« on: August 22, 2006, 04:58:19 PM »
For comments, guesses, answers etc.

Using search engines, CricInfo = Lame
Using your father's generation's assistance = Acceptable
Getting your father or his friends to join Cricket Voice = Priceless

Level of Difficulty: 8/10

1. Who were the first 2 Indian cricketers to be awarded the Padma Shri?

2. Who was the first Indian cricketer to be awarded the Arjuna Award?

3. Which Indian cricketer's career was tragically cut short due to politics after just 3 tests -this after he scored a century and averaged more than 60.
Extra Points: It is strongly rumored that he was asked which of two rival captains side he preferred being on and his answer sealed his fate. What was his classic reply?

4. Which Indian born cricketer served as a top diplomat?
Extra Points: which country was he posted to?

5. This former Indian captain died of a heart attack at just 42, on his son's 11th birthday. His son too later represented India as a test cricketer. Who was he?
Extra Points: under what circumstances did he have the heart attack?

6. Sadly, this former test cricketer is listed as "Missing, presumed dead". He walked out of his house in (then) Madras and was never seen since. Who was he?
Extra Points: what other sport did he represent India in internationally?

7. The Ranji Tropy was so named and donated by the Maharaja of Patiala. Competition for a benefactor was intense, and he just about pipped his rival's bid of a golden trophy. Who was his rival?
Extra Points: what was the proposed name of the trophy in the alternate proposal?

8. This Indian test bowler fell from a tree as a child and broke his arm badly. Consequently, he had a very odd bowling action that was questioned for legality through his career. Who was this?

9. This Indian cricketer is the only person to have got Don Bradman out hit wicket in his career. Who was this?

10. Sunil Gavaskar's son Rohan, was named after Rohan Kanhai whom his father greatly admired. At birth, he was given a middle name that was hybridized from the names of two other cricketers that his father admired. (The middle name was eventually dropped, in preference for Sunil). Which two cricketers were these?

Regarding 5, I just made a correction. He died when he was almost 42, not 52.

Here's one more trivia question. Nothing to do with Indian cricket.

This cricketer's surname is better known than any other cricketer's, save perhaps Bradman. He distinguished himself playing county cricket and would have certainly played for England had he not been killed during World War I. His first name was Percy. What was his last name, and how did he become that famous?

Thanks - but sadly I don't live anywhere close. I am currently holed up in a small town in the Mid west. My moniker is because I visited KoP once and have fond memories. I purchased a larger than life sized stuffed bear (which was an advt item, not really or sale) from a candy shop there. This was way before 9-11. I requested to carry it in the cabin on the flight back; the flight attendent obliged, sat it on the seat like an oversized passenger with a seat-belt and folks either thought I was a big baby or I was crazy. Don't ask me why I bought it, but almost 10 years later my son admires it. He is the King of Prussia  ;D

The best part of the stumping was...Sen gave two prior warnings to the Don ( that he was stepping out). Don, at his imperious best chose to ignore his warnings and ineveitably got stumped the 3rd time.
