Banned Azharuddin feted as hero
« on: November 05, 2006, 01:51:38 AM »
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/cricket/other_international/india/6117228.stm

Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin has been feted as a hero at a ceremony attended by top officials of the International Cricket Council.
Azharuddin was banned from cricket for life for his role in the global match-fixing scandal six years ago.

But he was among a host of high profile players and officials lauded for their services to Indian cricket on Saturday.

The ceremony came hours after the ICC revoked a similar life ban on Pakistan bowler Ata-ur-Rehman.

Azharuddin's ban takes in all cricket activities - including playing, coaching or assuming an official position.

Now aged 43, Azharuddin led India at three World Cups, but was banished from the game for conspiring with illegal bookmakers to fix matches and player performances.

The scorer of 22 often majestic Test centuries said he had not yet appealed to the ICC for the ban to be revoked.

Several Indian board officials have, however, suggested he has already suffered enough.

Azharuddin watched both of the Champions Trophy semi-finals, in Mohali on Wednesday and Jaipur on Thursday, where he was spotted sitting in the VIP enclosure.

But the Board of Control for Cricket in India has refused to pay him the pension normally applicable to former international players.

Its only India that you can be the Chief Minister or Railway minister even if you were invloved in a 900 crore scam, or be feted as the Captain of the Cricket team even if you had sold your country and  betrayed the fans who were ready to die for you..

I have mixed feelings about this. On one side of things, one could say that Azhar has been punished long enough. His international career is over. So why deny him the right to make a livelihood? On the other hand, I think honoring the man goes a bit too far. He is a sell out. Why should he be celebrated? I don't have any problem if he has a cricket academy and coaches kids. I don't even care if he becomes player/manager/coach of Hyderabad's Ranji team. He has something to offer there. But he should not be anywhere close to the international game, even as a commentator.  I can only imagine how guys like Ganguly, SRT, VVS and Dravid would feel when running into this guy.

its not only india mate.
there are cricketers playing currently for other countries who are guilty as well. they have been covered up so we can carry on with them. i am at no point justifying azhar, far from it, but others from SA PAK AUS carry on playing while you banish another is not done. i am not so clear about the political scams in india but am aware that the very person you are talking about has been probably the best railway minister ever for india.
if you want indians to suffer more than others for similar crimes it is up to you - i wont argue with that. what they did was unpardonable. only some are more equal than others.

Why Azar's case was different and severe was because he was captain .If you compare other countries  even Hansie Cronie was punished sverely and banned because he was captain .

You have missed out...you can bomb the financial capital of the nation and yet contest elections and aspire to be a MP and there will be political parties that can actually support you!!!! ::)

yes right so he can fix ranji matches as well now...Oh come on anyone who says he has served his ban long enough should see the punishment that has been handed out to Saddam.

Incidentally the crime is the same "treason"
