Indian Captains
« on: February 24, 2007, 08:30:03 AM »

These days Rahul Dravid is the Indian Captain.  Before this, Saurav Ganguly was the Captain.  Under his captaincy India won the test matches in England,Australia,West Indies,Pakistan and Zimbabwe.  So he had the best record of wins in foregin pitches and maximum wins in Tests.  Under Mohd Azharruddin captaincy India had great domestic record for wins but was not successful at foreign wickets.

Sachin Tendulakar,Duleep Vengsarkar,Srikant were Captains for a brief period.  Sachin Tendulakar resigned from captaincy when India performed badly in Australia in 1996.  In 1989 Sri kant was removed from captaincy on his dismal performance in pakistan tour.  Duleep Vengsarkar was removed when he wrote the articles in press without the permission of cricket board.

Prior to this India won the 1983 world up under the captaincy of Kapil Dev and Benson and Hedges cup in 1985  when Sunil Gavaskar was captain.  Under the captaincy of Ajit Wadekar India won the first test match on the West Indies and England soils.  When Bishan Singh Bedi was captain Test matches in those days were boring endless draws.

Srikkanth had a dismal personal performance...but the tour in itself was creditable. The tour in which we saw a legend being born...Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar.

But, coming back from Pakistan with a drawn series was in itself an achievement to be proud of...given that Pakis were a stronger team than India,we were playing on their territory and there were no neutral umpires.

Also, the acrimonious treatment meted out to the Indian captain when one of the spectators tore off the shirt of Srikkanth are some of the sore points of that tour.

But, Srikkanth's removal from captaincy was more a retribution for his open support / lead of the players' remuneration issue and not his captaincy per se
