Yuvraj to play WC without ACL
« on: December 01, 2006, 08:42:20 PM »
Found the below info in a forum. Not sure if everyone is aware of this but I was specifically looking for this info.

Yuvraj has not opted for surgery after tearing his ACL. This decision is quite contraversial, as there are considerable change of direction demands in cricket and for optimal stability he really should have a reco.

The World Cup is only 4 months away though and I suppose this is the motivating factor behind conservative rehab. The recovery time for ACL reco is generally 6 months.

Battting blow for India
From correspondents in Mumbai, India

November 14, 2006 INJURED India batsman Yuvraj Singh has been ruled out of next month's the three-Test series in South Africa, and the home one-day series with West Indies and Sri Lanka early next year.

The knee injury that sidelined the middle-order batsman from the one-day leg of the tour, beginning on Sunday, is to be re-assessed after eight weeks, an India cricket board statement said overnight.

The 24-year-old left hander, who tore ligaments in his left knee playing on the eve of the Champions Trophy game with Australia last month, was examined by the board's orthopaedic surgeon Anant Joshi overnight.

"(The) plan is to follow a conservative rehab path (non-surgical) initially with constant ongoing reassessment to give Yuvraj the best chance to be available for the World Cup and the subsequent series to follow," the statement said.

The Punjab player, who has featured in 159 one-dayers and 19 Tests, has grown in stature as an aggressive batsman and superb point fielder.

He was nominated for the International Cricket Council one-day player of the year award which was won last week by Australia's Mike Hussey.

What is more important is for YS to consider his long term career options too. Is the WC big enough to risk losing the rest of one's career? Is it possible for him to perform at full throttle with this injury unattended? WHat I understand from the report is that the injury is not going to heal completely without surgery anyhow. IMO, he should just kiss the WC goodbye and look after his career.
Considering his age, there will be at least a couple of WC opportunities after this.

i dont know the authenticity of the report.

also dont know the extent of the tear in the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) YSs case, as well as other associated injuries common with ACL tears. in fact i am not even sure if he has a ACL tear.

considering he has, a quick note regarding current management:

even partial tears respond to surgery better than than conservative management in grade 1 activity individuals which YS is certainly one of.

there is no place for conservative management in ACL tears in athletes.
surgery is delayed for about three to four weeks (to avoid a certain complication - i am not going into details here) after which it is recommended to have surgery with a 82 to 95 % success rate and a 5-8 percent failure rate. early surgery is also recommended as delaying it causes higher failure rate.

a return to 60% power within 2 - 3 months and 80% power within 3-4 months is usual. these can be measured by machines and is relatively exact science. it is in general assumed that athletes can return to full training around 80% power in the muscles. there are documented instances of players going back to active american football at three months.

therefore if it is an ACL tear it would be foolish of YS not to undergo surgery and take a chance with his career. even after surgery he has a small chance of playing in the world cup.

other ligament injuries of course have completely different management issues.

Better that YS takes a long term approach. As things stand, not much thrill for Ind. folks in WC07.

flute202020, the title to your thread is inaccurate. it would be tough for yuvi to play without his ACL  8)
