my question is this - i guess the question of "smartness" arises because these women are looking at the CD and adjusting their make-up/hair etc. why is it naturally assumed that a woman who pays attention to looks has to be "dumb"?
why can't both co-exist?

Didnt Blwe give us proof of the co-existance already ? :D :D

grrr..time for you all to show ur faces too :P

i was pondering over the general assumptions. quite silly!

i am also pondering this...DG-ians any answer to Mock's question?

Because beauty with brains is not a common find. It works both ways -for men and women.

people blessed with good looks have it easy in life to a certain extent, because they find favors handed to them on  a platter without them having to raise a finger. This usually benefits women more than men because usually its the men who are in power and they are also more susceptible to the charm a womans beauty flashes (old fashioned chauvinism and patronization at play)

So much opulence without asking breeds complacency and a complacent man / woman usually learns to maximize the god given attribute at the cost of ignoring the other (brain, which needs to be developed --after all a brain is only of use if it is honed and imbibed with knowledge).

Its human nature really. Why work hard when the status quo is working fine ?

hence the assumption. is it a broad generalization --yes.

Does that mean beauty and brains do not exist in women --NO, a portion of that demographic does hone their brain too.

Is the generalized stereotype true -- by and large it is true. of course some of us like the exceptions to the generalized stereotype.

Considering her intelligence and clever writing, I expected her to be (how do I put it kindly) not so attractive. Nice to know that she is in that rare category of people which has got the best of all worlds.

kban,

To say "pun intended" you need to "pun" to begin with. What exactly was the pun here ?

actually, my point was something different. it is generally assumed that women(independent of their "looks") who pay attention to their appearance are airheads and looked down upon. i too have contempt for men or women who pay attention to ONLY their looks and not to the development of the mind. but it isn't all that bad to be well-groomed in addition to other interests, is it?

ETC board is very quiet - see now there are lotsa cricket threads -
1. Cricket has to be in season
2. India has to play 'somewhat' ok atleast
for cricket threads to be prominent, else ETC. will be the active board. The posters are not to be blamed. Tis' the (cricket) season folks!
