At the auto show in Detroit this January, Volvo provided a sneak peek at the C30 concept: a 3-door hatchback with a turbocharged 5-cylinder engine.

The Swedish automaker unveils a small car intended for young professionals in urban areas.

Volvo Adding New, Smallest Car

At the NAIAS, Swedish automaker Volvo announced that it plans to get into the small car market.

Volvo officials shared a “sneak peek” of what the new Volvo C30 might look like in hatchback form.

The upcoming small car is intended for young, busy professionals in urban areas, said Frederik Arp, president and CEO of Volvo Car Corp. “We’re entering a segment that’s virgin territory for Volvo,” he said.

Due to be shown as a more finalized model at the Paris Motor Show in fall 2006, the three-door Volvo C30 design concept is a distinctively styled hatchback that appears to sit rather low to the ground.

With room for four people inside, the C30 is a bit wider and nearly 9 inches shorter than Volvo’s current smallest car in the U.S., the S40 sedan. The hatchback roofline slopes back to a rear glass that’s reminiscent of the classic Volvo P1800 ES. Tires are large, 19-inchers from Pirelli, and the back of the car sports dual tailpipes.

The two rear seats of the C30 sit side by side with a space between them, and there’s a premium Alpine audio system that includes surround sound and 10 Dynaudio speakers, said Steve Mattin, design director for Volvo.

Power comes from a 260-horsepower 2.4-liter inline turbocharged five-cylinder engine that can propel the car from 0 to 60 miles an hour in six seconds, he said.

No price information was announced, but it’s expected that the C30 will be a low-priced Volvo. The current lowest-priced Volvo in the U.S. is the 2006 S40, which has a starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $23,755.

Also on display at the Volvo exhibit is the 2007 C70 convertible, which goes on sale by the spring. The new model has a three-piece, retractable hardtop. Pricing hasn’t been announced.

“It’s one of the first in the segment with a three-part roof and room inside for four adults,” Arp said, adding the C70 gives consumers both a convertible and coupe “in one” package.

About Detriot Auto Show, they had coool cars. It seems Lexus top of the line LS 430 was coolest.......it has hard disk to store 10,000 songs, Navi, leg massage for rear passengers, lots of 'pimp my ride' stuff from MTV.

New 2007 Camary rocks, i've never been a Toyota Fan, but new Camry looks nice.

I liked new Fit, looking at Gas prices this will be hot seller.

Jaguar, the world-renowned sedan and coupe maker, is coming out with another jewel that will woo your heart and mind.

The company is on the verge of launching its ultra comfortable, ergonomical and environment-friendly model Jaguar XK globally. Jaguars have always been ahead of the competition and this one would be no different. One would need to shell out upwards of $75,000 for this priceless machine.

The latest Jaguar!

The lexus Nav system is optional, right? And you can actually build that car much above the base price.

I like the new camry too but I never had an opportunity to drive/have a ride in it. I heard it isnt as impressive inside as it should have been. The new Accord wins, according to some die hard Camry fans.

BTW, any advice on mid size Suvs/vans? Friend of mine needs a car urgently and he wants something bigger. But he doesnt want to go the Yukon Denali level nor is he looking at the more expensive Cadillacs/Lexus. Maybe, a Lexus 330 or 350 is the max he will go. But he really needs some room.

Toyota 4runner, Nissan Armada, Acura MDX, Infiniti FX35, Lexus RX330/350, Mercedes ML350 .. all are good cars..and hopefully this covers the range. SUVs built on van chassis..do not have much room.
