'Batsmen let India down'

March 24, 2007

Sri Lanka virtually ended India's hopes of qualifying for the next stage at the World Cup after powering to a 69-run victory in their Group B match in Trinidad on Friday.

Chasing a target of 255, India were all out for 185 in 43.3 overs to go down tamely in this crunch match.

Only a loss for Bangladesh against minnows Bermuda in the last match in the group can see India sneak through to the Super Eights on a better run-rate.

Kiran More, former India wicketkeeper and chief selector, analyses the India-Sri Lanka match.

'The big disappointment for India was their batting. We failed to score 200 against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and our batting was a total failure,' he told Special Correspondent Harish Kotian.

'Sourav Ganguly should have taken the initiative [at the start]. Robin Uthappa is a junior player and Ganguly being the senior player should have taken the strike,' he added.

How many will you shut up. Once More stops, expect another member of the Mumbai cabal [say Shashank Manohar] will start shooting his mouth off!

The whole lot should be lobotomised so that they don't ever think of cricket, and the world would be served well.

See - each expert (so called) on media is paid to speak critically (not necessarily sensibly). If these experts have been successful sportsmen, then they know (within their heart) that - good and poor performances are part of game.
Any player wants to do his best on any given day. and SG is not the exception. Yes - his performance along with SRT / RU / YS / MSD was much below their ability; but does not a country win / lose a war !! It happens when there is collective failure for whatever reason.

Applause Prafulla. Yes, these guys lost. But no one went in there to "tank" it on purpose. These are first and foremost human beings who like anyone else experience highs and lows. The only question I might have is what are the odds that you would have guys who on a collective basis have been in a slump for a while (this pre dates world cup)? This applies to players- both young and old. In that sense, it might be productive to figure out whether the right conditions exist for getting the best out of our guys.
