Bangladesh bowling
« on: April 08, 2007, 03:31:20 AM »
Hindsight is 20/20, but:

- 3 left arm spinners for Bangladesh on slow pitches, with at least 2 of them I saw better than Harbhajan Singh in ODIs
- 1 usually accurate left arm seamer who can vary pace well (again on a slow wicket).
- Athletic fielding side with nothing to lose.

And the old adage, bowling wins matches. Doesn't this make them very dangerous to score against?

I think Bangladesh have proven that having a bevy of decent slow spinning options on these WI pitches is going to be a handful. Our so called think tank either totally missed that, or, as seems to be the case, dropping Pawar was highly shortsighted.

Sri Lankans are the best players of spin in the world now, so them dismantling Bangla by totally attacking them (Jaya was lucky and far from convincing at the start) was a good strategy. If Bangla can make 200 in their batting and then defend, the odds should usually lie with them.

SA and ENG dont play (good) spin bowling that well.

Bangladesh has exceeded expectations hugely, but I doubt that they can get to semis.

i doubt Bangla had or have any real aims of making the semis. but, they wanted to make a mark - and they certainly have. if they win another one (apart from Ireland) this WC will be remembered (by all, not just Bangladeshis) for their victories in the years to come. they have upset the applecart that is for sure.
Mind you, if they win their next game (before the Ireland match),  i think it is against England, then they may entertain thoughts of the semis after all.

Well they should have aims of making it to the semifinals, now, definitely.

I dont think we even reached that point in this WC. We had a handfull of slow bowling options but our batsmen have been non performing for sometime. Specially on the pitches which have something to help any kind of bowling. And Bhajji has been a disappointment for atleast last 5-6 months. He started doing well for sometime after GC took over but he is now back to bowling 10 overs for 45 runs. I think we should look at playing a left arm spin allrounder in the coming series and in the long run look at having 3 spin allrounder who can bowl btn 25-44 mark. VS should be one of them. SRT can be another. SRT in recent times have bowled as good as Bhajji a lot of time.
