the music thread
« on: August 02, 2006, 11:13:10 PM »
something i personally do is judge people by their taste in music. on the dg we discuss a variety of topics, but until we haven't really discussed music (except if you consider a moan in bed music). so what kind of stuff do you listen to

i will do the honors first. i have a very contrasting taste in music.
one of my favorite genre is what people call white trash, which isn't really true because i don't listen to stuff like aerosmith or any of these 48 hour long marriage artists. i listen to green day, system of a down (awesome nu metal band very political with their lyrics), bryan adams, pink floyd, guns n roses. i also to gore music - death metal bands like my dying bride, anorexia nervosa, cannibal corpses

i dont really know my classical indian music but i listen to it because a person very close to me is a classical singer. the weirdest concert i have been to is a pandit jesuraj concert, the concert was just amazing but quite a lot of listeners were talking about a storm like effect they felt with his music. religious music is also quite good, i think isckon churns out the best stuff but i dont really believe in their ideas (that krishna is above all gods, in fact they even completely do away with the hindu belief of 3 supreme gods)

bollywood i dont think i like a lot of stuff apart from a.r.rehman of course. a r rehman to me is the god of indian music. the effect his patriotic songs have. an album whic i thought was really good but didn't get as much critical/audience attention is netaji.

being the paki that i am haha, gotta love my paki music. come on lets admit it, their pop music is a lot better than our ours. bands like junoon, jaal and artists are nusrat fateh ali khan, rahet fateh ali khan, fuzon are some that i listen to

I have rather distributed interests. I might start the day with Suprabatham or mozart, proceed to Gnarles Barkley or 50cent, and end the day on Jazz or table. I guess i pretty much listen to most genres. I listen to Guns n Roses as well as Timberlake. :D

Quite frankly, since early 90s I have not followed the pop music scene.. I am an oldie.

In the late 80s/early 90s - the favs were .. Depeche Mode, New Order, Fine Young Cannibals, Ministry [the techno rock stuff, I suppose]..and of course, the usual - Pink Floyd, Genesis/Phil Collins, Police, U2..

Desi music .. besides Ghazals, old Kishore Kumar (practically anything he sang) and Rafi(some of what he sang)..and of course, AR Rahman and recent good movies' soundtracks.

No fan of any classical. I am not sure if I will get killed when I say this - but Indian classical is a bit too disorganized for my taste.

Of course, we do play Bhajans, VS and Suprabhatam once in a while.

i listen to a lot and i mean a LOT of oldies, especially english music
these days i have been slowly listening to less english music and more n more indian stuff:
some favorite bands: mr. big, duran duran, greenday, enya, fleetwood mac, lobo, oasis, u2, simon and garfunkel

i have a huge assortment of other random english songs, quite a few oldies, which i am proud of

then i have a HUGE number of fav hindi singers. love tamil songs too - i feel music in tamil is even more beautiful than hindi.
dunno where to start: of course i LOVE Euphoria, one of the best bands to come out of india. shankar mahadevan is great, AR Rahman is legendary - probably the best composer. Kailash Kher - love his songs - what a voice. Silk Route is another wonderful band. Strings is one of my favorite bands - hey Paki I know but i make an exception - these guys are good. I dont like Junoon they piss me off. I dont like Jal either but that guy Atif has a great voice.

DY - their pop a lot better than ours? Spoken like a true paki. I TOTALLY dont agree. We are the ones with the music industry, and believe me, we have the talent it is just not as popularized. But Strings are good. There is also this paki band called EntityParadigm which has two lovely numbers. And this old Paki band called Vital Signs - i just like the singer and maybe a few songs. IMO we have PLENTY of better singers in India. Sonu Nigam and Jagjit Singh spring to mind.

More favs: Kishore Kumar, Colonial Cousins (if you guys can get a hold sung together by Hariharan and Strings you will love it). Other than that I listen to plenty of filmi soundtracks - there is some seriously good music out there - Yuva, Monsoon Wedding, Lagaan, Bombay, Dil Se, DDLJ, Rockford...

Man, sayonee is awesome. There was a period when i had that song on a loop for hours at a stretch!! ( then my mom had had enough of the same song playing over and over and she issued me an ultimatum. On considering the consideration that an ultimatum had been issued, i decided to change the song. So i put in the 'Bombay' pic theme song on a loop :D

ive heard all of these - i stand by what i said. we've got equally good if not far better music. some of junoon's songs are catchy, but overall they turn me off. the problem with all these paki bands is once they start with a certain tune, the same tune keeps recurring through the album. lacks originality.

I like Junoon and Euphoria. They used their influences to create a distinctive sound for their group. Junoon's Khudi and Kyon Pareshan Hain Tu are among my favorites. However, I cannot understand what possesed them to add the guitar riff from Extreme's Rest In Peace at the beginning of that uninspiring effort they call Sajna

While I find there are some very good vocalists in the pop scene from both India and Pakistan, songwriting is still one-dimensional and the sound is never captivating. Atif Aslam, a singer that my sister introduced me to, is one example.

I listen to all kinds of music,

I dont understand Hindustani or Carnatic but love it, though like LN I feel there is a element of disorganisation in our music (though the more I understand it, apparently most of carnatic music is geometric progression and that cannot be disorganised and there are composers/song writers who have earned the moniker "Kannaku" literally meaning mathematics"

I'am also stuck in a time warp in the 70's to 80's period with a smattering of early 90's.

Of late I have been getting enamoured by a lot of African music especially music from Sudan, Tanzania etc

Bollywood is like a soothing background score though sadly I feel for the present moment I have outgrown my love for Kishore/Rafi songs (have any of you ever experienced that  :()

But in India I think the best music comes from the far east and I dont mean Bhupen Hazarika but go further up to Shilliong and Imphal and Kohima and Gangtok there is some great music floating around there.

My sister (a singer in her own right) tells me that accomplished Carnatic vocalists get "lost" in different raagas and this is considered a higher art. Also has some connection to meditation. Maybe this is why it seems disorganized.

I know what she means..though I dont understand raga's etc, but one can for hours on end listen to people like MSanthanam, DKP, MS, there are many more most of whom I dont know.

My fav form of all Indian classical is Dhrupad as sung by the Dagar brothers..

Guys, quit it. I really wanted to get to sleep early tonight. But now that is not happening. I need to listen to all these numbers!

Being in Seattle, ofcourse how can one forget the maestro!  His gravesite is in Renton, WA, about 25 mins from seattle (15 if traffic free :D). It is quite impressive.
