LYRICS
« on: July 14, 2006, 08:20:42 AM »
I will be posting some lyrics that I like here. Feel free to contribute. Please post any lyrics (whatever language) that you like (goes for everybody)...my aim is to influence people to check out songs that they may or may not have heard. At the moment, I just post lyrics to "song of my day" - whatever has been playing in my head most of the day. If you would like to sample the any of the songs that I post lyrics for let me know -I'll see what I can do.

It would help if you could post a translation if it is not Hindi or English.  :)

Here's one to start us off.

PIXIES - Where is my mind (<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/qF72JWHE640&rel=0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/qF72JWHE640&rel=0</a>)

Oooh - Stop!
With your feet on the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Your head will collapse
But there is nothing in it
And you'll ask yourself

Where is my mind?
Where is my mind?
Where is my mind?

Way out in the water
See it swimming.

I was swimming in the Carribean
Animals where hiding behind the rock
Except the little fish
But they told me he swears
Trying to talk to me coy koi

Where is my mind (x 3)

Way out in the water
See it swimming

With your feet on the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Your head will collapse
But there is nothing it
And you'll ask yourself

Where is my mind (x 3)

Way out in the water
See it swimming

With your feet on the air and your head on the ground (oooh oooh)
Try this trick and spin it, yeah (oooh oooh)

LED ZEPPELIN - Kashmir (<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/_ijApVjsOf0&rel=0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/_ijApVjsOf0&rel=0</a>)

Oh let the sun beat down upon my face, stars to fill my dream
I am a traveler of both time and space, to be where I have been
To sit with elders of the gentle race, this world has seldom seen
They talk of days for which they sit and wait and all will be revealed

Talk and song from tongues of lilting grace, whose sounds caress my ear
But not a word I heard could I relate, the story was quite clear
Whoa ohh.
Whoa ohh

Ooooh, I been flying...low, yeah...mama, there aint no denyin
Oh...Ooooh, Ive been flying, mama mama aint no denyin, no denyin

All I see turns to brown, as the sun burns the ground
And my eyes fill with sand, as I scan this wasted land
Trying to find, trying to find where I've been.

Oh, pilot of the storm who leaves no trace, like thoughts inside a dream
Heed the path that led me to that place, yellow desert stream
My shangri-la beneath the summer moon, I will return again
Sure as the dust that floats high in June, when movin through kashmir.

Oh, father of the four winds, fill my sails, across the sea of years
With no provision but an open face, along the straits of fear
Whoa ohh.
Whoaah...oh

When I'm on, when Im on my way, yeah
When I see, when I see the way, you stay-yeah

Ooh, yeah-yeah, ooh, yeah-yeah, when I'm down...
Ooh, yeah-yeah, ooh, yeah-yeah, well I'm down, so down
Ooh, my baby, oooh, my baby, let me take you there

Come on, Oh.
Let me take you there. let me take you there

PORNO FOR PYROS - Pets (<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/bY2xA4xrry8&rel=0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/bY2xA4xrry8&rel=0</a>)

Children are innocent
Teenagers fu**ed up in the head
Adults are even more fu**ed up
And elderlies are like children
Will there be another race
To come along and take over for us?
Maybe martians could do
Better than we've done

We'll make great pets! (x8)

My friend says we're like the dinosaurs
Only we are doing ourselves in
Much faster than they
Ever did

We'll make great pets! (x8)
We'll make great pets! (x4)
We will make great pets!
We'll make great pets! (x3)

Are hindi lyrics allowed? Anyways, I am adding one ...

Maybe not the exact words used by Aryabhatta to explain his invention to the world ... I found this one highly enjoyable, nevertheless

======================================================================
ANDE KA FANDA - from Jodi No. 1 - first paragraph narrated before breaking out into song!

PEARL JAM - Alive (<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/WYOJjIRnmYI&rel=0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/WYOJjIRnmYI&rel=0</a>)

"Son," she said, "have I got a little story for you...
What you thought was your daddy was nothin' but a...
While you were sittin' home alone at age thirteen
your real daddy was dyin'. Sorry you didn't see him, but I'm glad we talked..."

Oh I, oh, I'm still alive
Hey, I, I, oh, I'm still alive
Hey I, oh, I'm still alive
Hey...oh...

Oh, she walks slowly, across a young man's room.
She said "I'm ready...for you..."
I can't remember anything to this very day,
'cept the look, the look...
Oh, you know where, now I can't see, I just stare...

I, I'm still alive
Hey I, but, I'm still alive
Hey I, boy, I'm still alive
Hey I, I, I, I'm still alive, yeah
Ooh yeah...yeah yeah yeah...oh...oh...

"Is something wrong?" she said
Well of course there is
"You're still alive," she said
Oh, and do I deserve to be?
Is that the question?
And if so...if so...who answers...who answers...?

I, oh, I'm still alive
Hey I, oh, I'm still alive
Hey I, but, I'm still alive
Yeah I, ooh, I'm still alive
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

That is a verse from a song by a trio of Brazilian artists that produced a record, almost impromptu at a party, under the name Tribalistas. This translation comes pretty close to the meaning.

I belong to no one
I belong to the world
and the world is you as well

Here are the entire lyrics in Portuguese followed by translation.

TRIBALISTAS - Ja Sei Namorar (<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/C0QWn8pOgtE&rel=0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/C0QWn8pOgtE&rel=0</a>)

Já sei namorar
Já sei beijar de língua
Agora, só me resta sonhar
Já sei onde ir
Já sei onde ficar
Agora, só me falta sair

Não tenho paciência pra televisão
Eu não sou audiência para a solidão

Eu sou de ninguém
Eu sou de todo mundo
E todo mundo me quer bem
Eu sou de ninguém
Eu sou de todo mundo
E todo mundo é meu também

Já sei namorar
Já sei chutar a bola
Agora, só me falta ganhar
Não tenho juiz
Se você quer a vida em jogo
Eu quero é ser feliz

Não tenho paciência pra televisão
Eu não sou audiência para a solidão

Eu sou de ninguém
Eu sou de todo mundo
E todo mundo me quer bem
Eu sou de ninguém
Eu sou de todo mundo
E todo mundo é meu também

Tô te querendo como ninguém
Tô te querendo como Deus quiser
Tô te querendo como eu te quero
Tô te querendo como se quer

(Translated)

Now I know to love (court)
Now I know to kiss
Now I'm only left to dream
I now know how to go
I now know how to stay firm
Now I only have to part

I Don't have patience for television
I'm not audience for solitude

I belong to no one
I belong to the world
and the world loves me too

I belong to no one
I belong to the world
and the world is you as well

I now know how to love
I now know how to play ball
Now I only have to win

I dont have justice
If you want life to be a game
I only want to be happy

I dont have patience for television
I'm not audience for solitude

I belong to no one
I belong to the world
and the world loves me too

I belong to no one
I belong to the world
and the world is you as well

I love you like no one else
I love you like God would
I love you the way I want you
I love you like you love to be loved

I love you like no one else
I love you like God would
I love you the way I want you
I love you like you love to be loved

BTW -
if any of these above songs have 'free' online audio URL to listen - pl. update the threads with those.
Always will stay in mind if we 'listen' to audio along with text.
APPLAUSE for the effort in gathering lyrics, Jiet.
Thanks.

BILL WITHERS - Ain't No Sunshine (<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/NzLxVvKrZdA&rel=0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/NzLxVvKrZdA&rel=0</a>)

Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
It's not warm when she's away
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And she's always gone too long
Anytime she goes away

Wonder this time where she's gone
Wonder if she's gonna stay
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And this house just ain't no home
Anytime she goes away

And I know,
I know, I know  (*repeats several times going low*)

Hey I oughta leave the young thing alone -
But Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
Only darkness everyday
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And this house just ain't no home
Anytime she goes away

Anytimes she goes away (x 3)

Audioslave - Shadow on the Sun (OST Collateral)

Once upon a time
I was on a mind
to lay your burden down

And leave you where you stood
You believed I could
Youd seen it done before

I could read your thoughts
And tell you what you saw
And never say a word

But now that is gone
Over with and done
And never to return

I can tell you why
People die alone
I can tell you why
The shadow on the sun

Staring at the loss
Looking for the cause
And never really sure

Nothing but a hole
To live without a soul
And nothing to be learned

I can tell you why
People go insane
I can show you how
You could do the same

I can tell you why
The end will never come
I can tell you on
The shadow on the sun

Shapes of every size
Move behind my eyes
Doors inside my head
Bolted from within
Every drop of flame
Lights a candle in
Memory of the one
Who lived inside my skin

I can tell you why
People go insane
I can show you how
You could do the same
I can tell you why
The end will never come
I can tell you on
The shadow on the sun

Shadow on the sun
Shadow on the sun
Shadow on the sun
Shadow on the sun
Shadow on the sun
Shadow on the sun
Shadow on the sun
Sun
Sun

I just checked a few sites. Rolling Stones listed it as one of the top 500 singles and credited it to Withers. Green probably covered it at some point.

Remember that I always tried
Remember I loved only you
Remember me and smile
For it's better to forget

Movie: Yahaan
Singers: Shaan, Shreya Ghoshal
Song: Naam Adaa Likhna

poocthein jo koi meri nishaani rang heena likhna
gore badan pe ungli se mera naam tu aa likhna
kabhi kabhi aas paas chand rehta hain
kabhi kabhi aas paas shaam rehti hain
aao na aao na
jhelum mein behne de
waadi ke mausam bhi ek din toh badlenge
kabhi kabhi aas paas chand rehta hain
kabhi kabhi aas paas shaam rehti hain

aau toh subaha jaau toh mera naam sabah likhna
barf pade toh barf pe mera naam tu aa likhna
zara zara aag waag pass rehti hain
zara zara aangdi ki aanch rehti hain
kabhi kabhi aas paas chand rehta hain
kabhi kabhi aas paas shaam rehti hain
shaamein bujhane aati hain raatein
raatein bujhane tum aa gaye ho

jab tum haste ho din ho jaata hain
tum gale lago toh din so jaata hain
doli uthane aayega din toh
pass bitha lena
kal jo miley toh
mathe pe mere suraj uga dena
zara zara aas paas dhup rahegi
zara zara aas paas rang rahenge

get a hold of this song - it is lovely

Michael Learns To Rock - Someday

In my search for freedom
And peace of mind
I’ve left the memories behind
Wanna start a new life
But it seems to be rather absurd
When I know the truth
Is that I always think of you

Someday someway
Together we will be baby
I will take and you will take your time
We’ll wait for our fate
Cos’ nobody owns us baby
We can shake we can shake the rock
Try to throw the picture
Out of my mind
Try to leave the memories behind
Here by the ocean
Wave’s carry voices from you
Do you know the truth
I am thinking of you too

Someday someway
Together we will be baby...
The love we had together
Just fades away in time
And now you’ve got your own world
And I guess I’ve got mine
But the passion that you planted
In the middle of my heart
Is a passion that will never stop

Enya - Return To Innocence

That's not the beginning of the end
That's the return to yourself
The
return to innocence.

[Love - Devotion
Feeling - Emotion]

Love
- Devotion
Feeling - Emotion

Don't be afraid to be weak
Don't be
too proud to be strong
Just look into your heart my friend
That will be
the return to yourself
The return to innocence.

If you want, then
start to laugh
If you must, then start to cry
Be yourself don't
hide
Just believe in destiny.

Don't care what people say
Just
follow your own way
Don't give up and use the chance
To return to
innocence.

That's not the beginning of the end
That's the return to
yourself
The return to innocence.

[Don't care what people
say
Follow just your own way
Follow just your own way
Don't give up,
don't give up
To return, to return to innocence.]

[If you want then
laugh
If you must then cry
Be yourself don't hide
Just believe in
destiny.]

THE WHITE STRIPES - Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground <a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/04yZfM_QJm0&rel=0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/04yZfM_QJm0&rel=0</a>

Dead leaves and the dirty ground
when I know you're not around
shiny tops and soda pops
when I hear your lips make a sound

Thirty notes in the mailbox
will tell you that I'm coming home
and I think I'm gonna stick around
for a while so you're not alone

If you can hear a piano fall
you can hear me coming down the hall
if I could just hear your pretty voice
I don't think I need to see at all

Soft hair and a velvet tongue
I want to give you what you give to me
and every breath that is in your lungs
is a tiny little gift to me

I didn't feel so bad till the sun went down
then I come home
no one to wrap my arms around

Well any man with a microphone
can tell you what he loves the most
and you know why you love at all
if you're thinking of the holy ghost

Youssou N'Dour feat Neneh Cherry - Seven Seconds

Boul ma sene, boul ma guiss madi re nga fokni mane
Khamouma li neka thi sama souf ak thi guinaw
Beugouma kouma khol oaldine yaw li neka si yaw
mo ne si man, li ne si mane moye dilene diapale

Roughneck and rudeness,
We should be using, on the ones who practice wicked charms
For the sword and the stone
Bad to the bone
Battle is not over
Even when it's won
And when a child is born into this world
It has no concept
Of the tone the skin is living in

CHORUS
It's not a second
7 seconds away
Just as long as I stay
I'll be waiting
It's not a second
7 seconds away
Just as long as I stay
I'll be waiting (x3)

Changer

CHORUS

And when a child is born into this world
It has no concept
Of the tone of the skin he's living in
And there's a million voices
And there's a million voices
To tell you what she should be thinking
So you better sober up for just a second

CHORUS

Eanie Meany Lyrics  (featured in FIFA WC 2006 Adidas Jose +10 commercial)
Jim Noir

If you don't give my football back, I'm gonna get my dad on you
I only kicked it over your fence and broke a silly gnome or two

Eanie meany, run away
Eanie meany run away

If you don't give my football back, I'm gonna get my dad on you
I only kicked it over your fence and broke a silly gnome or two

Eanie meany, run away
Eanie meany run away

Eanie meany, run away
Eanie meany, run away

Eanie meany, run away
Eanie meany, run away

Eanie meany, run away
Eanie, run away
Steal my football, run away
I'll get it back some day

Eanie meany, run away
Eanie, run away
Steal my football, run away
I'll get it back some day

Eanie meany, run away
Eanie, run away
Steal my football, run away

THE SHINS - Saint Simon (<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/6qMtf7eXPMs&rel=0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/6qMtf7eXPMs&rel=0</a>)

After all these implements and text designed by intellects
So vexed to find evidently there's just so much that hides
And though the saints of us divine in ancient feeding lines
Their sentiment is just as hard to pluck from the vine

I'm trying hard not to pretend
Allow myself no mock defense
Step into the night

Since I dont have the time nor mind to figure out
The nursery rhymes that helped us out and make a sense of our lives
The cruel uneventful state of apathy releases me
I value them but I won't cry if the time was wiped out

I'm trying hard not to give in
Battened down to fair the wind
Read my head, at least pretend
Allow myself no mock defense
Step into the night

Mercy's eyes are blue
When she places them in front of you
Nothing holds a roman candle to
The solemn warmth you feel inside

There's no measuring of it
As nothing else is love

I'll try hard not to give in
Battened down to fair the wind
Read my head, at least pretend
Allow myself no mock defense
Step into the night

Mercy's eyes are blue
When she places them in front of you
Nothing really holds a candle to
The solemn warmth you feel inside of you

Sheila Jordan's version  (dunno how to get the mp3 online etc.)

Falling in love with love
Is falling for make believe
Falling in love with love
Is playing the fool

Caring too much
Is such a juvenile fancy
Learning to trust
Is just for children in school

I fell in love with love
One night when the moon was full
I was unwise with eyes unable to see

I fell in love with love
With love everlasting
But love fell out with me!

Falling in love with love
Is falling for make believe
Falling in love with love
Is playing the fool

Caring too much
Is such a juvenile fancy
Learning to trust
Is just for children in school

I fell in love with love
One night when the moon was full
I was unwise with eyes unable to see

I fell in love with love
With love everlasting
But love fell out with me!

Falling in love with love
Falling in love with love
Falling in love with love

Cricinfo XI

It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing

Martin Williamson and Andrew Miller

July 18, 2006

Sport and music are not necessarily happy bedfellows, and even in that restricted field, cricket barely fights its corner. We look at the best - or worst, depending on your viewpoint - cricket-linked songs. As ever, feel free to send us your alternative nominations

Tourist pleaser: 10CC's Dreadlock Holiday © Cricinfo

Dreadlock Holiday 10CC
The song that contains the oft used line "I don't like cricket, I love it", the lyrical equivalent of a leg-side full toss to any TV producer looking for cricket-related background music. The song was successful in its own right, reaching No. 1 in the UK in 1978, and its reggae rhythms mean that if England are in the Caribbean then it's sure to be resurrected by Sky Sports. The fact that the song had been embraced by the authorities to promote the game rather overlooks the fact that the overall theme is about being mugged while on holiday in Jamaica. Unlikely, therefore, to feature as Jamaica's World Cup song, especially as it came from the album Bloody Tourists.

C'mon Aussie C'mon Mojo Singers
This was the tune that launched World Series Cricket in 1977 and was a commercial and public masterpiece, hummed by children across Australia, not least because of Channel 9's virtual saturation airing of the advertisement. Blatant marketing of this kind had never been tried before, and the official Australian Cricket Board product looked old and stale by comparison. Over the next three seasons the lyrics were tweaked to reflect the different tourists, including some dodgy Caribbean accents in 1978-79. The song was given a new life when reality TV show winner Shannon Noll re-recorded it in 2004, with Dennis Lillee and Len Pascoe, the original stars, replaced by more modern players. Pigeon's pounding down like a machine / Dizzy's scarin' batsmen - lookin' mean.

Sherbet show just why the early 1970s will never be cool © Cricinfo

Howzat Sherbet
The only out-and-out cricket title to have been an international hit (it was a No. 1 in Israel and Thailand) came from Australian glam rock outfit Sherbet whose lyrics told how an Aussie feller discovered his loved one's infidelity. How, how, howzat? / You messed about, I caught you out, howzat? / Now that I've found where you're at / It's good-bye. Sadly, that's the extent of the cricket reference. In an attempt to break the American market the band changed their awful name to the equally dreadful Highway ... their demise followed soon after. But by then they had had 15 consecutive top 10 hits in Australia and become the first band to sell Aus$1 million of records.

Victory Test Match Lord Beginner
In the immediate post-war period calypso spread from its Caribbean base round the world, and in Europe its popularity was largely as a result of the arrival of immigrants from the West Indies into the UK. Among the first to land in 1948 were calypso legends Lord Beginner and Lord Kitchener, and both were present at Lord's in 1950 when West Indies thrashed England at Lord's. A small band of supporters sang and danced their way round the outfield and all the way down to Piccadilly, and a few days later this tune, most famous for its opening line - Cricket, lovely cricket - and chorus - With those two pals of mine / Ramadin and Valentine was released. The song celebrated more than a win - it was, so wrote CLR James, the moment that the shackles of colonialism were broken.

The Sinking Ship Gypsy
This is a tune likely to make even the unflappable David Gower, England's captain on the 1985-86 Caribbean tour, grimace. For England, the series was a catalogue of disasters on the pitch, only overshadowed by the myriad of rumour, speculation and allegations stirred up by a large contingent from the tabloid press off it. The Sinking Ship was a tune popular in Trinidad at the time - it was actually the story of the island's decline following the death of Eric Williams, its Prime Minister until 1981 - but the lyrics seemed apt for Gower, and it became an unofficial backdrop to the series, played with glee whenever England were in trouble ... as they almost always were. Captain, the ship is sinking / Captain, the seas are rough / Shall we abandon ship? / Or shall we stay on it / And perish slow? / We don't know / Captain you tell me what to do.

Booker T & The MGs: American band produced the sound of summer © Cricinfo

Soul Limbo Booker T & The MGs
For almost 30 years you knew summer had really arrived when the familiar opening tink-tink-tink of Booker T's classic started. Peter West, Jim Laker and six hours uninterrupted by advertisements or the shipping forecast were sure to follow. Although the song had a slight Caribbean flavour, it was actually recorded by the Memphis-based instrumental band Booker T & The MGs, who had provided backing tracks to many massive Stax hits in the 1960s. The BBC never really cashed in on the success of the tune, and for many the biggest wrench when Channel 4 won the rights to cricket coverage in 1999 was the disappearance of Soul Limbo. But Radio 4's Test Match Special belatedly resurrected it as its own intro music, to the approval of cake-makers across the Home Counties.

Our Don Bradman Jack O'Hagan
The gramophone may have been in its infancy, but cashing in on public figures had already been identified as a potential cash cow. Inspired by the success of Bradman in England in 1930, Jack O'Hagan, who was a big name at the time, let rip with this little ditty which included possibly the worst rhyming couplet in the history of the world. Our Don Bradman / Now I ask you is he any good? / Our Don Bradman / As a batsman he is certainly plum pud. Christmas turkey might be more apt.

Ashes 71 England squad
Inspired by the success of the 1970 England World Cup squad's No. 1 Back Home, Brian Johnston and Reuters' John Henderson, with too much time on their hands on the New Zealand leg of England's 1970-71 Australasian tour, penned lyrics to accompany an old music hall ditty called Winkle Song and it was recorded by England's Ashes-winning squad. But by the time the players assembled in a London studio the Ashes success was old hat and, despite considerable publicity, the public's imagination was not captured. In the end the royalties totalled £53.86 and rather than split the bounty 20 or so ways, a sweepstake was held and fittingly Ray Illingworth, England's captain, scooped the prize. Ian Chappell's tourists in 1972 responded with Here come the Aussies, based on a chant sung by Chelsea supporters. It sunk even quicker than England's effort.

Dave Stewart: perfectly timed release © Cricinfo

All Over the World Dave Stewart
Pop quiz - which Stewart endured the most miserable World Cup campaign in the summer of 1999? Was it Alec Stewart, the England captain who became distracted by a pre-tournament pay dispute and was sacked shortly after his side had bombed out in the first round. Or was it his namesake Dave, the dodgy-coiffured male half of the 1980s pop combo, Eurythmics? A self-confessed cricket freak, Stewart wrote, produced and sang the official World Cup anthem, "All Over the World". "I was writing about how warm people can be and that sport can bring people together," explained Stewart. Unfortunately, the single hit the shops the very day that England were bundled out of their own party. Apparently the lyrics included such gems as: The sun is up, the sky is red, no grey clouds inside your head, life is a carnival. But seeing as no-one in the world seems to own a copy, you'll just have to take our word for it.

F***ing Hell, It's Fred Titmus Half Man Half Biscuit
Once described as the "most authentic British band since The Clash", Half Man, Half Biscuit was a sharp-witted four-piece rock band from Birkenhead, in the Wirral. A by-product of Thatcher's Britain, the band announced itself in 1986 with the album "Back in the DHSS", which was recorded for just 30 pounds and yet sold more than 200,000 copies. According to Nigel Blackwell, the lead singer, guitarist and surreally talented writer, "one of my fantasies was to have a load of folk shouting something ridiculous like 'F**king Hell, it's Fred Titmus!' back at the stage as a counterblast to all those rock acts whose audience would hold their lighters aloft during some Godforsaken dross concerning 'a girl no longer with us due to flagrant disregard of the speed limit by persons unknown'. Much more fun thought I to have 'em shouting the name of a Middlesex spin bowler. Certainly more believable anyway, I think." Other songs by HMHB included "Hedley Verity-esque," and "Christian Rock Concert", which included a reference to Wendy Wimbush, the legendary former Test Match Special scorer ... playing on a spacehopper ...

Mambo No. 5 Lou Bega
Born in Germany to a U*an father and Italian mother, and the singer-songwriter of an Afro-Cuban dancefloor anthem, Lou Bega became the unlikely sound of English cricket for six heady years from 1999 to 2005, during Channel 4's groundbreaking Test match coverage. His breakthrough single, "Mambo No. 5", became an instant worldwide hit, charting in the top 5 across Europe and in the USA, with its catchy lyrics detailing the antics of a serial womaniser. A little bit of Monica in my life/A little bit of Erica by my side/A little bit of Rita's all I need/A little bit of Tina's what I see ... It perhaps never became synonymous with cricket in quite the same way as Soul Limbo did with the BBC, but it was catchy and uplifting nonetheless, and was the prelude to some of the finest commentary and production work that cricket has ever been privy to.

Now that's what I call music ...

Martin Williamson

July 25, 2006

Last week we published a Cricinfo XI of cricket songs and were inundated with suggestions of ones we had missed. So here is the second installment with apologies for any even more obscure ones we have omitted. Click here for last week's selections

Roy Harper: © mistlethrush.co.uk

When An Old Cricketer Leaves The Crease Roger Harper
Championed by legendary DJ John Peel ("in the halcyon years before he bravely but terminally took on punk without a helmet" according to reader Graeme Beswick), this is about as blatantly cricket as you can get and provided Harper, who recorded it at the famous Abbey Road studios with the Grimethorpe Colliery Band in 1974, with his best-selling single. Peel asked that the song be played in his memory when he died. Harper had less success with his eulogy to the dire Watford Gap services three years later, the company running the outlet objecting to his lyrics Watford Gap, Watford Gap / A plate of grease and a load of crap.

Bradman Paul Kelly
Widely considered to be an icon of Australian music, Kelly's 1989 tribute to another icon was the most-requested nominee for the second XI of this musical mishmash. He was more than just a batsman / He was something like a tide / He was more than just one man / He could take on any side. It is said that Bradman contacted Kelly to congratulate him after hearing the song. And in terms of length, at eight minutes it's fittingly more a Test match than a one-dayer.

Marvellous Billy Birmingham and MCG Hammer
Birmingham is loved and hated in equal measure throughout the cricket-playing world for his series of 12th Man recordings, in which nothing is sacred and nobody beyond parody. While most of the time he is happy to mock Tony Greig, Bill Lawry and Richie Benaud, this one musical contribution - a semi heavy composition - maintains the standards of the spoken word. Benaud, it is widely reported, is decidedly unamused at Birmingham's output, mainly because of the liberal use of profanities.

Rory Bremner: books and videos followed his record career © Universal Pictures

N-N-Nineteen Not Out The Commentators
This record by Rory Bremner, Britain's leading impressionist for the last two decades and a cricket nut, was a parody of Paul Hardcastle's massive global hit, 19, where that was the average age of a US combatant in the Vietnam war. Bremner modified the lyrics, threw in impersonations of the BBC's commentators, and it became the batting average of the England side who had been subjected to a 0-5 whitewash at the hands of West Indies the year before. The record, which was produced by Hardcastle under a pseudonym against the wishes of his record company, reached No. 13 in the UK charts in 1985.

I Made A Hundred In The Backyard At Mum's Coodabeen Champions
Composed by Greg Champion, a member of The Coodabeen Champions - a long-running ABC national radio show - for 22 years. The simple lyrics will cause anyone who has ever thwacked a ball around in the garden or street smile - I hooked 'em off me eyebrows and I tried to keep me head / And the ton came up with a straight drive through the window of the shed . A few years later Champion updated the lyrics to reflect the match-fixing scandals prevalent at the time. The kid who set it up and organised the whole event / Was boasting of connections on the subcontinent / When the match began he stood at fine leg all alone / Taking calls from India on his mobile phone. Ah, Hansie Cronje and Co. cause innocence to be shredded.

Jazba Junoon Junoon
The song which accompanied Pakistan into the 1996 World Cup, and one that's not at all bad and was accompanied by a video interspersed with clips of the side in action. Until its release, Junoon were a struggling soft-rock band, but this song - one picked by the Pakistan board from more than 60 entries - helped elevate them to new heights. Coca-Cola paid the group around 23,000 for the rights to the tune, and Junoon have gone on to greater things. In 2004, their album Dewaar sold one million copies in a month. Like all good rock bands, they have also had their brushes with the authorities. In 1996 they released a song called Ehtezaab(Accountability), which accused former prime minister Benazir Bhutto of removing ancient Pakistani artefacts to her mansion in the UK. Not quite sex and drugs, but a start. Click here for the video.

Keedie: marginally more photogenic than Kevin Pietersen © Cricinfo

Jerusalem Keedie
Clearly not a blatant attempt to cash in on the post-Ashes euphoria of 2005 - much - the ECB flew 23-year-old classical singer Keedie to Faisalabad (where England's tour of Pakistan was underway) to record this song in a makeshift studio in a hotel lobby. The William Blake hymn had already been hijacked by the ECB to act as a rousing tune to accompany England onto the field at the start of the day during home matches, and a record was a natural progression of that. Lancastrian David Lloyd, commentating for Sky Sports, was delighted with the choice of Keedie as it kept him lined up with one-liners referring to Gary Keedy (the Lancashire spinner) almost throughout the tour. In fairness, all proceeds from the venture were put towards helping the victims of the earthquake which struck Pakistan in October 2005.

Gavaskar Lord Relator
A calypso in the style of Lord Beginner's Cricket, Lovely Cricket,, this was written in tribute to a touring player following Sunil Gavaskar's heroic exploits in the Caribbean in 1970-71. It was voted at No. 68 in a poll to find the best calypso of the 20th century. It was Gavaskar / The real master / Just like a wall /We couldn't out Gavaskar at all / Not at all.

The Ashes Song Bob Willis And The Wickets
Michael Paterson wrote in with a terrifying memory of watching the long-running children's TV show Blue Peter in 1978 when, so he says, they showed a video by Willis ahead of that winter's Ashes tour. Willis, who added Dylan as a middle name in homage to musical god Bob Dylan, took 20 wickets on the tour "more than the number of records he sold". All investigations have drawn blanks, and we have to hope that Paterson's recollections are a legacy of teenage experimentation with alcohol rather than fact.

David Rudder: Caribbean anthem © Artists Direct

Rally Around The West Indies David Rudder
Trinidad born and Canada based, Rudder is an artist and calypso singer - he provided back-up vocals to Lord Kitchener in his early days - who penned the song that has gone on to become the semi-official anthem for West Indies cricket and the one usually played as the West Indies cricketers take the field at the start of a day's play. Indeed, when a decision was made to come up with an anthem for the Caribbean, many advocated Rudder's song be adapted. Some of the old generals have retired and gone/ And the runs don't come by as they did before / But when the Toussaints go the Dessalines come / We've lost the battle but yet we will win the war.

Eton and Winchester Frederick Septimus Kelly
Researching this article revealed that cricket songs composed in the decades either side of 1900 were ten a penny - for more information see David Allen's 1981 book A Song for Cricket - and one of the more unusual came from Kelly, an Eton-educated Australian who wrote sonatas and orchestral pieces immediately before the Great War. This work celebrates the annual match between the two schools. A remarkable character, he won a rowing Blue at Oxford and a gold medal for Britain in 1908. He was killed on the Somme in 1916.

PINK FLOYD - Comfortably Numb (<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/g550mjDquIw&rel=0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/g550mjDquIw&rel=0</a>)

Hello,
Is there anybody in there
Just nod if you can hear me
Is there anyone at home
Come on now
I hear you're feeling down
I can ease your pain
And get you on your feet again
Relax
I'll need some information first
Just the basic facts
Can you show me where it hurts

There is no pain, you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain, you would not understand
This is not how I am
I have become comfortably numb

O.K.
Just a little pin prick
There'll be no more aaaaaaaah!
But you may feel a little sick
Can you stand up?
I do belive it's working, good
That'll keep you going through the show
Come on it's time to go.

There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown
The dream is gone
And I have become
Comfortably numb.

Artist: Sarah McLachlan Lyrics
Song: I Will Remember You Lyrics
ANOTHER SONG: 'Building a Mystery' - if anyone has those lyrics post it later.

I will remember you
Will you remember me?
Don’t let your life pass you by
Weep not for the memories

Remember the good times that we had?
I let them slip away from us when things got bad
How clearly I first saw you smilin’ in the sun
Wanna feel your warmth upon me, I wanna be the one

I will remember you
Will you remember me?
Don’t let your life pass you by
Weep not for the memories

I’m so tired but I can’t sleep
Standin’ on the edge of something much too deep
It’s funny how we feel so much but we cannot say a word
We are screaming inside, but we can’t be heard

But I will remember you
Will you remember me?
Don’t let your life pass you by
Weep not for the memories

I’m so afraid to love you, but more afraid to loose
Clinging to a past that doesn’t let me choose
Once there was a darkness, deep and endless night
You gave me everything you had, oh you gave me light

And I will remember you
Will you remember me?
Don’t let your life pass you by
Weep not for the memories

And I will remember you
Will you remember me?
Don’t let your life pass you by
Weep not for the memories
Weep not for the memories

Very nice FL...Sarah Machlachlan. Here is a classic Hindi film song. If there any errors with the lyrics, please let me know.

Movie: Tezaab
Song: So gaya yeh jahaan

So gaya yeh jahaan
so gaya aasman
So gaya yeh jahaan
so gaya aasman

so gayee
hai saree manzilein
o saree manzilein
so gaya hai rasta

So gaya yeh jahaan
so gaya aasman
So gaya yeh jahaan
so gaya aasman

so gayee
hai saree manzilein
o saree manzilein
so gaya hai rasta

raat aaee to voh jinke ghar the
voh ghar ko gaye so gaye
raat aaee to hum jaise awaara phir nikle
raahon mein aur kho gaye

raat aaee to voh jinke ghar the
voh ghar ko gaye so gaye
raat aaee to hum jaise awaara phir nikle
raahon mein aur kho gaye

Iss gali, Uss gali
Iss nagar, Uss nagar
Jayein bhi to kahan jaana chahiye agar

o so gayee
hai saree manzilein
o saree manzilein
so gaya hai rasta

So gaya yeh jahaan
so gaya aasman
So gaya yeh jahaan
so gaya aasman

kuch meri suno
kuch apni suno
ho paas to aise
chup na raho

hum paas bhi hai
aur door bhi hai
azaad bhi hai
majboor bhi hai

kyon pyaar ka mausam beeth gaya
kyon humse zamaana jeet gaya

har ghadi mera dil gham ke ghere mein hain
zindagi door tak ab andhere mein hai
andhere mein hai
andhere mein hai

o so gayee
hai saree manzilein
o saree manzilein
so gaya hai rasta

So gaya yeh jahaan
so gaya aasman
So gaya yeh jahaan
so gaya aasman

Mohammad Rafi - Badan Pe Sitare (Movie: Prince)

Badan Pe Sitaare Lapete Hue,
O Jaan\-E\-Tamannaa Kidhar Jaa Rahii Ho
Zaraa Paas Aao To Chain Aa Jaae,
Zaraa Paas Aao To Chain Aa Jaae

Hamii.N Jab Naa Ho.Nge, To Ai Dilarubaa,
Kise Dekhakar, Haay, Sharamaaogii
Naa Dekhogii Phir Tum Kabhii Aainaa,
Hamaare Binaa Roz Ghabaraaogii
Badan Pe Sitaare Lapete Hue ...

Hai Banane Sa.Nvarane Kaa Jab Hii Mazaa,
Koi Dekhane Vaalaa Aashiq To Ho
Nahii.N To Ye Jalave Hai.N Bujhate Diye,
Koi Mitane Vaalaa Ek Aashiq To Ho
Badan Pe Sitaare Lapete Hue ...

Muhabbat Ki Ye I.Ntahaa Ho Gai,

Zamaanaa Ye I.Nsaaf Karataa Rahe,
Buraa Kah Gayaa Yaa Bhalaa Kah Gayaa
Badan Pe Sitaare Lapete Hue ...
