Feedback on main page
« on: October 09, 2006, 03:07:52 AM »
Guys and Gals,

Not sure if you have noticed or not but in the last few days the main page has been revived and the current plan is to continue the updates, articles and make even further improvements.

I do want to take a minute and say that it does take some time to do so and it will be nice to have some feedback and thots of members on these attempts. It will be helpful to actually get a thought/suggestion vs just a praise for the effort or outright criticism.

The vision was that before any major visual or layout changes take place,

- the page should be mantained current
- provide a platform for new visitors to see only cricket related stuff at the onset
- have follow up discussions from current hot topics or nostalgic memories from some old matches

I am trying to put some more changes specially with the upcoming cricket matches but this will need even more effort and time.

So at this time, it will be useful to know whether

a) the initial vision sounds meaningful or not and do the members think the changes are good/bad/don't care/don't visit main page??

b) Is the idea of increasing the use of main page for upcoming Champions trophy supported/ sounds interesting but don't know/against the idea/don't care?? The idea is to have more updates, match reports, different POVs at main page followed by discussions on the forum

Please post your thoughts here.

Disclaimer: Banter is not discouraged on this thread if accompanied with posts of meaningful suggestions  ;)

Suraj , great work on the main page.

This is probably a UI concern but wish all you guys would stick to a common font while submitting the articles . Its pretty jarring to see multiple fonts of multiple sizes on the main page. On that note, I would love to give a hand to whoever is redesigning the page if they want. [I've freelanced a while as a logo-designer and web-developer]

Also, it would really really be helpful if all the articles are thoroughly spell-checked before being posted on the main page.

Have updated my bookmarks to point to the main page rather than direct to the forum . :)

kingcool,

Thanks for the suggestions and also the bookmark update.

- The font and spell check issues should get better rapidly IMO; this was a new process (oh that word again ;D) for some us and I anticipate quick improvement as familarity with the main page posting grows. I will also work with Dex further on this too.

- Achutank is our graphic expert as far as I know so maybe the two of you can work on some cyber-Hussain touch

Cant a CSS be used so that irrespective of the font used to submit an article it would be uniform on the page ?

i find the use of tech-speak impolite. please use language that we can all understand.

meaningful part:

suraj, appreciate your effort in making the main page more vibrant. it would be nice to have some regular columns there focusing on certain aspects. as for the match reports etc. i guess the real attraction would be the discussion that follows it and maybe add a link from there to the DG?

Mock,

Thx for taking it up for non-techies (BTW- wud sg's post be considered vernacular?); I tell you these techies >:( ;D

- Regular columns focussed on certain aspects are part of the plan besides other things

- The real attraction is absolutely follow up discussion with main page just serving as the starting point: BTW I want to make sure you and everyone else knows that there is a link from all posts on the main page for follow up discussions even now

For match reports: Someone watching live and providing a report of not only the scoring but the incidents and perceptions seems more meaningful and then others who watch can support or contradict+ non-viewers can also chip in on the follow up discussion

For previews and observations: Having different POVs with even "guest" authors can start a discussion

Like I said some of this involves more coordination and work so it was important to know the interest level of regulars (banters and non-banters ;D) and those non-regulars who want the pure cricket posts

You have done great work on the front page. No doubt. Applause.

Having said that, I bookmark the DG Forum, and visit the main page only once in a while.
So, whenever you cross reference the posts in the DG Forum, then I go and read the main page.

So based on fineleg's post (and I think many others do the same)-

1. do you think that will change if the main page has more updates and interesting stuff- the main page links to the forum anyway

2. do the new users come to main page or forum??

Dex will have to figure out some of these to work out the best cross-linking method (if the main page is useful at all)

Dex and Blwe will probably be able to throw more light on the technical limitations

Easiest way to do this -- considering we are using a software content generator -- is to just all use the same font and size.

Isnt there a way to get at the bare metal of the DG software ?

thing is that i can and have edited a lot of scripts as far as the overall text goes--but because this is being input from the user and also, the editor ive instaleld seperately...it has to be specified. it is possible that theres a chunk of code that can override that stuff, but ive yet to find it.

are you familiar with coding?

Yes. Look at the code responsible for putting stuff on the main page. And see if you can attach a CSS to the main page html template so that irrespective of the fonts used by the posters, the posts are uniform. Alternatively, get the editor to spit out the contents using a standard template.

suraj and others

great work guys on the main page.

one of my concerns was the different fonts which is being addressed now. i also feel that the older ones should be moved away and kept as and archive link on the main page itself so people can read durther if they want to.
i also feel the newcomers first port of call would be the main page.

Suraj/Sahir and others..
Main page looks good. As mentioned by others - consistent font would help.
