Rs 1 cr a blurred vision: Ranji Trophy winners to get only Rs 7 lakh

MUMBAI: The prize money that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will hand over to Ranji Trophy champions, Mumbai, this season will be less than the winner’s bonus that the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) will hand over.

While the BCCI’s vision paper envisaged a Rs 1 crore prize money for Ranji Trophy winners as a step towards reviving domestic cricket, the bonanza has become a mere illusion.

The only time the proposal was discussed was during the first meeting of the working committee under president Sharad Pawar on December 4, 2005. That was when the vision paper was distributed among working committee members.

While the MCA is set to give Rs 1 lakh to each of the 19 members, who formed a part of the squad, the BCCI’s prize money will be only Rs 7 lakh for the whole team. It is the same amount the Mohammad Kaif- led Uttar Pradesh received for winning the 72-year-old trophy.

Ironically, all this at a time when the BCCI has claimed to have ‘marketed its properties’ for over $1 billion and is aiming to make it $1.5 billion over the next three years.

BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah said that the Ranji Champions will get no increased prize money this year. “Yes, there was a proposal in the vision paper, but it has not been put into practice. We will not be able to enhance the prize money this year. It can only be done from the next season onwards,” Shah, said. He also confirmed that the increased prize money of Rs 1 crore is not on the agenda of the Indian cricket board’s working committee meeting to be held in New Delhi on Wednesday.

MCA treasurer Prof Ratnakar Shetty said that the bonus of Rs 1 lakh to the 19 members was an incentive for the Mumbai players for doing so well this season.

Ranji Trophy players are much poorer cousins than their teammates who play for India . While a Ranji Trophy player gets approximately Rs 16,000 per day amounting to about Rs 64,000 for a four-day game, an Indian team player gets Rs 2 lakh for a Test and Rs 1.6 lakh for an ODI if the series is played in India and a little more for on overseas game.
