Save a Patriot!

Prem Paniker the Patriot, that is.
..............I am pained by his discomfiture. :( He sounds no different from some of our own DG-grown 'patriots'). :glasses3:

Any Indians out there?

There is this sequence in the Tamil movie Mudalvan, helmed by director Shankar (remade, quite badly, as Nayak in Hindi, by the same director).

A group of college students are standing at a bus stop. The bus comes along but doesn't stop. The students, desperate to make it to their college for the exams, run after it and jump in. The driver promptly stops, insisting that the fellow who jumped in through the front door has to get off.

Words lead to a blow by the driver. The students pull the driver down, and beat him up.

Other buses stop, and the drivers and conductors jump into the fray.

Meanwhile, the offending driver is on the phone, insisting that his caste has been defamed. Next thing you know, a random incident has become a full fledged inter-caste riot.

I was reminded of that when I casually skimmed through some messages below my match report today. There is a bloke (of course, the nice thing about message boards is anonymity -- in other words, license to say spew whatever venom you have in your minds and hearts, without having to stand up for it before anyone) who says that I suggested Agarkar bowled badly because I am anti Mumbaikar. Earlier, there was a chap who said I was trying to denigrate Ganguly by referring to his somewhat scratchy, slow innings.

Now I am waiting for someone to suggest I critiqued Dravid's captaincy because I am anti Karnataka (it is another matter that according to the 'I am anti Ganguly' faction, I am supposed to be pro-Dravid).

That I suggested Sewhag needs some time out of the international spotlight because I am anti-Najafgarh.

Sigh.

Jingoism is the last refuge of those who have nothing more concrete to peg their self-esteem to, apparently.

The comedian -- or more accurately, political satirist -- Bill Maher once did a brilliant hour-long stand-up at, I think, Madison Square (I need to check my DVD of the event, to be certain).

It was titled 'I am Swiss'.

The theme was that people accused him of being anti-America, of hating America.

I don't hate America, was Bill's thesis -- I am merely embarrassed by its actions, to the point where nowadays I tell people I am Swiss.

At times, the goings on, in cricket discussion boards, produces in me a similar reaction -- of embarrassment, and a sort of bemused wonder.

The best part is that, this 'patriot' has been reduced to the pro-GC / anti-GC squabbles like all of us! :icon_jokercolor:

i have new found respect for Prem now - he has done commendable self-reflection, understood himself very well and has no fear of admitting it!

Nope, you got it wrong there.

Its about his deep knowledge of Merkin trivia. Check out the number of times he boasts about his various Merkin connections... I suspect he imagines himself as a NY hippie [with all the mod cons, of course]. If you want, I can even post an imaginary profile... later some of his 'fans' can then go and get it compared with the man himself!
