Kaif best runner in the Indian team: Dravid

New Delhi, Oct 10: Even after the influx of a lot of young blood in the side, Mohammad Kaif was still the best runner between the wickets in the Indian team, captain Rahul Dravid said today.

"Kaif is the best runner between the wickets in the team," Dravid said.

"There is a shuttle run called the beep test in our fitness drill and Kaif regularly comes out on top," the Karnataka batsman said.

When asked who was the worst runner between the wickets in the team, 'The Wall' jokingly said "all the rest of us." Dravid was speaking at a lead-up event for the Delhi Half Marathon to be held on October 15.

He expressed regret that he had not been able to participate in the event thus far due to his tight cricket schedule.

Dravid was playing in the 'Super Test' between Australia and the Rest of the World during last year's race and would be leading India in their Champions Trophy opener against England in Jaipur on the day of the race this time around.

He said he would try to participate in the event next year, but stopped short of making any assurances for the rest of the team.

"I cannot make any assurances for the other players, but I will try and come," the skipper said.

"But we have no chance of winning the race," he conceded.

Dravid said such events showcase Delhi and also raise money for several worthy causes.

"The way this event brings a lot of smiles on the faces of a lot of people is absolutely fantastic," he added.

Well, this answers the debate Dhruv and I were having in the chat one time.  We were discussing who the fastest runner in between the wickets was and I believe the debate came down to Dhoni and Kaif.  I thought it was Kaif and recalled prior reports on the shuttle runs in practice.  Apparently, it is not even that close, which is a little surprising.  I would have thought Raina would be pushing pretty close.  One person out of the side that is extremely quick is Dinesh Karthik-- wonder where he would finish.

Beep test has to do with endurance...it forces you to speed up as you move from one level to the next. Dinesh Karthik maybe the quickest but he may not have the endurance Kaif has to do it for long periods.

There are more aspects to the beep test than just the shuttle run, I think.  The shuttle run is specifically back and forth sprinting, similar to running in between the wickets.

There are very few people who can actually complete the test (23 levels). Dwight Yorke and David Beckham have done it. I think Lance Armstrong is another person who has.

Ok Kaif might be the fastest. But the best would be Sehwag and Ramesh Powar. Running between the wkts would be a treat to watch.
