GC has saved himself by atleast wining the ODI series.

GC's record of 16-9-1 is quite good considering that we played 22 of those 26 ODIs against teams ranked 2 or 3....

India fielding well. Reason, AK, SG, VVS not in the team. No wait, I dont say that these guys dont deserve to be in the team, but just that these are the slowest movers around and having three of them in the team is two many !!! If all three play in a match we will concede atleast 25 more runs, miss the chance of making 3 run outs and probably miss some catches as well.

less runs conceded + additional wickets due to good catching + run outs = Less runs and more pressure for the opposition = Less pressure and less runs for us to get.

Slowly VS is also trying to join the list above. His fielding of late has not been upto the mark and if he continues to be inconsitent with the bat / and ball, then it will become increasingly difficult for him to justify his position in the team.

Schumi, I don't agree with the catching part. Ganguly, whose fielding is not quite Kaif level, hasn't dropped too many catches. VVS drops some, but he's a slip catcher, and that's expected. Most international cricketers can catch well -- it's the run outs that suffer, perhaps.

Yup. All 3 are very reliable catchers.

All are reliable, but maybe schumi is referring more to half chances-- ones that some of these players may not have the athleticism to get a hand to.

Sahir:

How many players in the Indian team actually can get to half chances ?

I count 3 - Kaif, Yuvraj, Raina -maybe Badani if selected. These guys are all round fielders plus good catchers -full and half chances

Other than that what else do we have on the fielding front ?

All round good fielders   - Pathan, Agarkar, SRT, maybe HS

Good catchers, avg to poor in the outfield -- VVS, RD, SG, VS, AK

I have seen AA pick up exceptional catches and score direct hits to get run outs

Yeah-- I agree with this assessment; never disagreed; simply tried to explain what schumi might have been alluding to

Yup. AA has done everyting. picked up blinders, hit stumps direct from boundaries. dropped sitters, missed stumps from point blank range. In other words, exceptional to very ordinary on the field. He's just a maverick. Even he doesen't know which Agarkar will show up I think at any point of time in the match  ;D ;D

As Sahir pointed out I was referring to converting half / difficult chances and in general about being athletic. Normal players can take normal catches on normal days, but we need special players on the field to take special catches (Like Kaif's forward dive against SL in WC) on special days (WC Final).
