Mr. Murthy is a legend in every sense of it.  He will go down as one of the great ever men in Indian History IMO.

the man is amazing. worth billions and lives in a 2 bedroom apartment, cleans his own house. my father got a chance to meet with him personally a year back. Mr. Murthy contributes to and runs literally 100s of charities all over India. they are all kept anonymous.

and what great principles. following strictly the Infy rules - retire at 60. He is the chairman - he can do what he likes. But he chooses instead to follow the rules that he himself made.

At the risk of stereotyping, such simplicity cannot come from North Indians- an average middle class Delhiite will attempt to flaunt his status more than this brilliant man

Not really pfsr. Slightly off the wall comment that I made but just based on the observation that there is a lot of show-off attitude in North vs South. And Narayan Murthy's simplicity prolly can't be replicated in NI

or it's just that there are a lot more richer north indians? or maybe we don't consider a 1 lac dhoti with pure gold work in the border "a' la mode"

While there is nothing wrong with fluanting one's well earned wealth, i suppose it is more the individual's idea of "good life". NM prob is very satisfied with his 2 bedroom place. IT is more to do with an individual's simplicity and selfless generosity as opposed to SI vs NI. I mean, SI is the land of multi crore marriages that stop entire metros , and the land of 1000 shoes :D

Suraj,
What is the point in this? I know Marwari businessmen who are VERY rich (by my standards, not Murthy's) who live like a poor person. I know that Lal Bahadur Shastri came from the North. I heard that Vajpayee lived modestly. The CM of WB lives modestly. I know of an NBA athlete (admittedly not great or famous) who earned close to a mil per year (will earn more than a mil this year) and takes public transport because he does not have a car.

Unless you provably know every North Indian in India, your statement "such simplicity cannot come from North Indians" is just not acceptable.

DY, pfsr, sgusa

On second thots, I do agree with you guys - maybe growing up in Delhi and watching the sickness of the show-off that goes on there made me biased against the Noth indian flaunting. And then my association in US with most South indian friends led me to believe that they do retain their simplicity to a greater extent.

Well I was not making any huge pjhilosphical statement but I take it back; simplicity and flamboyance exists in all spheres and sections of society.

That's because the guy is a freaking MISER..he just knows how to hoard money, not spend it.  ;D ;D

Just kidding.

I agree with you ..there are plenty of well-to-do North Indians I know who live very modest, and a lot of times charitable lives. I think it comes down to the individual and where the individual gets his/her "kicks". Some get it by "flaunting wealth", some by "building world class organizations", some by doing both..to each his own.
