what did i tell you  ;D ;D
no chance of chasing, even from a decent position. first, they messed up the batting order, sending in Afridi at 5. 2nd Bond is a good death bowler, and Vettori has still kept it good enough despite bowling with dew

cricinfo says
Sri Lanka are officially out of the tournament now, thanks to net run-rate. If New Zealand win, they are through, while India and Pakistan will have to shoot out for the last qualifying spot

I hope he meant SA ....

Well replace Pak with Aus, NZ with WI and SL with Eng, and that statement will hold true tomorrow as well  :D

NZ are through.
Pak vs SA is a quarterfinal (both are on 2 points with 1 game to play)

our group has waaaaayyyyy too many possibilities to list. but i will try.

IF India wins tomorrow:
-our net runrate goes up
-Australia will need to thrash us according to net runrate. Assume we win a close match vs WI tomorrow. our net RR goes to 1.8. Australia's is 0.5. If we bat first, australia will need to chase it in less overs. If we make 200, Australia will need to get it in around 37 overs.
-In this scenario I would put Australia in to bat. If Australia make 300, we will need to get 235 or so to go through.
-This is all assuming England lose to WI. If England win against WI...
-England and WI and India and Aus all have 2 points! India vs Aus will become a fight for 1st place in the group. The other 3 teams will be sorted based on  net     RR.

IF India loses tomorrow:
-WI has 4 points and are through.
-India vs Aus becomes a quarterfinal.

So lets just win tomorrow!!! An emphatic victory will be  a plus putting even more pressure on Aussies plus it'll be a great headline on main page if Aussies don't even make the semis ;D ;D ;D ;D

No, we don't want an emphatic victory tomorrow, just a victory by a narrow margin :)  You see, if eliminating Australia is the goal, we need to ensure we do not hurt WI's NRR too much, allowing them to surpass Australia with a crushing victory over England.  As it is, we are already far ahead on NRR and cannot realistically be caught.

why not just beat WI and Aus both emphatically  ;D
WI has the advantage of an extra game in hand - let them figure it out themselves  ;D

Nah, if we are in a chase tomorrow and in a comfortable position with wickets in hand, I would prefer the guys take it till the end and achieve the target with just an over or 2 to spare, as opposed to accelerating and hurting the WI NRR.  Doing so would really put severe pressure on Australia in the final encounter to not just beat us, but beat us by a good margin, provided WI beat Eng by a good margin.

i think you are reading this wrong. us playing slow and not hurting WI's NRR would be silly. if you do a quick calculation, a net runrate difference of 1.2 is not impossible to catch up. rather than worry about who comes with us to the final, the nature of this knockout means look out for yourself - it aint over till its over.
WI's net RR is on 0.2 and Australia's is 0.5, ours is 1.7
assuming a close victory tomorrow, if aussies thrash us and WI thrash england, we could find ourselves sitting out! a quick look at some of the one-sided matches in this tournament is proof that this is a real possibility.
this is a moot point if we lose tomorrow.

anyways, after seeing the SA vs SL match at Ahmedabad, I would like India to bat first. The new ball was swinging and seaming like crazy under lights. Seam more than swing actually. Munaf will be good to watch in those conditions. And there was not much dew at all till the 30th over.

Well, if we win marginally against the WI, then the WI NRR will go down further.  I believe our NRR is 1.77 right now and while it would be possible for Aus to make up a margin of 1.2 by thrashing us, I don't think the WI could really make up an even larger margin (maybe .4 more) in just a solitary game.  But yeah, I guess the safer way to go is beating the WI convincingly and then trying to thrash the Aussies (the likelihood of that happening is far slimmer).

Interestingly, if we do keep the WI in the hunt, would that in a weird way give us a better chance of beating the Aussies since they will be worried about beating us by a convincing margin, say chasing in 43 overs, instead of 50?

All too many unnecessary permutations-- I'll take a victory tomorrow any which way it comes.

amen to that. since we've all got wishlists - beat WI tomorrow and then ask Houdini to conjure up some rain for the Aus match  ;D ;D ;D. Aus stranded on 3 points, WI beats England, the universe is in balance. Just imagine Ponting's face!

Better yet-- let us anhilate the WI and Aus, and have Eng anhilate the WI!  That way Eng makes it to the semis with us!

And wht if both us and England beat WI convincingly (huge huge victories) and we beat Aus also convincingly- can England  also squeeze through leaving Aus and WI looking at each other with WTF expressions??

I would prefer that India thrash WI, Eng narrowly beat WI and Ind narrowly beat Aus, so that India finish #1 and Aus finish #2. Then we thrash Aus in the Ch Trophy finals to take home the cup  [god] [god].
