Puja for Ganguly's return....
« on: June 14, 2006, 01:21:49 PM »

Noticed one thing here..... SG's fans can't even write his name correctly. Notice the top banner. SG's name ends with a "B" when it should end with a "V". But hey.... What's in a name? SG with any other name would still be SG.

Bengalis don't have "V" . They substitute it with "B"
For them its Bandemataram not Vandemataram. Correct me if I am wrong.

That's interesting. Then why is Saurav's name ends with "V" when written in English? Since it is the name of a Bengali, given by a Bengali, should it not then be spelled "Saurab"??

I thought since the spelling ended with a "V", the intention was for the name to be pronounced with a "V" sound. Anyway, as someone said, what's in a name.....

Being a Bengali, I can say this is not really true i.e. there being no 'V'  :)
There are separate alphabets for 'B' and 'V' sounds, same as Hindi.
SG's name is pronounced Sourav and not Sourab.

It is just that there are B's in many places where non-bengalis expect a V.
The example above is true: Vandemataram - Bônde Matôrom. Or Vikas-Bikash. Vinay-Binoy.
Vijay-Bijoy. But Some words with V-sounds like Bhoomi, Bhoot are same as in Hindi.

one thing i do notice many bengalis saying "bhi" instead of "v". i took a chemical engineering course last semester and these two bengali (bangladeshi) kids would always say "assume bholume is bhi"

According to Le Chatelier:

The chicken crossed the road because there were too many moles of chicken
on the reactants side of the road equilibrium.

That is true. People from different region will have different accent, just like someone from south India in the same class will say the heat of reaction is del-hetch

What rubbish ?? What do fans have to do with pronounciation ?? When will people stop reading between the lines when there are none.

And because someone is able to spell the name correctly...what does it indicate ??

So if one were to write a Laxman as a Lakshman, what should we decipher out of that ??
