On making betting (on cricket or whatever) legal in India
« on: February 10, 2007, 08:12:41 PM »
Reading all these articles on betting controversy, it occured to me that people will bet, and there will be bookies and such because of that - no matter what. And other countries like Eng, Aus have legal gambling. So why not make betting legal in India, and tax the F*** off it ?? Lots of revenue, and a chance to monitor and control it. And given the choice, the aam janta will bet at the legal bookies' tables, and so we can route out the illegal buggers and control match fixers. Also this will prevent all the betting money ( no small change - in 100s of crores) from leaving India.

PS: Same argument for legalizing Pot in the US :D

So chime in with your votes!

Dont think it is the same with pot but I agree it should be legalized. That way atleast the government can get revenue out of it.

And there can be some oversight too.

Right now I can just imagine the pressure on the players from the underworld.

Betting should be legal. Players who fix games, or even provide inside information to bookies should be fined and banned.

Agree that betting should be legalized. What is so unethical about it? The only unethical thing will be if a player or person (such as selector/coach) directly involved with a game bets on the game.

The argument put forth by government is that such kind of betting will destroy families and turn the average man on the street into a gambling addict.

The fallacy in that line of argument is that the government by itself runs lottery schemes so whats the big difference between the two?
