a bowler is only a bowler but a batsman divine
« on: July 04, 2006, 11:55:15 PM »
We all know it is a batsman’s game.

Spare a little thought about the poor bowler though.
Pathan a month or so ago was the cynosure of every eye, a few bad performances in the ODIs and tests and he is now third in the pecking order of faster stuff in our team.
If a batsman gets chance after chance to prove and/or regain his form why doesn’t a bowler get the same.
As a bowler is he not entitled to regain his form in match situations a luxury we always seem to give the batsmen in the side.

I personally think a lot of injustice has been done to pathan in this respect. It is a different matter that the bowlers picked in his place have performed well but he certainly did not deserve to be cast aside for a few insipid performances and not only that his state of mind laid open for all to see and pass judgement on. (Whatever happened to dressing room stuff staying in the dressing room is anybodies guess)

Pathan brings a lot more to the Indian side than bowling alone. On song he not only provides breakthroughs early on but also along with Dhoni gives the team the luxury of playing an extra bowler when the situation arises. I feel he is a priceless commodity and deserves much more sympathetic handling.

inoc: all very good points, applause given.
I think many of us here agreed that he was not being handled properly and that there was no need to publicize what was going on. Their policy regarding out-of-form players is mystifying to say the least.

I hope that some 17 year old allrounder somewhere is not the trigger -- I mean IP did cross 20 many hundreds of says back  ;D

Agree to the point - that he was not handled properly.

What I am not sure is who's place he would have taken (if selection in team is the creteria of improving bowling form).

For a batsman to be out of form - you have four or five others to cover and at times, a bowler bats a better innings and fills the deficiency for out of form batsman.

Filling up a gap generated by an out of form Pace bowler is not easy- if you have 2 pace bowlers playing in team, with the awareness that one is not in his best performce mode, I am not sure Captain may want to take a decision to play Pathan unless he adds one more cushion.

SS and MP have also shown continuous signs of improvent, dropping any of them to give IKP a chance may not have been right.

The comparison between out of form batsman and out of form bowler may also not be ideal - as a bowler may have to perform ( ball) consistently  few overs, most of the balls expected to be good balls .
The batsman just blames the wicket taking ball as a bad ball and gets away with it.

Yes- In this scenario if you say: Replace the out of form batsman with  the out of form bowler  as none is  expected to make runs, then we are talking no profit no loss.

Not sure if the think tank will agree to that though.
