There I was complaining earlier about how these types of threads should be banned because of the pain it gives remembering the food in our Desh, but when I come back here to see what else had been bought up all I get is talk about body secretions.
Wow this DG is great, if provides the cure as soon as you request.

Now I will probably live off salad leaves for some time, and all chickens can safely cross the roads!

For andhra biryani - Nandini Palace in Indiranagar, Bangalore (CMH road, I think)
Cool. Will go there.
Now maybe Rams can help me out here..but for Hyderabadi Biriyani..would it not be Paradise in Secunderabad?
yep, paradise in secunderabad is just too good. Actually, I think its taste came down a lil bit in recent times.
LN/Flute:Sorry I caught this post just now.  Paradise is the best.  Not just for Biryani.  But Tandoori chicken is out of the world.  Mutton Biryani ofcourse is the Hyderabadi Biryani and is just too good.  I went there about 6 times when I was in Hyd. recently in June'06.  In a 3 week span that is a lot.

Just to give you an idea of how good this place is.  Rahul *hi about 6 months back was in Hyd.  He stayed there obviously in a Sheraton or Taj Group.  But couple of times he sneeked in as a surprise.  They never advertised it.  He later said and it was in the papers that once he heard of the place he made up his mind to eat what is the best place in the city, ignoring the security warnings.  He said it in the paper it was the best Tandoori he ever had.

Rumour has it they serve close to 100,000 people in a day.  Takeouts plus 6 floors of dining and 13 hrs of non-stop service.  If you have an idea of the area in Sec'bad they brought the entire commercial places around the original restaurant and just expanding.  They have more than 1000 that work the kitchens and the dining area.

Also just for the information they also serve very good vegetarian dishes cooked in the Mughlai style.   I heard they have their own chicken farms and grow their own vegetables used for the restaurant.

The chai if you have any idea there is one for the senses.

Trust me guys you will not be disappointed.  If you are in Hyderabad go visit Paradise.

I know Toney will disagree on this..but I have had the same experience as yours.

The thing I am amazed about is the consistency they maintain ..it is always the same - just like a McDonald's Big Mac is same everywhere/everytime.

Also, the Biriyani is always fresh..given their turnover. Never had Tandoori chicken there - funnily enough.

Whenever, I go to Hyderabad -which has been averaging twice a year for last 5 years - I always visit Paradise (besides Chutney's at Nagarjun Circle - the Chiranjeevi Dosa, MLA Pesarattu and the assorted Chutneys are absolutely fantastic, Mainland China - out of the world hot and sour soup, and Southern Spice - best nati kodi kora).

You are right they are growing ..I just hope they maintain the quality.

lnow,
Yeah, I disagree :). I am not sayin that the biriyani is tasteless but I found nothing special about it. Maybe, it was a bad day.

I remember Mainland China. There was also a small restaurant, Nanking. ANybody been there?  We visited Riviera once (near Sangeet) but didnt return.

LN/Flute/Toney: Try their Tandoori Chicken, Chicken Tikka, Mutton Biryani in that order now.  I will say you will not be disappointed.  You may even go back again during the same trip.

Sorry this coming from a supposed Vegetarian.  Yes I am a Vegetarian at home.

LN:It is by choice.  My wife is a strict vegetarian.  My 2 boys who are 4 and 1 1/2  are to this point vegetarian as well.  Basically I want to keep it simple.  When I eat at home I have fun eating vegetarian food.  But whenever we go out and we do that quite a bit I eat what I want.  Always been that way since I was in India, as my parents are Vegetarians as well.

How did I ever get into Non-Veg food????Oh well, ever heard of "Friends have a great influence" and I do not regret it.

Makes sense.
My mom would not allow non-veg at home but we could eat outside.
Now at home, we eat everything..but do not make non-veg when veggie folks (relatives) visit due to respect for their preferences

Same thing with this friend i know. The family (all of them)  love non-veg, but never cook it at home. they have  a cook, so it is not even as if they have to cook the non-veg items. But whenever they eat out they do eat a lot of non-veg.

Read below.  One more quite famous person pitching for Hyd.  Biryani

 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He may have been born in Indore and brought up in Bangalore, but Hyderabad happens to be the favourite hunting ground for Indian cricket captain Rahul Dravid. One look at his batting record here tells you the story. The stylish batsman has always come out shining in the Pearl City, evident from his whopping average of 76.25 from the five games he has played here.

‘The Wall’ also boasts of a world record partnership, a massive 331 runs for the second wicket with Sachin Tendulkar in a one-dayer versus New Zealand, in Hyderabad. He had contributed a whirlwind 153 then. Reason enough for him to dash to the city at the slightest opportunity, like he did on Tuesday. “I love being here, Hyderabad has always been a pleasant experience for me,” he told this correspondent during his short stay on a promotional visit.

Right from my Ranji Trophy days, I have always done well here, I’m fond of this city,” the 33-year-old adds. He’s also impressed by the city’s allround development. “Every time I come here I see that it has changed, the people, the flyovers, the IT industry, et al. Hyderabad has grown big time, reason why people from all over the country are headed towards this place,” he says revealing his knowledge about economics.

Then, he switches to food. “Hyderabadi biryani is one of my favourites. It’s a must every time I come here, even if I am on a short visit like this one,” he says. “Can’t leave the place without having some,” he adds, stressing on ‘some’, keeping in view the Indian team’s conditioning camp beginning in Bangalore on Wednesday in preparation for the upcoming tri-series tournament in Sri Lanka.

The captain, fresh from a historic win over the West Indies, is geared up for the next assignment. “I am excited, and looking forward to the new challenge,” he says about the contest involving India, Sri Lanka and South Africa.

talking of Mamos. The best you find would be in Delhi behind the ISBT in a place called the monastry. Its the tibetan market ...you find foreign clothes and shoes etc ... they have a restaurant on the firstfloor. Not very clean but the food (and Mamos) are great!

kabhi majnu ka tila gaye ho bhai? monastery-se behtar hai, food and the illegal liquor.

I think this thread would be more useful if one could list the top x best food they have eaten - either at a restaurant or at home. The names of the restaurants do not mean much unless you specify which food item. We can even include Vegetarians in this so that they do not feel isolated.

Sudzz,

Thanks for including a Mangalorean Restaurant in your list. I have not been there since I do not go to Mangalorean Restaurants (except Vegetarian like Kamaths or Woodlands) when I am in other cities. But I would suggest also Ankur (near Flora Fountain) which has more typical Bunt Type of food like "Kori Roti" which is unique (and delicious) and has along with very rich chicken gravy a unique kind of paper-thin rice based bread which is made only in Mangalore, which is dehydrated and can be stored for months and years. I have not been there myself, but had recommended to my daughter when she was there. She loved it, along with fried pomfret as apetizer.

Here is the address etc. I do intend to go there once:

ANKUR

Meadows House, M. Shetty Road, (Tamarind Lane), Behind Kandeel, Fort.
Tel : 2654194 / 2630393
Timings : 12:00 - 15:30 & 18:30 - 24:00, Sun 18:30 - 24:00

Ankur is one of the best fish restaurants in Mumbai serving genuine Mangalorian coastal food. In the spotlessly clean and airy Swiss chalet style surroundings try the neer tella with meengassi (fish in spicy coconut gravy with steamed dosa). meen kaidina (pomfret), prawns koliwada on sticks and kori roti. Kerala lobster, fish kochi, fish thekdi. prawns karavali curry, prawns welli.yetti maipe (non-spicy), crab hot pepper, tiger prawns, prawns kalamiri (pepper sauce). Ankur also offers Moghlai and Chinese cuisine. Credit cards accepted. Avg meal costs Rs. 150/- to Rs. 350/- per head.

Speaking of Dum Pukht.. the idiots at the Sheraton here in Hyderabad closed that restaurant. It was my favorite place for Kakori Kababs and Dum Biriyani (also called Pukki Biryani.. because the rice is cooked with the meat in a pot sealed with atta). Absolutely delicious and the kakori kabab just melts in the mouth. Also, there was a local chap called Riaz Mia ..who used to sing ghazals during the meal. Had an amazing voice. A great place for overall dining experience.

Two weekends ago, tried the Kakori Kabab at Jaypee palace in Agra .. they had a chef from Lucknow ..but it didnt match the taste and texture of the one at Dum Phukt.

BTW, here is the Murg Mussallam discussion thread (from Thanksgiving/Christmas 2006)..

...Dum Biriyani (also called Pukki Biryani.. because the rice is cooked with the meat in a pot sealed with atta)
...
Thats the way my dad makes biriyani and honestly, the best i have ever had.

FP and Lnow,
I have heard a lot about Karim's, especially the stuffed goat for which you need to give prior notice. As I understand, there are two Karim's. I am guessing that the older one is still better? Thoughts about lamb and rice and raisins and that heavenly smell is making me lose it at work.

...Ankur (near Flora Fountain) which has more typical Bunt Type of food like "Kori Roti" which is unique (and delicious) and has along with very rich chicken gravy a unique kind of paper-thin rice based bread which is made only in Mangalore, which is dehydrated and can be stored for months and years.
...
Is this rice based bread the same as pathtiri? Paththiri is a Muslim speciality, eaten with good non-veg curry in Kerala. When I was in the ME, the lady next door (Muslim from northern Kerala) used to make all sorts of Iftar dishes for us. While each one of them was great, we looked forward to the paththiri and chicken/lamb curry most.

I have not heard of this Toney. But I am sure it is good. But I do not think it has any Kerala Muslim origins. As you know, all the Muslims in Managlore area come from Malabar and they have their own excellent cuisine (Mapillai). But Kori Roti is not one of them. It is the exclusive property of Bunts - middle caste hindus, lately of Aisharya Rai and Shilpa Shetty fame...(oops) - and they are the only ones who make and sell them. The key difference is the roti can be preserved for years since it is dehydrated. They look like solid, dehydrated paper dosa. You may find a photo of them on the web.

The Karim's at Jumma Masjid is older [from the times of Bahadur Shah], but it's the one at Nizamuddin which serves the stuffed goat, for which you need to give them a week's notice. The goat is marinated for 24 hrs, after which it is stuffed with a whole chicken, eggs, dry fruits, rice etc. You need an army to finish it [in 1999, we managed with 14].

Do remember to burp loudly after the heartiest meal you'll have had in a long time! ;D

Shahi Raan at Karim's, Chandni Chowk, Delhi
Halim at Gali Kababiyan, Delhi or Khaleq's, Kolkata
Best Sikandari Raan (I have had).. Bukhara at Maurya Sheraton in Delhi. Must give 24 hr notice.
Best Haleem.. any of the joints in the Charminar area in Hyderabad when they break the Roja during Ramzan.

24 hr notice needed for karims too...
i've never had the moolah to try bukhara or dum pukht while in delhi... so ill take ur word...
btw... best murgh mussallam... moti mahal, daryaganj, delhi

Moti Mahal. Wow! That used to be a regular hang out place for my Grand Father in HIS days. My father used to go there and we went there numerous times growing up. A lot of my Grand Mothers family lived in Dariyaganj.

Great place that Moti Mahal. Great memories. I almost missed this thread
