PARIS: Sania Mirza kept alive Indian hopes when she, partnering Slovak Janette Husarova, upset the formidable third seeded German/American pair of Anna-Lena Groenfeld and Meghann Shaughnessy. The unseeded pair’s 6-3 6-4 win was followed up by a Leander Paes win in the mixed doubles on an otherwise forgettable day for India. Paes and Maria Kirilenko beat French duo Severine Bremond and Marc Gicquel 7-5 7-6 (3) in the second round of the mixed doubles competition.

Mahesh Bhupathi and his Belgian partner Xavier Malisse’s campaign in the men’s doubles event came to an end as they crashed out of the quarterfinals with a 6-2 2-6 1-6 loss against the 15th seeded Romanian-German pair of Andrei Pavel and Alexander Waske on Monday.

Bhupathi’s hopes in the mixed doubles also evaporated when he and Martina Hingis withdrew before their match against Americans Bob Bryan and Martina Navratilova.

Meanwhile, the Indian challenge in the boys singles event came to a crashing end with seventh seed Sanam Singh shocked 2-6 5-7 by Slovak Martin Klizan while Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan was swept away 2-6 2-6 by top seeded Ducth Thiemo De Bakker in the second round on Monday. An out of sorts Sanam conceded the first set before he could have a hang of things out there in the middle.

Disappointing that Bhupathi and Hingis bowed out before playing. They make a good team. Might be because of Hingis' advance in the Singles competition

In the attitude of silence the soul finds the path in a clearer light, and what is elusive and deceptive resolves itself into crystal clearness. Our life is a long and arduous quest after Truth.
