Andrew Symonds may miss WC
« on: February 03, 2007, 12:57:58 PM »
New Delhi: The Australian team was handed a severe jolt on Friday when star all-rounder Andrew Symonds was ruled out of the rest of the tri series featuring England and New Zealand.

"Symonds has ruptured the biceps tendon in the right shoulder and will receive surgery - probably as early as tomorrow - to repair the tendon," team doctor Trevor James said.

With the injury surfacing six weeks prior to the World Cup, Symonds' chances look uncertain.

"Andrew will certainly miss the remainder of the Commonwealth Bank Series and will undergo intensive physiotherapy following surgery," he said in a statement.

A lynchpin of the Australian middle order and a dab hand with the ball, Symonds suffered the injury while batting against England during their match in Sydney on Thursday, which they lost by a handsome 92 runs.

"His return to cricket will depend on his progress," James said.

Symonds himself was uncertain about the magnitude of his injury. "We won't know how bad this injury is until after surgery. I felt it go during the game but I didn't realise how bad it was. I batted on but the pain was considerable and I was advised by team physio Alex Kountouris to come off.

"I feel optimistic about the future because I know I'm a good healer - my wrist injury healed quicker than expected and is fine now. I'll do whatever it takes to get back as quickly as possible," Symonds added.

Oz will obviouslyh miss symonds and with the retirement of martyn theye don't have a ready middle order replacement. It may be a problem for them, something that teams could look to exploit.

Cameron White will be a regular in the team then and he is pretty good.  They have too many international quality players.
