« on: December 23, 2006, 05:28:03 PM »
This video is for SGUSA ..
http://www.youtube.com/v/0WWPYuw4CVY&rel=0

Should go very well with canned tomatoes and tomato paste based dishes?

What say you, MT? [I know you are cringing and shaking your head]

Let me put on MT's super snob hat and say "Bleeechhh". :D

PS: I suppose, just like artificial diamonds, this is structurally and inflavor the same as the normally aged wine, but just like diamonds, I dont think people would approve of the insta-wine!

PPS: Atleast, little kids werent harmed ( that i know of :D ) in making wine the normal way!!!

The insta-version?

Add this to the list of retrograde inventions - including boxed wines.

Oban (from Islay) is awesome. Has that touch of maple and citrus.
I absolutely love Rowan Atkinson's church scene in that movie

Oban isn't from Islay, it is a west highland scotch. Lagavulin is a famous Islay scotch, maybe you were thinking of that ? I went to this scotch tasting and got to try all the originals - Oban, Lagavulin, Talisker and one more I forget the name of. Got to taste the 100th anniversary edition of Talisker - Freaking smoke filled - like biting a piece of charcoal to begin with and then smoothness - a velvet blanket of smoke.

Color - Deep gold.
Nose - Tendrils of smoke wafting on a sea breeze through a peach orchard.
Palate - Smooth and warming, with hint of peat and seaweed, yet medicinal and dry.
Finish - Smooth satisfying smoke.

ah, that makes it crystal clear - i wd sense it a mile away now. smoke, wafting, seabreeze, peach? ::) ::)

ok, all ye sommeliers, tell me this - some other bloke describes this same liquid using the following terms. why does his nose tell smthing different? what am i to look for? peach or sea?

Color - Full gold to amber
Nose - A whiff of the sea, but also a touch of fresh peat, and some maltiness.
Body - Firm, smooth and slightly viscous.
Palate - Deceptively delicate at first. Perfumy. Faint hint of fruity seaweed. Then lightly waxy, becoming smoky. Dry
Finish - Aromatic, smooth, appetizing..

you are right..Oban is from West Highlands but has an Islay style smokiness to it. Laphroaig is the another famous Islay Scotch along with Caol Ila.
Yeah, I drove to Isle of Skye when I used to live in England...but then I was not into Whisky...hence did not taste Talisker. My next trip to England/Scotland would include a Whisky tour.

Look at the palate notes on the first tasting note. That matches the 'nose' notes from the second. Sometimes the two get mixed, since smell and taste are rather inter-dependent.

PS: Definetly the whole experiance is quite personal, also depending on what you had before you did the tasting, other influencers/pollutants in the surrounding etc. Highly trained tasters will be affected by such factors. But you do get a general idea.

PPS: If you havent actually experianced ( looked at/smelled/swirled/tasted) a good scotch, you will obv not get it! :D

LN, here's the gist :

SGUSA calls me a DONKEY
I say that he wouldn't lead a nice life coz he called me a DONKEY on my b'day
He says that he will send anything to the DONKEY as a b'day gift
I asked him to send me his cobalt blue pot and I will treat it the right way by buying fresh tomatoes from the market.
He has asked for the DONKEY's address.

I am right now enjoying a steaming hot cup of Glogg ( mulled wine+port+brandy concotion :D)! It is spicy n delicious!

I am sipping Glenlivet 18.... neat!

Once the Glogg is done,I start on a nice bottle of 14 yr old Oban (West highland Single Malt, one of the original scotchs! ) :D

PS: Watching 4 weddings and a funeral ( dont ask!), I know the proliferation of "beep, bugger, and other assorted british utterances :D )

well, during my rounds in Scotland, i was forced to 'taste' a bunch of stuff. but ain't into this whole business and so can't say much about it all.

Cause she said that she was "made" to taste the "stuff" ( SCOTCH!!!) on her trip to scotland, but she wasnt into such things. So I used a saying in Tamil that means "will the donkey know the smell of camphor", ie "you cant appreciate good things in life, so you are no better than a donkey that meanders about its life" :D

Hmm.. the Tamil equivalent of "Bandar kya jaane adrak ka swad" (a monkey cannot appreciate the fine taste of ginger).

interestingly, there is a saying in tamizh that goes "inji tinna koRangu matiri" meaning "(you) look like a monkey that has eaten ginger". so, if a tamilian calls someone a gem, he/she cd very well mean "ginger eating monkey". :-)

The latter. to fully comprehend, throw in a piece of ginger at the monkey cage (Ruchir stay off :D ) during your next visit to the zoo.
