Yes - I am a relatively new entrant, in the sense of...i have watched a long time ago, and used to follow it to some extent...at that time, i used to know the players and things like that ...then gave up with all time constraints (and cricket occupying most of time, and then some occupied by tennis)...but this time WC-2006 the fire was rekindled a bit and i started following again! (thanks to the FIFA related fervor worked up at CricketVoice!)

The ones who are consistently rated as the best are Lev Yashin of the Soviet Union and Gordon Banks of England. I have not seen either of them but from what I hear Yashin get the edge.

Of the ones I have seen the best is arguably Peter Schmeichel (Denmark). Incidentally he is one of those greats who shined for both club and country.

1. Peter Schmeichel (Denmark)
2. Peter Cech (Czech Republic)
3. Jose Chilavert (Paraguay)
4. Edwin Van Der Saar (Netherlands)
5. Oliver Kahn (Germany)

The call between Kahn and Van der Saar is close one.  :-\

Higuita was a show-pony who never missed an opportunity to play for the camera. Goalkeepers are supposed to be safe...Higuita would try to beat strikers and get the camera's attention.

So each time he pulls off something like <a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/yILDiU859FU&rel=0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/yILDiU859FU&rel=0</a>

he is equally capable of doing <a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/VhWMxgaqnkc&rel=0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/v/VhWMxgaqnkc&rel=0</a>

Question:
why did colombia keep higuito then?
was it becos he was immensely talented despite his monkey antics costing 'self' goals?
(not self self, but just reckless i mean)

I don't think he played for Colombia after that. He went to the premiership for some mid-level club I think.

Jiet, I am not so sure of your No 3. The rest are all awesome. Wasnt Shilton considered good too? I didnt find him that good, mainly because I remember a couple of mistakes at the end of his career.
What about Ricardo? Not as the best ever but for this world cup, it was Buffon and Ricardo for me. Buffon was the only reason Zidane didnt have the fairytale ending he wished for.

Peter Shilton and Walter Zenga were two goalkeepers who at one time had the longest clean sheets ... I remember Zenga being finally beaten by a sublime header by Cannigia (one of the few bright spots of Argentina's '90 campaign) and did Shilton also not finally let in a goal in the same tournament? Before going out on penalties.

Well, Brasil in 1970 world cup had the worst goalkeeper of the world at that time..(the name escapes me now although I saw most of the matches on TV). Pele was asked by journalists at that time "How are you going to  win the world cup with that weak goal keeper you have". Pele's response was typical Pele (and not like any of the cricket captains we have today) : "That does not matter. If the opponents score 3 goals against us, we will score 4.After all, that is what football is all about".

I still agree with the above comment : Italy would not have won if Buffon would not have stopped that header from Zidane...And Zidane would have become....?

Chilavert was one of the best keepers I saw from South America...never mind the free kicks - he was fine shot-stopper. I though Ricardo was brilliant for Portugal during the World Cup.

While I rate Buffon and Zenga highly, it is difficult to compare them to a Ricardo. While Schweinsteiger hit great shots to beat Ricardo in the third place game, the Portuguese defense did not shut him down like the Italians would have. Italian keepers always have the advantge of a fantastic defense it seems.

Saw precious little of Shilton - but he is probably considered the second best of all English keepers. Gordon Banks was the best.

I beleive the penalty kicker and free kicker is Chilavert --at least he was better than Higuita.

Also, the current Brazilian goal keeper is apparently good at penalties --the American commentators referred to that.
