West Zone cruises to victory - Deodhar Trophy
« on: March 02, 2007, 08:51:52 PM »

Mumbai: After scoring a thrilling win against South Zone at Motera, East Zone crashed to a 105-run defeat and conceded five points to West Zone in their All Star Series Deodhar Trophy league match at the Brabourne Stadium here on Friday.

Once Rohan Gavaskar left the scene, East caved in, losing its last six wickets for just 26 runs and folded up for 134.

In the first competitive match played at the Brabourne Stadium after the ICC Champions Trophy final four months ago, it was the same story of the batsmen struggling to come to grips on a sluggish pitch.

Off-spinner Sourasish Lahiri, who bowled with purpose, was largely responsible for containing the home team to a modest 239. A few direct hits by Lahiri and Abishek Jhunjhunwala choked West after Yusuf Pathan had made a whirlwind half-century.

Parthiv chips in

From an encouraging 81 for one in the 17th over, West slumped to 140 for six before former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel showed his indomitable spirit and forged a 90-run stand with Sairaj Bahutule. The latter constructed a 54-ball 56 with five hits to the fence and followed it up with four for 23.

Patel also fell a run-out victim while trying to steal a second run. After Lahiri and Jhunjhunwala's fine and accurate throws that sent back Pathan and Rohit Sharma, Laxmi Ratan Shukla highlighted the overall fielding effort of East with a smart throw to dislodge Parthiv (46, 58b, 2x4).

Former India new ball bowler Debasis Mohanty began with a maiden over and looked sharp in his nine-over spell. He conceded a little under three runs an over, but Ranadeb Bose and Mihir Diwakar were not as economical.

Aggressive streak

Yusuf (55, 44b, 5x4, 3x6) lifted Bose for sixes over extra-cover and midwicket and also smashed Mihir Diwakar for a six on the off-side. After Yusuf's exit, Maharashtra lefthander Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Sharma hit the ball hard, but failed to find the gaps.

Once Lahiri trapped Kanitkar leg-before, wickets tumbled and the run-rate dipped before Parthiv and Bahutule raised a near-century partnership for the seventh wicket.

South will play Central on Saturday.

Yes, but SG alone is, as the Chinese would say, a 'Gangs' of four.

True that. SG (2) + Dex Langotiya (2) = 4.

Doesn't the West Zone usually include the son of the late Ramesh Tendulkar? What was his name again?
