Sania falling apart in the 2nd set after winning the 1st 7-5. She was up 4-1 and 2 breaks, but then went down 4-5 before reeling off 3 games to win the 1st set. Now she's down 2 breaks, 4-0 in 2nd set  :( :( :(

All the norm for Sania; as streaky a player as there is out there, both up and down.

She was smokin' in that outfit.  A slightly new, very becoming hairdo as well, I think.  She had a little black mini-overcoat that she took off prior to play as well.  The whole package worked... :P :P :P

We are just good friends: Roddick and Sharapova

By Larry Fine

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Andy Roddick was not in party mood after marking his 24th birthday with victory at the U.S. Open, trying to put to rest rumors he is romantically linked with Russian Maria Sharapova.

"We're not dating," he told reporters after his 6-3 7-6 6-3 win over Danish qualifier Kristian Pless.

"I've said it a million times already, but you guys refuse to write it. You know, we're friendly. We're in the same places. I think she's a great girl. You know, we'll talk. That's about it."

Roddick, the 2003 U.S. Open champion and former world number one, said life on the tennis tour made relationships difficult to manage.

"It's a little bit of a stretch when we both travel. She's actually busier than I am. That's a little bit of a stretch. But, you know, I think she's great. I can't say enough nice things about her," he said.

Sharapova, who beat Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands 6-3 6-0 on Wednesday, was also quizzed by reporters about Roddick.

"You know what, I really don't talk about my personal life," she said. "When two tennis players know each other and are friends, and are known around the world, there's people are gonna talk. That's exactly what's happening."

That's right.  Unless a guy is gay, nobody wants to be "just friends" with Maria.

Yeah-- Djokovic is a really good young player and Fish remains an enigma, capable of top 10 play one day and outside top 100 play the next.  Interesting sidenote-- I played Mardy at a national tournament in Kalamazoo, Michigan back in high school.

I think Sharapova got offended because I was starting to prefer Nicole Vaidisova (who btw, also looked quite stunning yesterday) to her. Sharapova is back with a bang  :P

For anyone intereseted, at usopen.org, there is a video segment called "Off the court spotlight: Sania Mirza"  (I think the volume on the player is down by default; so turn it up)
Unfortunately, the idiot Taylor keeps mispronouncing her name.

So I got to saw about half a dozen games of Fish vs Djokovic as the network kept switching between that and Williams/Hantuchova which was a decent match, Sharapova/Loit and eventually switched to Mauresmo/Shaughnessy at which time I gave up and left to do more work.

I am not sure why there is constant switching between matches, but one thing that annoyed me was their insistence to showing games from the Sharapova/Loit match. Here are some stats from the first set.

                        Sharapova       Loit
Unforced Errors          2               6
Total Points Won       24              3

Now I know that Sharapova is a great draw. But when she is creaming her opponents in a match like this, how about showing a replay at 11:00 so everyone can drool over her. I mean, they can't be interested in watching the tennis here, can they?

Loit made only 6 unforced errors and she still won only 3 points in the 1st set - 2 of them through Sharapova own unforced errors. She had 0 winners. She won 20 points in the whole match. It was a pathetic match-up but they kept breaking away from the Fish/Djokovic game to show bits of that match.

Usually the excuse is that the people here prefer to watch Americans play, but Fish is American and this match probably had some decent tennis - definitely way better than the standard of the Sharapova/Loit match.

Like I've argued before, women's tennis has simply become more popular in the US-- it consistently gets higher ratings.  So all the women are wathcing Sharapova and a bunch of the guys are as well.  Horrendous for a true tennis lover though.

I have a better idea. Show a replay of the game, in slow motion and with all cameras focused only on Maria  :P

I agree entirely with you about women's tennis being more popular in the U.S and all that. But this match?? And my main issue was that they kept switching when there was a thrilling encounter that demanded telecast at that time. Well...whatever. I am happy I got to watch Andre and Baghdatis.

No, totally agree with you-- I would want them to stick to the Fish match as well, but the networks are all ratings whores.  What would be ideal is the way they have it in the UK.  The red interactive button on the remote allows you to choose what court you want to watch.  You usually have a choice of about 4 or 5.
