All eyes on Panesar, Uthappa, Jaffer in 3-day tie

By V Veera Kumar

Mumbai, February 17, 2006

All eyes will be on new England spinner of Indian origin Monty Panesar and two young talented openers - Robin Uthappa of Karnataka and Wasim Jaffer of Mumbai - when the England open their tour with a three-day match against Cricket Club of India (ICC) at the Brabourne Stadium from tomorrow.

Apart from Uthappa, the CCI have two other outstation players - fast bowlers Abid Nabi of Jammu and Kashmir and Munish Ansari of Madhya Pradesh - in their ranks.

The England team will be looking forward to some very good batting practice against former Indian spinner Nilesh Kulkarni and other young spinners while it is a big chance for their spinners like Ian Blackwell, Panesar and Udal to bowl at the Mumbai batsmen who are quite good against spin bowling.

For people like Uthappa, Nabi and Ansari it is big chance to catch the Indian selectors' eye and big score or a rich haul of wickets here might turn out to be a short cut to the Indian team as the forthcoming international schedule is quite full and there are bound to be wear and tear among the regular players.

Woah....
Abid Nabi I'm sure you guys have heard of, fast bowler, 20 years old, one of Venkatesh Prasad's picks.

But Munis Ansari, he was one of the finalists in the Scorpio Speedster Challenge. He didnt even win. But...Greg Chappell was present for the finals, saw something in him, brought him to bowl in the nets,
and here's Ansari's chance!
Tour opener against England.

Jaffer has pulled out of the game.

why the hell are england playing CCI?! Normally teams play the Boad President's XI -- Guess Pawar is showing who the real President is...(Dungarpur is president of CCI, in case anyone is lost)

Maybe it is team strategy-- they called up Uthappa in his place-- give Uthappa a shot in this match while Jaffer gets an opportunity in the BP XI game.

There's also the additional possibility that it is already decided that Jaffer will play in the first Test?

Jaffer should have played...an extra game or two does not hurt his preparation.
Why is he pulling out? Has he been asked to pull out? Does not sound like the correct strategy by BCCI / CCI whoever.

Jaffer would have been better off with the experience of playing the eng. quicks...not the other way.

The other reason might be both Jaffer and Gambhir may not be in the test squad...
