So, suraj - how was Maria Sharapova - LIVE and UP CLOSE  :D :D

Man I will be banned for a few days if I really post what was happening to me watching Maria so close. I was scared I'll be removed from the court because my drool on the court caused her to slip a few times in the second set ( explains why she lost in the second!) if anyone is interested here's my report on my day at the open:

When I entered, Jelena was dominating Henin-Hardenne and 100% of the crowd was supporting the underdog. For my selfish reason of wanting the match to go to 3 sets I started yelling " go Henin" and got a lot of angry stares which grew into threatening stares as the tide started to turn. I think the turning point of the match was when Jelena got angry over a call on her own serve and let it get to her. From that point, her serve was broken and Henin never looked back. Of course the crowd jumped on the Henin-Hardenne bandwagon in the 3rd set but I really believe Henin needs to split some of her earnings with me for the support in the down time. Payment in cash or kind will be accepted.

Of course all this was a distant memory as soon as Maria entered the court- she is hot and determined to win. The match was way below expectations as everyone expected Mauresmo to do better than this. The crowd support was divided and there was big pack of lesbians cheering "Amelie, Amelie" but somehow Amelie never took off. After Maria's blistering forehand shots and powerful serves, I realized this one will not be much of a contest so trained my eyes and binoculars on MS instead fo rthe remainder of the match- it was worth the trip to Arthur Ashe.

On a personal note I will like to add that it is my belief that one of the balls that MS threw in our section after the match was intended for yours truly and I also believed she had scribbled a no. on it before hitting it. Unfortunately her aim was not on the mark and for me the disappointment on her face was too obvious as she saw someone else catching the ball. Well we'll meet again soon my lady in black!

No poondu- I think her career is important right now, I don't want her to lose focus. Infact, I moved away from her line of sight after her seond set so she could re-focus

For FL and others' benefit,

MS' dad Yuri gives signals during the matches eg picks up a drink and then MS drinks, eats a banana indicating it is time to eat a banana and she follows. it is rather silly. This prompted sahir's comment- I won't even go into the hidden meaning to keep FL's life simple.

At US open presenattion ceremony Yuri was busy talking on cell phone when MS brought him up in acceptance speech and spotlight was on him leading to my comment. Again the relation to climax best left out for FL's benefit

Its really silly- other annoying things abt MS are her really loud grunts and the delay between her serves with the obsessive gestures (hands through each side of her hair etc).

But then all is forgiven when she showed her youthful exuberance and pure joy after winning. For those who missed it was a moment to treasure- for once the hot looks and great tennis player was replaced by the 19 yr old that she is- infact she broke the trophy as the top part fell of when she lifted it.

I saw that part where she jumped and the lid of the trophy fell off (also saw parts of the match).

She does *grunt loud* much like Monica Seles! Wonder if AR is ok with such loud noises! I think it may be disconcerting!

Paes doing a SreeSanth

Damm and Paes Crowned Men's Doubles Champs
by Erin Gell
Saturday, September 9, 2006

The 6th seeded doubles team of Leander Paes and Martin Damm rebounded from a set down Saturday to upset second-seeded Max Mirnyi and Jonas Bjorkman in the final. With a score of 6-7, 6-4, 6-3, they triumphed for their first US Open Championship.

The lengthy opening set was a power struggle that stayed on serve to force a tiebreak. Even then, Bjorkman and Mirnyi just barely slid by 7-6 (5).

The 6’5” Mirnyi, nicknamed “the beast,” used his enormous reach to take care of some high overhead shots. While across the net, Paes clinched numerous points by poaching.

Both teams were equally fierce on their serves, but Bjorkman and Mirnyi’s 15 unforced errors and 9 double faults would cost them. In the second set, the gap started to widen.

The expressive Paes, who was slamming down his racket in frustration in the first set, now pumped his fist, initiated chest pumps with Damm, and performed erratic dance moves as the two nudged their way ahead in the second set.

Fans on their way out of the Roddick/Youzhny semifinal filed into Louis Armstrong Stadium as the third set got underway. Both teams fought it out until Paes and Damm, up 4-3, managed to snatch a break to serve for the match. When Damm pounded back an overhead for a sideline winner to secure the title, a jubilant Paes bounded into his arms.

But Damm couldn’t pop the champagne just yet. He actually has a second final to play in Saturday tonight – the mixed doubles championship against Martina Navratilova and Bob Bryan.

Damm and partner Kveta Peschke will take center stage in Arthur Ashe Stadium following the women’s singles fina

A month before her 50th birthday, Martina Navratilova retires in grand style by winning the US Open mixed doubles championship, partnering Bob Bryan.  This is her 11th mixed doubles Grand Slam title, to go along with 32 women's grand slam doubles titles, making a total of 43 grand slam doubles titles.  Adding he 18 grand slam singles titles to the mix, she has now won 51 Grand Slams in singles and doubles combined.  I think this is a record we can safely say will never be broken.  The numbers all seem surreal...

Actually Sahir, ur numbers add up to 61 not 51. BBC says it is 59 overall for Martina.

Navratilova wins 59th Grand Slam

Navratilova soaks up the adulation of the New York crowd
Martina Navratilova ended her career in style with an amazing 59th Grand Slam title as she and Bob Bryan won the mixed doubles title at the US Open.
Navratilova, 49, went into Flushing Meadows saying it would be her last event as a professional player.

And she got the perfect send-off as she teamed up with Bryan to beat Czech pair Kveta Peschke and Martin Damm 6-2 6-3.

Navratilova won four US Open singles titles and a total of 18 Grand Slam singles titles during her career.

This victory also made her the oldest US Open mixed doubles champion.

"I just wanted to keep inspiring people, the way they inspired me. I wanted to show people you can do great things regardless of your age if you believe and go for it.

"Tennis has given me such a great life but I'm ready to move on. I'll stay in the game and refocus my efforts elsewhere."

btw, I miscounted her mixed doubles grand slams-- this was number 10, not 11.  Therefore, that brings my count down to 60, but I would still trust the BBC at 59.

Sahir,
BBC makes a lot of mistakes these days. The one I remember is Shanthakumaran Sreesanth is written as Sree Sreesanth . I found this in a number of articles .

I say  - no greater joy then having 'em FIGHT on the tennis court! Nothing more interesting than watching a nailbiter 'just for kicks'

(Exception when India is playing cricket, I'd like the clinical precision wins)

Speaking of Federer, I believe I mentioned this in the chat, but will go ahead and repeat myself-- what I would really like to see him attempt to do to truly show his greatness is try and win the Davis Cup for Switzerland.  I think Federer needs to not worry so much about tournaments other than the slams, end of year masters, and a few preparatory tournaments before those events for a year or two.  Instead, if he tried to play consistently in the Davis Cup, Switzerland could win.  The Swiss have another male player named Stanislas Wawrinka who is ranked around 38 in the world.  Additionally, they have a quite highly ranked doubles player as well in Yves Allegro.  If Federer could consistently win both his singles matches, Switzerland would have a great opportunity at beating anyone with either Wawrinka having to win one of two singles matches or Federer and Allegro winning their doubles match.  Furthermore, Federer could also team up with Martina Hingis in the Hopman Cup, although that is not as necessary since he has already won it once teaming up with Hingis in 2001.  However, Switzerland is yet to ever win or reach the finals of the Davis Cup.  The beauty with Federer in the Davis Cup at home is that they can always choose the opponents' weakest surface without having to think about their own strengths because Federer can play at a very high level on all surfaces.

If I were him I would focus on the French Open for now. I think Davis Cup scheduling can always make it tricky for him to commit to the team.

Well, the Davis Cup might work out well then because I can see a few teams getting their clay courts in order if the Swiss team includes Roger.
I wish for the day when he gets past Nadal in the French Open.
