Can you believe S Sreesanth is an accomplished break-dancer? Not such a stunning revelation, considering he breaks into a jig on the ground every once in a while.

But what’s intriguing is that India’s newest pace sensation was a national break-dance champion once upon a time! And it’s something he is very, very proud of, even if he doesn’t admit it.

“Oh, that was a long time ago. It happened in my eighth standard,” he said with an awkward smile. But he admitted dance to him was a dear hobby, and of therapeutic value after a hard day’s play. “It’s something I love to be engaged in while I unwind,” he told Mid Day yesterday.

Incredibly, Michael Jackson is his favourite entertainer. Even after MJ is alleged to have had illicit relationships with adolescents. “How do I care what goes on in his personal life? It is what he does on the field that’s important to me. And to me, he is just an incredible dancer,” the 22-year-old said.

Interestingly, the Sreesanth we see on the field and the one we see off it, are so strikingly different. On it, he is like a demon steaming in, getting the wind and crowd behind him and hitting the deck hard. And when he gets his victim, he and his hair go wild in frenzy, as if possessed.

“I am aggressive on the field. But that’s because I always played against superior oppositions at junior level cricket. That fact used to motivate me.

“But off the field I wear glasses, study psychology and read a lot of books,” he revealed with a chuckle, adding that he was no nerd.

Which is what makes Sreesanth a man of many dimensions. He has a variety of interests. And his varied backgrounds of upbringing have played their parts too. His English reveals his Bangalorean roots. The Hindi has a distinct Delhi twang. And his Malayalam is very urbane — despite Kerala being a land of hamlets.

Another fact largely unknown is that he has been exceptional in other sports like hockey, table tennis and football… but of course. And that back home, he is called a ‘Prince of Hat-tricks’.

“I got a few, especially one against Karnataka. To get buddies like Deepak Chowgule and Stuart Binny was rewarding,” he said.

But despite being a man of many talents, cricket remains his chief occupation and vision for now.

“Anyone playing at this level is good. I’d like to think I am a capable cricketer!”

Not to take anything away from Sree Santh's versatility - that jig was more chippendale's than break dance!
