What is your perfect summer's afternoon drink?
« on: July 16, 2006, 11:34:38 PM »
I'll start off by listing a couple of mine

1) Spiced butter milk

2) lemonade (with or without berries)

3) Campari Citrus (my creation)

In a tall glass, mix -

    1 part campari
    Juice of 1 large Lime
2 parts Orange Juice (Or 3 if you want it sweeter)
    Top off with club soda.

    Very refreshing and yummy.

Now tell us your fav summer drinks

pietersan,
that is commonly kniown as pimp juice. it tastes equally killer with the addition of some OJ to the mix.
my all time favorite summer drink has to be Scotch, preferably cuttysark with gingerale with a slice of lemon. a close second it thumsup with a scoop of vanilla icecream. a thumsup float if you will.

Can u elaborate on this combo - sounds very interesting...
Thumbs-up + Vanilla ice-cream...do u mix TU and VI or is it to be "separately" consumed at the "same" time...
(sorta like eat together separately!  ;D )

well the easiest way to do it is to take a couple of scoops of VI and put it into a blender with say 100 ml of thumsup. then add the resulting goo to the remaining thumsup. add a stiff double shot of  goslings bermuda rum to said mix and you have a drink that will not, repeat will not give you a hangover. i swear it wont and i bartended/drank this for 4 years through college.  if you guys would like me to post some more insanely good wicked summer drinks let me kniow.
sgusa-lay of the wine. wine prices have shiot through the roof of late and i holding you to account.

Hasnt (good) wine always demanded its price ? Or is there a specific vintage/vineyard your highness prefers that has raised prices ? I could stay off that if you ask me to  ;D

PS: If you are complaining about Trader Joe's wines going from $3 a bottle to $4.50, i am going to come after you with a baseball bat!

so stay off the damn Chateau Lafite Rothschild Pauillac 1996 and tell any arse you know, who you thin should not consume such wine to do the same.  ;D

Good. For a min there i thought i needed to beat the living day light out of you for considering trader joe's wine. It looks liek you are at the other end of the spectrum, though :)

The costliest bottle i have ever bought was around $110. There is no stinking way i can pony up $600 for a bottle. So sleep safe in the knowledge that i wont contribute to its price raise.

Of course the usual butter milk, lassi and all time favourite sugar cane juice from stalls in Mumbai (Nariman Point) preferably.

Drain off the water and then peel, stone and pulp the mango with a spoon.
Place the pulp in a deep bowl.
Add water, sugar, salt, chili and cumin.
Whisk thoroughly.
Stir in the mint and whisk again.
Transfer it to a jug.
Serve chilled with crushed ice.

First choice, always : The king of mangoes - Alphonso(Hapoos)

Then I like some regional varieties ..based on where I am ..
1. South .. Benganpalli (called Safeda in North) - to cut an eat, Cheruku-rasam - for mango shake, Panchdar-Kalsi - for eating with hand and sucking
2. North .. Langda and Dussehri

We used to get mangoes from Kenya in the U.A.E ...I think the reason for that may have been because of a temporary disruption to te supply. Mexican mangoes I have had are okay but not as good as the ones in India.

Losingnow, if you ever go to Mexico, try to find out where you can get good Carne Asada. The stuff I had in Baja California was exquisite. The tortilla was like romaali roti. The guacamole - I don't care for guacamole but the stuff I had there had something to it, I admit. The meat was the kicker - oh so tender and perfectly cooked.

I am craving it.

If you love meat..specially steak ..nothing to beat Argentinian and then Brazilian beef. I dont know where you live, but if you have a Rodizio-style Brazilian (Churascarria) restaurant (where they serve you non-stop, unlimited grilled meat for one price) in your town - just give it a try. You will love it. Tender, marinated and perfectly girlled.

Of course, I like Carne Asada..I have been to Mexico City and Guadalajara.. great food...yep, the tortillas were like Roomali roti. If you like Mexican, must try some of the "mole" dishes too.

OK..now this thread is becoming unbearable for me. Aaam and now Steak. Time to order  takeout from .. http://www.sabas-cuisine.com/menus.html .. best in phoenix.

Brazilian barbecue is awesome. I don't think I have had Argentinian though. I'll see if I can find a restaurant.
I was just checking out that link - Mediterranean cusine is the final word when it comes to good food. Good Call.

Fineleg,
I think I have had something similar except with the aam roasted -- very good!

Also there is a very good shortcut -- just use GOOD mango jam and adjust the sugar
as needed. I would leave out the mint.

we gujjus eat khichdi with aam paana, i know sounds weird but try it just the yellow dal ki khichdi and aam paana ;)

these are some of the stuff i eat with aam in them and i still eat most
1. kaccha mango and onion salad with lal mirchi and salt
2. aam ras - it's a gujju thing, go to any gujju wedding and you sure to get ras and rotli
3. dry aam papad - yum yum
4. aam paana - not my personal favorite but a big hit  in gujarat during the summes
5. amroto - a type of dal eaten with rice, basically once you eat up the aam, you let the seed in water and then u use that water and that seed to make dal, not sure of the exact recipe, but the dal turns out thick and yes very little toor dal used so any of you guys trying to save on the toor dal money try it out (www.tarladalal.com should help)
6. HOW CAN I FORGET the mangoes dried in adrak before being mixed with oil and masala when making pickles, never had a better tasting mango
7. a NRI thing - mango lassi, but some beepers just sell mango pulp and advertise it as mango lassi
8. plain oil green or yellow mango - those summer days when you would aim at mangoes on the trees with stones (Trying to be as indian as possible) and how you would run to the house wth the mango tree after a rainy day hoping a few mangoes fell off the tree.
all you cheenaites sure remember the porcupine scale shaped mangoes sold at marina beach. mangoes at the shore unbeatable, it's a "tastes better at a certain place" kind of thing
9. a tamil thing - channa sundal (again a marina beach thing) and peanut sundal. mangoes better the major ingredient in both
10. pickles - mango pickles unbeatable!
11. chundo - gujju thing, shredded mangoes cooked over a long period of time in natural solar heat, mirchi and sugar.

plz feel free to add

Yep.. Actually in Hindi it is called Kairi-ka-pani also.
Ecuador... Never been there. Never thought you would get good beef there.
Been to Peru - you get really good seafood there...specially Ceviche (which is raw seafood "cooked" in citrus juice).

we gujjus eat khichdi with aam paana, i know sounds weird but try it just the yellow dal ki khichdi and aam paana ;)

these are some of the stuff i eat with aam in them and i still eat most
1. kaccha mango and onion salad with lal mirchi and salt
2. aam ras - it's a gujju thing, go to any gujju wedding and you sure to get ras and rotli
3. dry aam papad - yum yum
4. aam paana - not my personal favorite but a big hit  in gujarat during the summes
5. amroto - a type of dal eaten with rice, basically once you eat up the aam, you let the seed in water and then u use that water and that seed to make dal, not sure of the exact recipe, but the dal turns out thick and yes very little toor dal used so any of you guys trying to save on the toor dal money try it out (www.tarladalal.com should help)

12. Kairi-ki-Launji :  This is made in Marwari households. It is Kairi ki subji but with a lot of gud (jaggery). Typically, it tastes 100 times better if you eat it a day after cooking..the sweet/sour mix goes into the outer-shell of the seed ..and you can suck on it for hours and appears like there is always some sweet/sour juice left. It is incredible. Again, my Grandma's version was perfect - even my Mom couldnt replicate her perfection.

any like the thai dessert of mango w sticky rice? it sounded so weird when i was exposed to it for the first time and much to my surprise, i love it!

the picture here only has the white rice, my fave restaurant also serves some brown sticky rice.

another mango dessert i love is the chinese chilled mango custard soup with bits of grapefruit and sago in it. grapefruit bits give a nice sour bite to the sweet soup.

Have tried it...did not like it. The combination just did not work for me. There is not much blending going on..even when you take a bite of each in your mouth. It just does not flow!
You know what could be a good variation on this.. cook the sticky rice in thick milk (almost like kheer but cooked much much longer) but make it very sticky with no liquid (the marwari term for this dish is "khirand") and then serve the cut mango with it. I think the "milk base" will give the dish the "moist" flow it is missing.
..Oh no, it is "Careless Whisper" on Radio..dang, it has been ages since I heard Wham!

would it be similar to eating mango with chapati? i figured both the accompaniments, rice or chapati would be equally bland. us ghatis take great pride in eating amras, or pulped mango. now this cant be any mango but only pairi from ratnagiri. a hapus is usually thrown in for flavor. a similar mongolian dessert has sticky rice with avocado and kiwi fruit. where the mongols found kiwi fruit or avocados god alone knows.

well, the rice should be soaked in sweet coconut milk so the rice shd be sufficiently moist. i had it at a very authentic thai place and being a creature of habit, i go to only that place to eat thai food and so there may be not-so-yummy variations of this floating around the world and am unaware of!

careless whisper? ugh@sappy songs :-)
