Well-- we know that the heights claimed can be wrong, or shall we say fudged-- so it is possible Murali is only 5'8 when he wears heels ;)

Funny cartoon but Sourav is actually a born righty --he does everything with his right hand except bat. The reason for his left handed batting were early influences on batting.

What were the influences that changed him to leftie batsman? Just curious.
Maybe they shud not have altered him and he'd play a stronger game? Sometimes forced alterations are'nt good.

fineleg"

I think SG modeled himself on his brother who is a southpaw.

its interesting how that happens in sports

An interesting and fascinating case is that of Ken Rosewall, one of the great Aussie Tennis players who won several Grand Salm tournaments. Rosewall was a natural left hander but when he grew up, all tennis coaching manuals were for right handed players. So he learnt to play right handed (taught initially by his father), and was mighty successful as a right hander.

It is a matter of conjecture how good or how much better he would have been had he played with his natural hand.

This is not necessarily a bad thing. When you are batting left handed, your right hand (which is your stronger hand) is on the top and you can play more fluently and late than when you are a bottom handed batsmen. Note that Inzamam ul Haq is left handed but bats right handed. Also most of the bowlers  are right handed, this aids on to the batsmen being left handed.  Well, atleast that is my theory and i am making my son (yes i am older than most of you on this board :-) to bat left handed even though he is right handed.

Very good point psk. But make sure your son does not turn out to be a bottom handed player! I expect him to drive on either sides of the wicket more fluently with a lighter bat than hook or pull with a heavy one with the bottom hand coming on strong. Sounds like a description of SG does it not? Just teach psk junior to get on top of those fast rising deliveries, concentrate like Dravid, and he'll be fine.
