AHMEDABAD, April 16: Sachin Tendulkar returned to the cricket field with a cracking 68 but that wasn't enough for Mumbai to get past a determined Tamil Nadu in their opening Group B match of the national Twenty20 tournament at the Motera Stadium on Monday night. Mumbai lost the match by 15 runs after asked to chase 173 for victory.

There was excitement in the air with the star-studded Ranji champions Mumbai playing their first game and Tendulkar provided the spark as he took advantage of a dropped catch when he was 27.

It was superb batting under lights as Tendulkar cut loose with poise and authority, and struck ten boundaries and two flat sixes. Not just that, his running between the wickets was swift as well.

As long as Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma were at the crease, the side seemed to be cruising. But once Sharma fell for 25 and Tendulkar was castled trying to sweep medium-pacer P Amarnath(gali gali mein shor hai... SRT sabse bada choker hai), Mumbai lost their way.

Earlier put into bat, Tamil Nadu's charge was led by a flamboyant yet sensible knock by opener S Anirudh. Son of the former India captain K Srikkanth, the youngster made 49 (39b, 6x4).

Underdogs Tamil Nadu defeated much-fancied Mumbai by 15 runs in a crucial Group B match, in the inter-state Twenty20 tournament, at the Sardar Paterl Gujarat stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad, under floodlights on Monday night.

So long as Sachin Tendulkar was at the wicket, Mumbai looked heading for a thumping victory. But the moment Tamil Nadu got rid of the maestro, Mumbai presented a classic case of how to lose from a winning position.

The star-studded Mumbai team, boasting of Team India members Tendulkar, Zaheer Khan, Ajit Agarkar, Wasim Jaffer and Ramesh Powar, among others, had to score 173 runs to win the match.

Mumbai captain Amol Muzumdar gambled and sent in Powar along with Tendulkar to open the innings. But the move backfired as Powar fell to medium-pacer P Amarnath for just 5. Jaffer also did not last long as he was consumed by fast bowler V Yomahesh when his individual score was 4.

Mumbai were 21 for 2 when the young and exuberant Rohit Sharma stepped in to accompany Tendulkar, who was already going guns.

Tendulkar and Sharma tore into the Tamil Nadu attack and put on 78 runs for the third wicket in a matter of minutes. He was enjoying every moment of his stay in the middle and hitting all the bowlers round the wicket almost at will. Even the departure of Sharma, who was bowled by R Prasanna for 25 (26 balls, 1x4, 1x6), did not make any difference to Tendulkar's mood.

But for a reprieve by Hemang Badani at short extra-cover off the bowling of Yomahesh when on 27, the Master Blaster played an explosive innings befitting Twenty20 cricket. He completed his 50, which came in just 23 balls, with a huge six off R. Ashwin. He hit another towering one off the bowling of Amarnath.

The Mumbai camp had every reason to feel that they would win with many balls to spare. So brilliantly was Tendulkar batting. However, just when he looked certain to carry the team through and also complete a deserving hundred, Amarnath bowled him neck and crop with a ball that kept very low.

Tendulkar's 68 runs came off 32 balls. The 10 fours and two sixes that he smashed showed the disdain with which he treated the Tamil Nadu bowlers.

Mumbai were 118 for 5 when Tendulkar left. Surprisingly, the rest of batsmen caved in against some really intelligent and economical bowling by the Tamil Nadu spinners, particularly C Ganapathy.

Muzumdar scored 1, Vinit Indulkar 12, Agarkar 1 and Zaheer 3.

Wicketkeper Vinayak Samant and Nilesh Kulkarni were not out on 9 and 21 respectively as Mumbai posted 157 for 8 in 20 overs.

Ganpathy was the wrecker-in-chief with amazingly economical figures of 4-1-15-3. He bowled a maiden over to Zaheer Khan, something rare in this type of cricket. Prasanna was also economical as he gave away only 13 runs in his two overs while taking a wicket.

Earlier, batting first after losing the toss, Tamil Nadu scored 172 for 5 in 20 overs. Opener S Anirudha, who failed against Bengal on Sunday, made amends with a sparkling 49 off 39 balls and hit six fours.

His partner V Devendran also batted well and scored a breezy 30 (20balls, 6x4). The two put on 51 for the first wicket and gave a sound start to their team.

While Hemang Badani scored 23 off 19 balls, inclusive of a four and six, Dinesh Kaarthick scored 26 off 14 deliveries. He hit three fours and a six.

S. Vidut also contriubted a quickfire 28 (22 balls, 2x4).

No Mumbai bowler could make an impression on the Tamil Nadu batsmen, including Zaheer Khan, who was hit for 34 runs in his four overs, and Agarkar, who gave away 21 in his 2 overs.

In Tuesday's matches at Motera, Mumbai takes on Haryana in the morning while Bengal plays Madhya Pradesh in the evening.

Not SRT's fault if someone drops a catch. the thing is he capitalized on that mistake rather than nick the next ball to slip

Why does he not bat with the same freedom against international teams. He terrorises the likes of Sreesanth and Chawla and the others at home and then goes and peddles around against the likes of mitchell johnson.

Actually, this is more so in test matches than ODIs.

Nevertheless, a good effort.

Tendulkar blasting the minnows again....

Mumbai crushed Haryana by eight wickets in their second Group B match, in the All India Inter-State Twenty20 tournament at the Sardar Patel stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad, on Tuesday.

Sachin Tendulkar played yet another explosive innings, and this time his teammates ensured his effort did not go waste as was the case in the shocking defeat to Tamil Nadu on Monday.

Mumbai required only 126 runs to win the match, which they scored in only 14.4 overs for the loss of two wickets.

Tendulkar scored 69 off 40 balls, inclusive of nine fours and two sixes, before he was bowled by leg spinner Amit Mishra.

Tendulkar and Ajinkya Rahane, who remained not out on 50, put on 100 for the first wicket and laid a solid foundation for Mumbai's convincing triumph. The youngster, too, seemed to derive inspiration from his legendary partner and played a fine innings.

Like Tendulkar, Rahane also executed brilliant shots while parading his talents. His fifty came off 43 balls and was studded with six fours.

Earlier, Haryana could muster only 125 for 9 in 20 overs after electing to bat. They came a cropper against left-arm spinner Iqbal Abdulla, who had an outstanding day, claiming five wickets for ten runs in the four overs he sent down. Rohit Sharma also bowled very well and finished with figures of 3-0-18-1.

For Haryana, Amit Mishra scored 31 (19 balls, 5x4), Sunny Singh 27 (25 balls, 3x4) and Mahesh Rawat 22 (22 balls, 1x6).

Chougule guides Karnataka home

Special Correspondent
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chougule's 36-ball 41 had five hits to the fence
Rahul Dravid made only one off eight balls
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mumbai: Deepak Chougule displayed his resources, hitting bold and innovative shots, to bring victory for Karnataka with three balls to spare against Gujarat in the BCCI's inaugural Twenty20 cricket championship at the Wankhede Stadium here on Tuesday.

Chougule pulled his weight with a 36-ball 41 with five hits to the fence.

In pursuit of 152 to record its first win, Karnataka seemed set to slump further from 38 for four with Rahul Dravid making only one off eight balls.

But Chougule and B. Akhil caused the initial turnaround raising 51 off 34 balls after which Vinay Kumar and Sunil Joshi struck some strong blows including a few over the line. Karnataka required five of the last over and fittingly, Chougule punched left-arm seamer Ashraf Makda over the packed off-side field.

Earlier, Gujarat faltered after the first and third wicket pairs produced 55 and 53 runs respectively. Parthiv Patel smashed five fours to make an 18-ball 26, while Azhar Bilakhia made a 47-ball 62 with half a dozen fours and a six.

The scores: Gujarat: 151 for nine in 20 overs (Azhar Bilakhia 62, Parthiv Patel 26, R. Vinay Kumar three for 31, S. Arvind two for 25, B. Akhil two for 24) lost to Karnataka 154 for six in 19.3 overs (Deepak Chougule 41 not out, B. Akhil 35, Hitesh Majmudar two for 21, Vishvajit Solanki two for 31).

Monday's match: Karnataka 142 for seven in 20 overs (B. Akhil 33, Devraj Patil 31, C. Raghu 32, L. Abhilish two for 23) lost to Punjab 146 for three in 19.5 overs (R. Ricky 76 not out, Yuvraj Singh 25, Dinesh Mongia 35

Karnataka outplayed Orissa by 44 runs to record their second successive win in the Inter-State All India Twenty20 Tournament in Mumbai.

Put in to bat, Karnataka set a challenging target of 158 runs before Orissa, who were looking for their first win in the tournament.

A fluent half-century by Dravid (54) and a fine effort from opener Devraj Patil (44) rescued Karnataka from an early jolt.

Following the loss of Robin Utthappa in the third over, Dravid, who smacked nine boundaries in his 35-ball knock, added 88 runs for the second wicket with stumper Patil.

Middle-order batsman Deepak Chougule's unbeaten quickfire 29 helped Karnataka to a competitive score.

Orissa, chasing Karnataka's total of 157 for 7, were never in the hunt and were dismissed for 113 in the final over.

They had a bad start, losing opener B Mohapatra off the second ball, and kept on losing wickets at regular intervals that proved to be their undoing.

A brief period of resistance followed when skipper Prabhanjan Mullick (40) was at the crease but it only delayed the inevitable once Orissa had lost half of their side for only 66 runs.

BTW, the sad part is that apart from DNA, I did not see any newspaper devote much space to Iqbal Abdullah's 5-10 in four overs. Amazing stats in a 20-20 match!

Twenty20: Mumbai, TN score easy wins

Mumbai convincingly defeated Madhya Pradesh by 44 runs in their third Group B match, in the Inter-State Twenty20 cricket tournament at the Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad, on Wednesday.

Madhya Pradesh won the toss and chose to field first. Though Sachin Tendulkar failed for the first time in the competition (he had earlier scored 68 against Tamil Nadu and 69 versus Haryana), captain Amol Muzumdar and promising young batsman Rohit Sharma ensured that Mumbai posted an impressive total without much ado.

Anand Raju bounced back to claim Tendulkar's wicket as the batsman was held at mid-on just after he whacked the bowler for three consecutive fours. He made 13.

Muzumdar, who seemed to make amends for his earlier lack of big scores in the tourney, scored a fine innings of 57 off just 35 balls. It was quite a sight to see the usually quiet Muzumdar take the bowling apart, as he hit four fours and a massive six.

Sharma maintained his good run with the willow and blasted the hapless Madhya Pradesh bowlers while playing an aggressive knock of 39 off 25 deliveries, inclusive of two sixes and four fours.

The highlight of Sharma's innings was the 26 runs (inclusive of 2 sixes and 2 fours) he scored off Shantanu Pitre's over. The Madhya Pradesh fast bowler did not know what hit him as Sharma just kept smashing all his deliveries.

Musavir Khote, too, was not at all behind Sharma in terms of aggression. He scored 31 off merely 17 balls and hit two sixes and a four.

Mumbai finished at 188 for six in 20 overs.

With 2 for 39, Abbas Ali was the most successful Madhya Pradesh bowler.

Madhya Pradesh badly needed to win this tie. And though Brijesh Tomar and Rahul Bakshi tried their best, the team could not go beyond 144 for 6 in 20 overs, falling short by 44 runs.

Tomar scored 57 (56 balls, 6x4, 1x6) and Bakshi 40 (31 balls, 3x4, 1x6).

Ajit Agarkar was the most successful bowler for Mumbai with figures of 4-0-27-2. Zaheer Khan and Iqbal Abdulla also took a wicket each.

Tamil Nadu thrash Haryana

Later in the evening, under floodlights, Haryana suffered yet another defeat in the tournament, losing to Tamil Nadu by 51 runs.

Needing to score 163 to win the game, their batsmen produced another lacklustre display and all they could put together was 111 in 19.4 overs against some fine bowling by S Vidut (4-0-14-3), P Amarnath (4-0-25-2) and V Yomahesh (4-0-29-2).

Only Vishal Sinha and Sandeep Singh, who both scored 25 runs, handled the Tamil Nadu bowlers with some confidence and character.

Batting first on winning the toss, Tamil Nadu were all out for 162 on the last ball of the final over of their innings. India wicketkeeper Dinesh Kaarthick showed glimpses of his class with the willow while essaying 37 off 27 balls.

Kaarthick, who is about to tie the knot, hit five fours and a six.

The other Tamil Nadu batsmen who chipped in with useful contributions were S Vidut (30 off 18 balls, 1x4, 2x6), V Devendran  (26 off 26 balls, 4x4) and S Anirudha (22 off 16 balls, 3x4).

For Haryana, Jitendra Billa took four wickets for 26 runs and Amit Mishra and Gaurav Vashistha two each.

On Thursday, the last day of the competition, Tamil Nadu take on Madhya Pradesh in the day match, while Mumbai plays Bengal in the evening

Tamil Nadu defeated Madhya Pradesh by 12 runs in their last Group B match at Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad on Thursday morning to keep alive their hopes of making it to the final, which will depend on the result of the Bengal-Mumbai clash.

Tamil Nadu, with consecutive wins over Haryana and Madhya Pradesh, dashed Mumbai's hopes of making it to the final of the maiden edition of the inter-state Twenty20 championship.

Tamil Nadu defeated Mumbai from a losing position on Monday.

The Ranji champions have paid a heavy price for that. Even if they beat Bengal, Tamil Nadu will make the final on account of their earlier win over Amol Muzumdar's team. While if Bengal win, they will be through having beaten Tamil Nadu in the group.

It was yet another low-scoring match and if the Madhya Pradesh batsmen had shown some application, they would have won the game and disturbed all calculations.

Batting first, Tamil Nadu were all out for 143 in 19.3 overs against some very good bowling by Anand Rajan and T. Sudhindar, who claimed 3 for 34 and 2 for 19 respectively.

M Vijay with 35 off 29 balls (2x4, 1x6) was the top scorer for Tamil Nadu. Dinesh Kaarthick (27) and S Vidyut (25) again batted well and lent some respectability to their team's score.

Madhya Pradesh, which has not done well in this competition, had a chance to salvage some pride. But they could score only 131 for 5 in the stipulated 20 overs with M Pasha (25) and Rahul Bakshi (23 not out) making useful contributions.

Madhya Pradesh's excessively cautious approach was a bit surprising, considering they had nothing to lose, being already out of the tournament.

Powered by an aggressive half-century from Yuvraj Singh, Punjab registered an emphatic 71-run win over Orissa on Thursday to enter the final of the All-India inter state Twenty20 tournament.

Replying to an imposing Punjab score of 201 for 5, bottom-placed Orissa succumbed to pressure and could manage just 130 for 7 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Looking extremely comfortable on a good batting surface, Yuvraj belted eight boundaries and four sixes in his 39-ball knock of 70 to help Punjab record the highest total so far in the tournament.

Giving Yuvraj fine support was another southpaw Dinesh Mongia (43), with the duo adding 91 runs in just 61 balls for the third wicket.

Middle-order batsman Bipul Sharma with an unbeaten 26 off just 11 balls, played his part in helping Punjab cross the 200-run mark.

With Punjab gaining their third victory in Group A,  the last match between Railways and Karnataka to be played later in the day remains of just academic interest.

Brief scores: Punjab 201 for 5 in 20 overs (Yuvraj Singh 70, Dinesh Mongia 43, Bipul Sharma 26 no) beat Orissa 130 for 7 in 20 overs (P Jaychandra 39, Bikash Pati 30, Amit Uniyal 3 for 22).

Punjab to meet Tamil Nadu in final

http://content-ind.cricinfo.com/ci/content/story/291442.html

A day before the Indian team for the tour of Bangladesh was to be selected, Yuvraj Singh hammered a stylish 70 to win Punjab a berth in the final of the domestic Twenty20 championships, where they will take on Tamil Nadu (see points table). After failing to fire in each of Punjab's first three matches in this tournament, where he made 0, 25 and 12, Yuvraj came to the party in fine style against Orissa, going after the bowling with characteristic freedom and aggression, giving full expression to his range of strokes.

Being put in to bat, Punjab's strong batting line-up put up the first 200-plus score of the tournament. Ravneet Ricky, who has been scoring consistently, made 25 at the top of the order, but it was Yuvraj and Dinesh Mongia (43) who did the serious damage. Early on in his innings, Yuvraj was content just looking to hit fours, and his powerful pulling on a good batting surface meant that the fielders had plenty of work to do retrieving the ball from the boundaries. In addition to his eight fours, Yuvraj launched four sixes, one of which ended up on the roof of the stands over midwicket. Yuvraj's 39-ball 70 took Punjab to 201.

Orissa had little chance of chasing down the target and ended on 130 for 7 from 20 overs, falling well short of the target before them. One of the talking points, after Yuvraj's innings, was the bowling of Harbhajan Singh, who managed 1 for 15 from two overs. Although Twenty20 is hardly a stage to judge a bowler, the outing at least gave Harbhajan a chance to get some overs under his belt in a competitive situation.

"You need to play a lot more in Twenty20 to get an idea of what to do and what not to do," Harbhajan said soon after the game ended. He also felt that Twenty20 was the sort of game where raw strength and power, rather than skill, would help batsmen succeed. He called the format a "fun game", although who was having fun under the scorching Mumbai sun, with no spectators at the ground, was not immediately clear. "You need bowlers who can be effective in this game if you want to win," said Harbhajan, while adding, "The challenge of playing Twenty20 at the domestic level is less. Bowling to the world's best batsmen is not so easy."

And it has not been an easy few months for Harbhajan. Although he has enjoyed the support of his captain and the selectors, the wickets are not coming as easily as they used to and the bowler who gave the ball a rip and bamboozled the Australians to the tune of 32 wickets from three Tests back in 2001, seems a distant, faded memory. Harbhajan, today, is an offspinner who bowls flat rather flighted, restrictive rather than hungry for wickets. In his last 50 ODIs he does not even average one wicket a game, with just one five-wicket haul. Each of his 48 scalps has come at an price of 38.43 runs. These are not the numbers of a champion offspinner leading an attack.

When the selectors and the team management sit down to pick the team for Bangladesh, Ramesh Powar will be the first spinner they agree on. If Dravid bats for Harbhajan, as he has in the past, then there's a chance he'll keep his place, albeit under careful scrutiny, with a clear brief to bowl for wickets. The one thing going in Harbhajan's favour is that Powar is a naturally attacking bowler, and this might make space for a bowler who is restrictive. Also, just as Anil Kumble's career - at least in Tests - was boosted massively by the competition for a place that Harbhajan brought, and he was forced to become a more versatile bowler, this might be the chance for Harbhajan to take his game to the next level. Whether that opportunity will be afforded to him, depends on the thinking of the selectors, the captain and Ravi Shastri, the cricket manager.

Three of the selectors - Dilip Vengsarkar, Bhupinder Singh and Ranjib Biswal - have plenty of time to talk about the decisions they would take tomorrow as they watched a match of no consequence, between Karnataka and Railways. Rahul Dravid, under the weather, didn't play, and Railways knocked off the 163 runs they needed to register a facile win.

TN triumph in Twenty20 tournament

Tamil Nadu emerged winners in the country's inaugural domestic Twenty20 tournament, for the Mushtaq Ali Trophy, beating formidable Punjab by two wickets in the final, played under lights, at the Brabourne stadium on Saturday.

Following a fine job by their bowlers, things were superbly set for Tamil Nadu, but they almost made a hash of a simple run-chase before Yo Mahesh performed the rescue act.

Needing 10 runs to win off the final over, which was bowled by Yuvraj Singh, tail-ender Yo Mahesh produced a six through the mid-wicket region off the second ball to change the complexion of the game and guide Tamil Nadu home with two balls to spare.

Batting first after winning the toss, Punjab made an extremely confident start, with openers Ravneet Ricky (24) and left-handed Karan Goel (26) putting on 43 in just six overs. However, thereafter, they lost their way as wickets fell at regular intervals.

Here credit should go to the Tamil Nadu bowlers, who came back strongly after an early onslaught and restricted Punjab to 134 for 8.

Crucial run-outs of key players Yuvraj Singh and skipper Pankaj Dharmani in the middle of their innings prevented Punjab from maintaining the momentum.

R Prasanna was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2 for 12, while new ball bowler C Ganapathy also chipped in with two wickets.

Tamil Nadu, who were extremely disappointing in the field, made a bright start to their reply, with openers S Anirudha (19) and Y Devendran (24) rattling off 42 runs in just four overs.

At the half-way point of their innings, when skipper Dinesh Karthick (19) and left-handed S Vidyut (27) who shared a 35-run stand for the third wicket, were at the crease, Tamil Nadu looked in complete control of the run-chase.

However, the final which witnessed fluctuating fortunes, saw another twist with a major collapse ensuing as Tamil Nadu explicably slid from 89 for 3 to 125 for 8, losing three wickets in the penultimate over bowled by off-spinner Karan Goel (4 for 13).

The winners, Tamil Nadu were presented the trophy by former India captain Sunil Gavaskar.

Scores: Punjab 134 for 8 in 20 overs (Karan Goel 26, Ravneet Ricky 24, R Prasanna 2 for 12, C Ganapathy 2 for 34) lost to Tamil Nadu 135 for 8 in 19.4 overs (S Vidyut 27, Y Devendran 24, Karan Goel 4 for 13, VRV Singh 2 for 32).
