I'm not upset we lost says Chappell
   By: Debasish Datta
   February 2, 2006

Karachi: After India meekly surrendered the series to Pakistan on the fourth day of the final Test yesterday, coach Greg Chappell said, “I’m not upset we lost today. It happens.”
Surprising words, considering the 341-run defeat was India’s second-worst loss ever to Pakistan.

Chappell, however, admitted, “I did not think the game would be over on the fourth day.” He conceded it was a huge defeat, but added, “We have to take it sportingly.”

Chappell refused to attach too much importance to the defeat. “We lost a game. At the end of the day, it’s a fight between bat and ball. Pakistan played better than us. We have to accept it,” he said.

He denied that this defeat would have an adverse effect on India’s forthcoming one-day campaign against Pakistan.

“I don’t think this will have an effect on the one-day series. We’ve to think in a different manner. That will be a fresh challenge,” he said.

February 1 panvati

Chappell would probably want February 1 removed from the calendar.

Exactly 25 years ago, he ordered his brother Trevor to bowl underarm to New Zealand’s Brian Kechnie to ensure the Kiwi did not hit a last-ball six to win a one-dayer. Chappell won that match as captain, but his unsporting decision drew widespread condemnation.

If he really means that the defeat doesnt upset him, it is time to leave. I am pretty sure everyone in the team is really depressed. I cannot shed my long face yet, so much so that my wife wondered if I would be as affected if she gets ill.
Seriously, I hate test defeats much more than ODI defeats. After the kind of time you put into watching 30 hours (or at least 24hrs) of cricket, opting to sleep a measly 2 hrs a day and then act like a zombie at work, it hurts. It really does.

PS: I remember Steve Waugh saying that he wouldnt trade the ODI series victory in 2001 for the test victory. Yeah, whatever mate.

I'm sure he may be upset, but now would be a terrible time to show it, with the ODIs coming up so soon.  The time to reflect is after the tour, not during it.  Try and stay focused on the task at hand, otherwise things will really go to the pot.  Unfortunately, I suspect that's the way they may be headed in the ODI series.  It really is a good thing we have some fresh faces coming for the ODI tour, ones that will not really be scarred by this defeat.  Maybe they can help lift our players' spirits.

Thank God there arent people like me in the team. Else guys like Kaif and Raina would have been in tears by now. BTW, have those guys arrived yet?

Has anyone done the prediction of team rankings with different possible results? Does India stand a chance of being dislodged from the No2 spot? Not that it matters. If we are handed a heavy defeat, how could we still call ourselves the 2nd best side.

Toney-- we were the number 2 Test side, not the number 2 ODI side.  And we are no longer the number 2 Test side either; down to 3.  In ODIs, we are currently fifth while Pakistan is third.  If we beat them 4-1, we can switch places with them.  If we beat them 3-2, we will likely move up to 4th.  If we lose, we'll likely drop down to 6th.

sahir, does any of that depend on the tri series down under? I think SL are still pretty close to us, right?
