What is wrong with Sehwag?
« on: February 14, 2007, 03:06:35 PM »

We have spent a long time talking about the justification of Sehwag's inclusion in the WC squad. Now that he is in, and I am not watching the games, I would like to have a sort of technical perspective on what seems to be the cause of his ailment. This is what DP has to say in his Cricinfo verdict:

Quote
India's man-under-the-microscope couldn't produce anything similarly substantial. Being named in the 15 for the World Cup in the Caribbean might have removed the dangling sword from over Virender Sehwag's head, but the fallow run that has been his lot since the Champions Trophy half-century against Australia continued. Once again, the mode of dismissal was depressingly predictable. If it isn't the ball nipping back to crash into the stumps, it's the short-pitched delivery that has him jumping like a cat surprised by an air-gun. Unless there's a drastic reversal of fortune, the fast bowlers that congregate in the Caribbean will be licking their collective chops at the prospect of bowling to him.

Why are these things happening? Any ideas? Three boundaries in the first 8 balls he faced tells you that VS wants to dominate and play his usual game. Lack of confidence or tentativeness does not seem to be the issue here. Then what is?

I think he is desperate in tryig to justify his inclusion. To do that, he is trying to do what he does best. Blast the bowlers. But because he is off-form, he is not judging the deliveries accurately. Like today. On a normal day, Sehwag would have sighted that delivery early and inspite of being on front foot, he would have left that delivery alone. But, today he could not sight it and was suprised by the bounce.

I feel he is just trying to hard. He needs to do what SRT did. Play slow for some time and then accelerate. He is getting out before he gets a good feel of the pitch.

In my opinion, most of the fast bowlers have sorted Sehwag out - by keeping ball close to his body - specially coming into him. Great Ganguly also suffered from lean patch for this flaw. Fortunately, SG worked on this flaw and has come back as stronger batsman. VS must learn from SG's grit and application, and work out the solution. Since VS is not technically correct batsman - it will always take him longer time to find the rythym (provided he is lucky until then !!!!).
Ideally - VS must come lower the order, so that he does not have to face the tougher balls. I presume, RD decided to bring him lower the order in previous series - but our TRP driven half cooked media unreasonably busted the plot..
To me, the immediate solution is to make him play lower the order and let him milk the old ball.

He is short of luck. A big score will do him good. Maybe opening
against the minnows in the World Cup will help him like it did
Gayle & co. (when they played 5 one dayers against Zim).

Anyway let us not forget that Sehwag wasn't that great an
ODI batsman even in his prime.

BTW - Sehwag has better performances in Test matches than in ODI - and that too, in first inning ONLY. His ODI performance in past years has always been inconsistent and shaky. So he has never been very reliable player in any form of the game. His scores (though big in many innings) in ODI does not make him a great ODI player. Yes, on his day - he is a dangerous player (so his inclusion - with some gamble is worth it) and with his bowling ability, he is a utility player. I will not even compare him to devastating player like Chris Crains or Symonds; at the most - he is just like Afridi. So he must play at lower the order and finds his ways through.
