Interesting ... to say the least ..

On a cricketing note .. I am willing to take bets on continued batting failure
for our team in tests ... inspite of VVS and SG inclusion.  RD,SRT (maybe) the only bright spots.
Our batsmen  are good for homely tracks only ..

Board 'forced' Sehwag demotion
CHANDRESH NARAYANAN|
TIMES NEWS NETWORK

MUMBAI, Nov 30: The decision to strip Virender Sehwag from the vice-captain's post may be seen as a tough selectorial message. But the truth is the selection panel led by Dilip Vengsarkar was 'forced' to take a call and appoint VVS Laxman in Sehwag's place after a directive from the BCCI.

It is learnt that the selectors had been told that a clear message had to be sent out to Sehwag owing to 'problems with his attitude'. The other player against whom the Board wanted a stern action was off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, again because of his attitude.

Sehwag put on notice

If the selectors had decided to take that extreme step, Delhi opener Aakash Chopra and Mumbai offie Ramesh Powar would have been the beneficiaries.

Action against Sehwag and Harbhajan had been 'pending' since the Champions Trophy. Senior board officials had been keeping a close watch on the duo, but delayed taking any action. Sehwag's bright 65 against Australia in the Champions Trophy and Harbhajan's consistent One-day bowling during 2006 had saved them the axe.
Why should performance be considered when there are other serious issues regarrding attitude and behaviour in a team? If the BCCI had trustworthy reports about this attitude problem, performance should never have been a critetria to delay action

The team think-tank had been wanting a pro-active vice-captain who was more involved. So far, Sehwag had been giving a 'satisfied look' and his general demeanour on the field had left several decision-makers dissatisfied.

No complaints were made but senior officials had noted that Sehwag needed to be reprimanded. Hence, Hyderabad touch artiste Laxman emerged as a compromise candidate for the vice-captaincy because of his seniority. The other major reason is that Sehwag losing the role is because he is 'not guaranteed' to play all three Tests.

If he fails in the first, Gautam Gambhir can well replace him.

However, stand-in skipper Sehwag was as nonchalant as ever about his batting form after another failure on Wednesday: "I don't think anything is going wrong with my batting. I have to spend some time at the crease. When you are chasing, you are always looking at the scoreboard and you try and play shots. "Sometimes you get out and at times you get runs."

But VS looked pretty involved during captaincy in the last ODI

Also I am hoping that VS who has always performed well in tests does the same again. Hope he scores a double century.

Ok, I'll be realistic- hope Team India scores a double century

Alright stating the facts now- hope they score a double century at least in 2 innings combined ;D

VS's ODI spot maybe in jeopardy -- but his test spot?! For God's sake he's India's best opener sicne Gavaskar in Test matches.

Exactly my point too- he has always scored more in tests than ODIs. Looks like he is in hot soup for something off- field

I agree but it looks like he wouldnt have been in a problem had it not been for his poor performances. The board, it seems, was waiting for a convenient time (instead of immediatly after his 65). As for tests and ODIs kept separate, it didnt seem a factor in Kaif;s case.

if you take his last 8 tests he has been scoring at an average of 32.
i know i am picking and choosing matches but may be the additional factor to whatever naughty thing he has done. i am personally not in favour of dropping him. not yet anyway.

Not only that there have been times he is the only one who scores in the team- remember against Pak; when VS used to get out batting was over for India. The field settings suit him better too in tests if he can survive the early spells

Sehwag in the line of fire

BOBILLI VIJAY KUMAR|
TIMES NEWS NETWORK

CAPE TOWN, Nov 28: Virender Sehwag is an enigma within a riddle. At the best of times, he is inscrutable, rarely showing any emotion on the field. Even if he has just completed a century, a double or even a triple, he only raises his hands, throws his head back, looks up with closed eyes and thanks the stars above him.

It almost feels like he is hardly surprised. When he gets out too, he merely nods his head and walks away as though nothing untoward has really happened. He is a supremely confident man, well aware of his prowess, abilities and dynamic talent.

Hope floats for team India
Another blow: Dravid out, Laxman in
Vengsarkar bats for Team India

So it was a little strange to watch his flay his bat in disappointment on Sunday and repeat the slice-shot as he returned to the pavilion. The truth is Viru is a man under siege. He has been going through a long and lean phase and luck seems to have sneaked out of his window.

More importantly, the vibes within the team are not exactly jumping with joy. India’s chief problems are starting at the top, and ending there. He needs to worry because a certain sections within the team are not too happy with his approach.

They are particularly displeased that he withdrew from the Durban game at virtually the last second. "We needed him to play there very badly," said a senior member of the Indian contingent. Sehwag was ready and willing to play in the first match at Johannesburg despite the stitches on his finger. So his decision to pull out just three days later has raised more than a few eyebrows.

"I have seen many players play with a lot more than just a tear in his hand," said the official, on condition of anonymity. "Look back and you will see batsmen with broken hands and smashed jaws step up for the team. If he wanted he could have played the match. Indeed the team management could have insisted and made him play. But then what is the point in forcing someone if he is not himself willing."

Captain Rahul Dravid too had insisted on the eve of the game that Viru was almost definitely going to play. Eventually he didn’t. Sehwag returned to take his place in the third ODI and made zero.

The team official then explained to TOI the conflict in Sehwag’s mind. "He has achieved everything that he wanted in life. He is a superstar in India. He has earned more fame, money and everything else that he would ever want. He needs to figure out if he wants anything more," he said.

"To succeed at this level you need hunger and ambition. At the moment Viru has lost it. He is like a boxer who has been knocked down. A part of his mind may want to get up and fight. But another part wants to stay down because it’s scared of another knock," he explained.

"It’s a question of hard work from here. Is he willing to do that, fight his way back. Or is he happy with what he has gained till now," the official said. He, however, had no doubt that Sehwag was a special talent. Sehwag, rather surprisingly, seems to be doing comfortably in Tests; it’s only in the One-dayers that he has hit a roadblock.

He alone can change it; and for that he has to let his mind take charge.Otherwise, he shall remain an enigma that shall torment Indian cricket for a long time.
