Associates conducted the audit through a job-by-job analysis while comparing PCB’s existing structure with the Australian and South African boards.

Strong’ Talat to have dual role with Pakistan team in Abu Dhabi

 By Muhammad Ali

LAHORE: Former Pakistan opening Test batsman Talat Ali Malik will manage the Pakistan cricket team during their one-day international series against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), it was learnt here Monday. Talat was appointed manager of the Pakistan team last year in September after former Test batsman Zaheer Abbas was relieved of his assignment following the Oval fiasco in England. Talat managed skipper Inzamamul Haq and his men during the ICC Champions Trophy in India, West Indies tour to Pakistan, Pakistan tour to South Africa and the World Cup in the West Indies.

According to sources, Talat will be the manager-cum-coach of the squad in United Arab Emirates. “Talat is a great success since his association with the team. That is why it has been decided that Talat, who is a strong person, will perform the dual role of the coach and manager,” sources added. Talat, who played ten Tests for Pakistan between 1972 and 1979, has also served the International Cricket Council (ICC) as a match referee between 1997 and 2001. He also supervised 2001 Ashes series between traditional rivals Australia and England. Talat was offered by the ICC to join the Elite Panel in 2003 which he declined due to personal reasons. “Since his association with the team, Pakistan have prevailed in eight ICC hearings out of nine. This shows that he is capable of handling the team and other pressures during the away tours.” Sources said the Pakistan team needed a strong personality with good managerial skills to handle the players and keep strict discipline. “The decision in this regard will be taken by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) ad hoc committee shortly,” sources said.
