Srinath's term (i just coined it) for oldmen: Experienced Yengsters

Yo all yengster dad's like GCPH, CP, LN et al:

Why dont u let ur kids sleep in their own bed or bedroom? (i know its not like "u dont want" to let them...but...more like they dont allow u to and kick u out of the beds!  ;D)
Well, i guess if u've let them get used to sleeping with you, then it is a hard habit to change - but if right from the beginning u had the baby sleeping in the crib and tried as much as possible let them be in their own crib, and then later on their own beds (when they grow up) - maybe they'll be used to sleeping on their own?

(Yep, babies will cry a lot, and u prob cuddle 'em a lot, but once in a while u do put them in their cribs, then they get used to it -  i suppose, but Yengster Dads can offer real-world wisdom here!?)

This is the story of how fineleg started sleeping on his own:

Pater Fineleg and Mater Fineleg wanted to have the bed to themselves. Fineleg would often kick, shift and ruin a good night's sleep. He was beset by nightmares where India would be the first team to concede 1500 runs in a Test inning.
They bought a crib and placed it as far away from their bed as possible. The first night, they explained to little Fineleg, "Listen beta. Today you will sleep in the crib on your own ok?"

Fineleg, a cautious person from infancy was immediately frought with worries. Due to the much advanced technologies available we have been able to record and translate Fineleg's baby-talk:

"You want me to sleep in a crib? Is it SAFE? Are you SURE the mattress springs are good? Is the frame of the crib made of MAHOGANY? I need to be SAFE."
Pater: "Yes, beta. Dont worry about all that, we have selected the best possible crib for you, without parochialism and regionalism. This crib will last a long time and will serve you well into your 20s"
Fineleg: "But I will be scared! Are you SURE you want your child so far away from you? Also, who assembled the crib? Were they experienced? They need to have assembled THOUSANDS of cribs before"
Mater: "Of course, bachcha. We have made sure only the finest crib assemblers available set up your crib. We have also bought many soft toys and the most cushiony pillow possible for you to rest your precious head on"
Fineleg examines the crib thoroughly: "The GAP between railings is TOO large. What if my head goes through and gets STUCK?"
Pater (getting a little annoyed): "Dont worry beta, the crib will make for a nice hat in that case"
Mater (ever the patient one): "Nothing like that will happen puttar. I will wake up intermittently and make sure you are comfortable in your crib"
Fineleg: "But what if a BURGLAR breaks into the house? I want to be in between my parents and SAFE! I dont like these fly-by-nite operators."
Pater (now pissed): "Listen, son. First of all, our house is burglar proof. We have an alarm system. Second of all, your crib is far from any window or door. Third of all, you are sleeping in the damn crib and I dont care if you soil your pampers thrice a night because of it"

It took fineleg a few months to get over his insecurities. But his parents learnt to love his pessimism and incessant posting of updates such as "I will be asleep for a few hours. Goodnight, folks", and the Fineleg family lived happily ever after

I understand its humor! ;D (well for all the "perceived" effort u put into UCV - i shud understand what is humor and what is serious!). Not offended.

PS: "perceived" is the keyword...what with the Dean bangin' Aussie chicks, instead of preparing course material - some effort into UCV! ;D

Why is California King not a choice?
-P

Do bigade hue bachn ka baap hone ke naate all I can suggest to people is ALWAYS ALWAYS buy a California King. Nothing else should be a choice!!!!!
Ha ha ha ... spoken like a true dad.

Yaar. Experience speaks. We bought a queen when we furnished our bedroom. Until last  year when we only had one child it was easy for him to squeeze in when he woke up at night .... now with two kids .... guess who gets kicked out of the room :)

Gam uthane ke kiye main to jiye jaoonga!

I'm sure all Yengster Dads would have tried putting their kids in cribs at very early age. Kids would have cried. It is at this point that Dads and Moms have to harden themselves. Put the kid at ease but make sure (s)he sleeps in the crib. This is something I could not do (I can speak for myself only).

Kya karun? Maa ki mamta ki tarah Baap ki baapta ki wajah se mann nahin manaa....  ;D  :'(

That is why they invented Woodward's Gripe Water ( aka baby booze :D )

Yup. But I have seen a few cases personally (in India) where parents started giving Gripe Water to kid regularly, at a very early age because they could not stand her wailing. Initially, their faces were like -  ;D    Slowly, their kid started getting addicted to Gripe Water. After many months, the kid could not sleep without Gripe Water. Then parents' expression was -  :'( :'(

They were able to get their kid off Gripe Water with great difficulty. They had to bear manyfolds more wailing when they stopped giving Gripe Water. That MAY be one reason why products like Gripe Water are not sold off-the-shelf in USA.

Another example - One of my father's very very close friend started giving 1 tea-spoon of brandy to his grandson every night so that the child could sleep well. He continued giving brandy because kid was sleeping very well but the kid started becoming addicted and became lethargic during daytime. However, because of lethargy, the kid gained weight. The grandpa and everyone else was very happy as they thought the kid is getting healthy. Slowly they noticed kid's lethargy. They stopped the brandy. Kid became active but also became very skinny. Because now he was burning more energy than he was intaking via food (small diet because of early lethargy). Around age of 5, the kid became normal.

Moral of my stories (real) is that any medicine that makes the kid drowsy MUST be used with extreeme caution and onlu when the kid absolutely needs it.

Very valid posts, I have two boys 5 and 1 and they sleep in their own bed in another bedroom but usually we keep our door open so if they do wake up they can walk up to our room and it happens without fail each night. The only thing being that my sons dont kick me as much as they kick their mom  ;D. but then I have the privilege of waking up in little puddles of pee occassionally (we dont use diapers because my little one's skin is ultra sensitive and he bleeds with them on).

We used to give our kids some multi vit syrup for some time and we realised that they used to sleep well after that, but within a couple of days my wife had the foresight to read the composition and we realised that the alchohol content was high enough to put little children to sleep we stopped it immediatly because it could have got addictive.

No such problems for me...My twin daughters sleep in their own room...no medicines to put them to sleep.
We had the foresight to get a L shaped bunker bed...so they can see each other, talk to each other and get even flow of the breeze from the fan...so no disturbed nights for all and sundry...Touch wood ....*touching my head*

Move the vertical line a little more to the left.
The kid using the top berth "puts thoongu" E-W and the kid in the lower berth N-S.

I am not an Engineer ...but from some angle it is a L ... ???
