Oh Noo...Chappel Haters in a spot!

‘Changed’ Sourav sweats on day off
- Former captain rises to the demands of Greg Chappell School of Cricket
LOKENDRA PRATAP SAHI

Sourav Ganguly: ‘New’ approach
Johannesburg, Dec. 13: Believe it or not, Sourav Ganguly (once accused of not wanting to sweat it out) opted for nets on a day off for Team India. In fact, early this afternoon, the former captain had two sessions in the practice area at the Wanderers.

Keeping him company was Gautam Gambhir, who chose not to have a second hit. Both wanted an indoor session as well, but couldn’t as a bunch of youngsters were being taught the basics. Disturbing them wouldn’t have gone down well.

Well, eyes needn’t have been rubbed in disbelief as Sourav has changed. As a person, he has become reticent; as a cricketer, he’s slogging in the manner of 1996.

Clearly, the past 10 months in particular have made the 34-year-old realise that the Greg Chappell School is arguably the most demanding around and that the coach — whether you like him or not — wants a particular attitude.
Chappell, who hasn’t done anything since Sourav’s arrival (as a Test specialist) to remind the world that he didn’t want him in the dressing room for what seemed ages, cannot but be pleased with this “new” approach.

Sourav batted for at least 50 minutes, using a bat brought by an acquaintance from Calcutta, and encouraged the local bowlers to test him in the manner they could.

In between sessions, he was mobbed by schoolboys from the South-Western Districts, who wanted “Master Ganguly” to oblige with autographs.

“He’s such an attacking player... Meeting him has been a big moment,” remarked one who’d even got Sourav to sign his shirt which may now never be washed.

Thanks to his captaincy (and batting) in the 2003 World Cup, Sourav has a high following in South Africa. The sizeable Indian community, of course, reveres him — after icon No. 1 Sachin Tendulkar, that is.

Asked whether he felt emotional on turning up at the Wanderers for the first time since that final against Australia, almost four years ago, Sourav grinned and told The Telegraph: “In many ways, yes.... It feels nice.... It was a terrific tournament for us.”

The disappointment of losing, though, remains. It’s just that Sourav chose not to talk about it. This, after all, is the time to look ahead as the first of three Tests begins at the Wander-ers on Friday.

Sourav, by the way, bumped into Shaun Pollock as he was leaving the hotel for nets. “Ah, good to see you,” is how the former South African captain greeted him. “Good to see you, too” was the response.

In much the same breath, Sourav asked: “Why has (Nicky) Boje retired? Looks like this is the season for retirements (Damien Martyn quit last week).”

Pollock, a year younger than Sourav, laughed: “Yeah, so it appears.... It’s fine as long as we don’t join that list!”

Having made the mother of all comebacks, Sourav definitely has no such plans. As for Pollock, he was Man of the Series in the recent ODIs and is thoroughly enjoying the role of senior pro.

Incidentally, both were captains during India’s last tour of South Africa for a bilateral series, in late 2001. Much has happened since, but their respect and affection for each other hasn’t changed.

So it ought to be.

Are the highlighted sentences coming from the respective people being referred here or...is it the correspondent's take on the issue?

Chappell haters or SG haters can just stay off for the time being .....we will discuss at the end of this series :-X

We have all started learning from the media on how to make our posts draw attention  ;)

A better title would have been

"Pollock and Sourav decide to torment their captains...enter into a pact "not to retire"  :P

It is good if SG's attitude has changed. It is a welcome change.
As to his batting, this series and the Jan/Feb one in India should hold some answers.

Good if it all works out well in the end.

However spats and kiss-ups apart, I have no delusions abt WC-07...This team is DARN un-prepared for even reaching the semis/finals and the team mgmt has to take the blame for botching this one up.

He might have been always the same person - the only difference is that he has more time in his hand now - not having to deal with leadership role.

One has changed to be more commited to do necessary hard work.
The other has changed to keep quiet and get along despite other differences.

In all, its a good change from both sides.

i don't know if you you hate him or not but you aren't consistent in your assessment of various people and their actions.

I used to say ZK shud not be in the team.
But, I was strongly advocating ZK shud be getting in before ICCCT based on performance.
We may not agree on if one is performing or not. But for me:
1. Performance and 2. Attitude - combination shud be right for someone to get into 11/15.

Anyways, i guess this is in the agree to disagree vein. So...

JOHANNESBURG, Dec 13: As the sun beat down relentlessly on the Wanderers, and the rest of the Indian team chilled out in the hotel, one man braved the heat and loneliness to enjoy another long batting session here on Wednesday afternoon: Sourav Ganguly.

The former captain, who is on a comeback trail after almost nine months, came to the ground as per a pre-organised plan at sharp 11. He was accompanied by opener Gautam Gambhir and the ubiquitous team security chief.

Together, they spent close to 90 minutes as they tried to catch up for lost time; both are late entrants to the party, having been picked for the Test squad only after the One-day misadventure earlier.

Ganguly, sporting an electric blue bandana under the India helmet, looked determined as he faced a handful of young bowlers. They were surely not even half as quick as the South African pacers, but the boys made up with their enthusiasm.

They kept coming at him relentlessly, dishing out a variety of deliveries: slow, medium, fast, bouncy and wayward too. Ganguly enjoyed the half-volleys but made sure that he wasn’t contemptuous in his stroke-play. For his pleasure, there were two spinners, one leggie and one left-arm, and two lanky pacers.

The coach, a fat and pleasant local man, donned the role of Greg Chappell and watched him with eagle-eyes. He kept asking the boys to vary their line and length too; Lawrence Mahatlane was eventually ready with his two-bit advice when Ganguly took a water-break.

As Gambhir took charge of the bowlers, Ganguly came over to the umpire’s position and watched the proceedings carefully. Just as he was getting ready for another stint, a swarm of little players came rushing in to the ground. They were clearly excited as soon as they recognised him.

"It’s Ganguly, So-rav Ganguly," they hissed. "Where is Tendulkar? I really want to see him," said a kid.

As the buzz increased, Ganguly stepped forward to oblige their extended bats; he signed for each one of them but they were not happy: they wanted his autograph on their shirts and trousers too.

Ganguly offered them a smile and dozens of signs. One of them, a pesky little kid, asked him if he could spare a pair of batting gloves. "I will but after the matches," he remarked. "I need to bat in the Tests, you know." Another one was quick to shoot: "You take mine and give me yours."

"Why don’t you ask Tendulkar? He will surely give you one," he said. "He carries loads of them. Anyway, you come back to me after the match and I will give you," he promised to the youngest boy. The kids, having succeeded in their mission, went away cheerfully.

Ganguly expressed surprise to the handful of journalists at Nicky Boje’s sudden and unexpected retirement. He wanted to know who had come in place of him; then he enquired about the batting order. Fully armed with the knowledge, he went back for another quick session in the nets.

Eventually, as the boys fagged out, Ganguly and Gambhir decided to have a go in the indoor facilities. However, they had to abandon that plan as some other kids had already taken guard inside. Regretfully, they packed up their bags and went away.

Having made the mother of all comebacks, Sourav definitely has no such plans.

Shouldn't we wait at least till it happens ? Or the tour match is the criteria for comebacks ?

So u dont dislike GC based on any objective criteria?
Then why do u dislike him - becos u "feel" like it...what is the reason?
Or we dont need one!?

eh? i have stated enough number of time why i don't like him or his "pracess".  his style may appeal to some but not to me, EVEN IF IT YIELDS RESULTS. i am not even talking abou his slimy handling of SG here. you, sorry, "some of you", on the other hand, try to make it all sound like you are all "oh so virtuous" and have only the goodness of the team in mind and look up to GC as the one who had the guts to "bell the cat" and rid the team of all evil. at the same time, when i show that GC himself has been guilty of these so called "divisive" tactics, you turn a blind eye!

hope that clarifies, no, it wouldn't. so we will go round and round again....
