my toshiba laptop (3 ghz, not too old) used to work fine till a month ago. then i didnt use it till yesterday. now, it powers on for 5 seconds then immediately shuts off again. not sure what has happend. the only thing i can think of is the little bit of fall it took some time ago (but it was from a chair--laptops can't possibly be that weak?)

any ideas? would a hard drive crash explain the problem? or something far more sinister has happend?

Going for the obvious - maybe the battery doesn't hold too much charge anymore ? Did you try running it plugged on ?

Don't think a hard drive crash is the answer. You can try booting from an live linux distro (An OS which runs off an USB stick/CD) just to make sure.

Hmm...if you dropped it, it may be that one of the connectors, cables, cards may have popped out of its respective sockets. If that is the case, it should be an easy fix. If you have tech center at your uni, they might be able to help you.

actually make it 3 seconds. it stays blank. the noise is the same as when starting a laptop...then when it shuts off it goes "phew"

laptops are fickle. may be a mother-board problem too...happenned to me.
But likely, it is just a snapped out connection somewhere.
all the best!

Unless you have the tools to open up the laptop to take a look ( you might void the warranty if you do that - so watch out !), take it to someone who can do it for you. Without physical access, it is kinda hard to say what is wrong with hardware issues.

Maybe you should try putting it on your lap and petting it...if it does not work, give it a decent burial and buy one of these  ;)
