VB Series 2nd Final: Aus v SL at SCG [02/12]
« on: February 11, 2006, 11:08:50 PM »
A must win situation for Aus - a very rare event indeed.

The aussie bowling looks rather vurnable without inimitable McGrath at one end holding the fort for others to fire away.

SL needs Jaya to fire as usual. If he is off, he can make a big difference.
Sanga and Pattu will be the other key guys as usual. The best bat come out bat - the islanders have since learnt the simple trick and have pushed Pattu up the order. He is a serene sign of stability compared the the likes of Mabarak,Taranga and others.

For Aus, the time is now to tighten up the bowling department. If Aussies find it tough to hang on tonite, Gellispie could get a recall for next ODIs.  Katich and Martyn may be on their way out.
Aussies have a lot to answer for themselves - interesting times ahead.

Here we go - Gilly on strike - Vaas to open the attack - Katich is the non-striker.

SHould be a cracker!

bummer - gilly is gone already -
was waiting for his fireworks; now need to wait till Jaya comes in;

Katich just got lucky to edge away for some welcome runs.

Ponting on strike.

interesting field setting for Punter.  A leg gully in place.

He tends to hit in the air sometimes in that area.

Islanders have done their home work to take on the aussies.

Out!

Katich GONE!!!

Katich might have played his last ODI innings for a while if they go onto lose this one.

PLUMB!

Good swing bowling by Vaas.
Making use of the early conditions (a late start did not help)
The ball is still swinging a lot.   tough conditions for batting so far.

Good toss to lose for the islanders!

Martyn on fire.

He always starts with crisp boundaries before getting out!

What a great catch to dismiss Gilly!  Dilshan is simply the best

punter looking dangerous;
could hit a lot of runs or get out anytime; he does not want to hang around.

Martyn's UBD might have expired (UBD - use by date).
a string of low scores now after getting dropped from the Test side.
He has been getting out to indescriminate hitting these days - such a cool
customer he is - not like him at all.
The loss of Test position might be hurting him for all we know.

the bowling looks really thing without McGrath. Unless Lee gets early wicket courtesy umpires
the bowlers will come under a lot of pressure.  Most often, Lee gets LBWs thru his yorkers going down the leg side.

Hell to pay - most likely chop of Katich and Martyn.   Gillespie might come back in place of Lewis,Clark and other "jokers" by Aussie standards.

Interesting field positions for Symonds... they got a forward short leg !

Punter and Roy running a lot of risky singles.  They want to show they did not learn a lesson or two from the last match? Good pull shot  -  superb SIX.
Is punter the best puller in business these days?
Amazing hit !

I would get Murali right away to get Roy out. Roy simply goes crazy at the sight of Murali.

Islanders are missing a trick or two here I reckon..  ;D ;D

Symonds hit him for a 4 first up - the gloves are off !

SL wants wickets and Aussie want big shots!

lankies get egg on their face!!! haha, claiming the catch almost aggressively, dilshan was gesturing for ponting to take a hike, and given not out!! without asking for the 3rd umpire

it looked out to me; they could have asked for 3rd umpire; clearly the umps made a mistake here.
why not the tv umpire?  does not make sense... this could determine the outcome of the match.

because, as the commentators said, the tv umpire will almost always give it not out because of the doubt. the technology is not good enough.
brave move by the umpires to take a decision on their own- the right one too.

im sure ponting was counting on them calling for the 3rd umpire and him getting saved that way, but wow, he got lucky, they deemed it not out themselves.

SL losing their focus a little bit because of that dramatic event. but now aussies are starting to pump the accelerator

century for Ponting when it matters! sweet, but powerful knock. the aussies really looking to win this match in the first inning now, at 207-3 in 35.

murali, 10 overs for 99 (no wickets). worst odi bowling performance ever, if you exclude MC Snedden's 105 in 12 overs
