Dinesh Karthik creates history

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik created history on Wednesday by smashing a quadruple hundred in the SPIC-TNCA first-division league. The 21-year-old's unbeaten 403 is the highest ever score in the competitive first-division club league played here, surpassing S. Ramesh's 307 not out.

Karthik struck an astounding 55 fours and seven sixes in his 357-ball knock for Jolly Rovers against Alwarpet. "I've always wanted to make a big one," said Karthik, who was India's reserve wicketkeeper during the Test leg of the West Indies tour.

"At the start of the season, I thought I should make a double. Here I reached 100, and then looked for 200," said the right-hander who opened in the second innings of the three-day match. "After that, I didn't think too much, just played it ball by ball. It's a great feeling to make 400."

Karthik, who had ended Tuesday unbeaten on 251, propelled his side to 660 for one declared - a record for the highest total in the first division. Rovers, however, couldn't force victory.

Good for DK, though what exactly is "first division league"?

When Sachin and Kambli got a record stand - was that below "first division league"...i suppose so, since it was school level right?

First division league cricket is definitely at a much high level than school cricket.

While DK will be happy with this perf... - I think he'd have still preferred to go on Ind-A tour to Aus-A rather than having to sit in WI without doing anything and for that one reason of backup keeper in WI, it did not allow him to make the Ind-A tour. ( i think since DK is #2 choice, he'd have gone ahead of Parthiv if he was available).

This is a jolly match he played for Jolly Rovers...i think Steve Bucknor officiated. ;D

Good record neverthless, I am really surprised none of our other DOMESTIC HERO's like Raman Lamba, WV Raman, Arun Lal (was he one?) haven't scored 400s in League matches?

WVR has a 300 - i think, not sure...does RL have a 300?

Fineleg: I think DK will disagaree with you. So will Ramesh Powar. I think there is no substitute for a "real foreign tour" experience with the seniors. It is part of the maturing process. PP has already been through that..and DK (who is clearly #2 WK) needed that. There is a lot that goes on off-the-field that helps a player build confidence and character.
Also, in my book (and dont get me wrong, MSD is a great talent), MSD is not an automatic for tests for the long term, yet.

Good points, LN. (agree that MSD is not automatic for tests as well).
However couple of things to keep in mind:
1. DK has been in actual Test 11 for a few series (unlike RP who has not played Tests) - so for DK maybe actual 11 in Ind-A tour bit more worth it?...debatable perhaps...

2. Given that DK #2 *currently* (those things change), he might have wanted Ind-A tour to solidify #2 or even place a contention for MSD test spot...i dont think this 400 does anything to help that. If PP bats well to SAVE the current 4-day vs Aus-A, that will get noticed more.
